Soviet Jewry Theme for Des Moines Joint Service Des Moines — A community creative Thanksgiving service on behalf of Soviet Jewry will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, in tho Tifereth Israel Clubhouse. Skits, r e a d i n g s ,
poems and songs of Soviet Jewry will be presented. Dr. Ioachim Braum, a recent emigre from the Soviet Union, will also participate in the program. Sponsors are the Des Moines
rabbis, the four synagogues and their presidents, the Jewish Welfare Federation, the Des Moines Jewish Community Relations Commission, and the Committee of Concern for Soviet Jewry. In a letter mailed to the community about, the service, the sponsors explained its purpose: "We're seriously concerned about the well-being of our people. Our Soviet brethren (nearly three million of them) are being denied a basic freedom—the freedom to emigrate, without extortionate ransom, to Israel. They aren't allowed to live as Jews in the Soviet •Union and they aren't allowed to leave, freely. • "As the Jews in Soviet Russia are denied the observance of a Thanksgiving, we must celebrate for them as a community. Thirty years ago when Hitler was systematically solving :his Jewish; problem, the voice of world Jewry was, for the most part, silent. "Today, the Jews of the Soviet Union are being subjected to cultural genocide—the denial of their right to worship, to live ,a meaningful Jewish life. On this Thanksgiving Eve and the week before Chanukah, we recall those-who struggled for religious freedom. "Thirty years from now, 'Building contracts for the new Omaha Jewish Community Center were signed this week.
