Reform Rabbi Arrested in Anti-War Demonstration New York (JTA)—An American rabbi castigated ihe organized Jewish community- for "failure to join with others of the greater society" in condemning the Vietnam war and its recent expansion by the United States into Cambodia. Rabbi Balfour Brickner, director of interfaith activities of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations in New York, said the failure of ..organized Jewry to participate in the antiwar movement "jeopardizes the credentials of the- Jewish community with its own youth who -reject a parochial approach toiheissuesofwar and peace in tho world." Omaha Mayor, Eugene Leahy, one of 12 mayors Invited to visit Israel by tho Israel Ministry of Tourism, is pictured above with Mrs. Leahy and Amram Zur of the Israel Ministry of Tourism, at El Al's Orange Terminal at Kennedy Airport in New York, prior to their departure for Tel Aviv. -

Upon arriving in New York, tho Omaha mayor said, "You have to see Israel to believe it, I am going to urgo people to visit Israel and assure-them that they will feel safe In Israel, The historical spots are meaningful to people of every faith. The most significant thing to mo Is the specific pride and spirit and friendliness of the people. Israel is an example for other nations struggling with the problem of how to feed and employ their people. I never saw so much construction anywhere." Mayor Leahy said Jews and Arabs living together, especially in Jerusalem, was an indlcation that peopla can co-exist
in freedom. He was Impressed that the Mayor of Bethlehem could speak forthrightly in criticizing Israeli occupation without fear in exercising his freedom of speech. Mayor Leahy said he will urge Omaha Jewry to increase their support of United Jewish Appeal and Israeli causes. He viewed America and Israel as having a common interest in opposing Soviet military intervention in Egypt. Mayor and Mrs. Leahy were Joined by 11 other American mayors and their wives in the Israel visit. Rabbi Brickner was interviewed by tho Jewish Telegraphic Agency Mowing his arrest in Washington, D.C., along with 74 other clergymen and laymen who were holding an anti-war prayer service across the street from the White House,. Rabbi Brickner and the others, were charged with disorderly conduct and failure to move on. They were released on ball. " The Reform rabbi recited the benediction that opened the service. Ho did not attend as a representative of the UAHC but as a member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Clergymen and Laymen Concerned About Vietnam. Rabbi Brickner said the Vietnam war and its escalation was a "life or death" Issue for America and possibly t h e world. "It should not be considered an Issue with which everybody but Jews concern themselves." He said; "Jews have a tendency to view, the world situation In a myopic way, through the prism of the Israeli glass," Rabbi Brickner said he rejected an analogy between support for American policies
In, Vietnam and Cambodia and support for Israel. He said "the failure of representatives of the Jewish community to associate . themselves with those protesting the horror of escala-

tlon give truth to the lie that the two situations are analagous.". Rabbi Brickner warned that this could lead Americans to say that Jews are concerned only about Israel and will give credence to the anti-Semitic cannard that Jews hold ••dual loyalties. i
