Mrs. Meir Comes to Washington WASHINGTON, (JTA):White House Press Secretary .Ronald Ziegler told reporters . t h a t President Nixon "as-, sured" President Golda Meir , "of continuing. U.S. support" .for Israel during their 90minute talk at the White House last week. He added: "The talks were conducted in a ."friendly atmosphere which is the usual atmosphere when the Prime Minister and the President hold discussions."

The main purpose of Mrs. Meir's visit to Washington was to seek a $565 million U.S. aid package for the coming fiscal year, including $300 million worth of military credits foe the' purchase of the latest model fighter bombers and helicopter guhships. President Nixon reportedly deferred a decision on Israel's request for the $565 million, partly to avoid further inflam-

ing Arab response to the downing of a Libyan airliner over Sinai. There was speculation that Nixon might also be exploiting the aid request in order to elicit some diplomatic compromises from the Israeli Premier! Acording to the • report, the' President .had been expected to approve the aid during Mrs. Meir's visit but administration officials indicated that it will be left at the negotiating stage for the time being. State Department s o u r c e s

said, however, that there is no basis for such a report. If there is any difficulty in meeting the same or higher level of fiscal sources noted, it is likely to come from Congress in its consideration' of budget outlays. Meir Reaction Premier Meir told reporters that there were no arguments during her visits with American officials here on matters of mutual interest between the United States and Israel. Mrs. Meir held a briefing for Israeli correspondents following her

90-minute meeting with President Nixon at the White House. She told them, "I said in 1969 that we have a friend in the White House and I can repeat, it now." ; It was understood in Israeli circles here that' during her meetings at the White House, the State Department and the Pentagon, no demands were' made on Israel and Mrs;. Meir was not asked to. take any measures to open any new activities regarding M i d d l e East affairs.
