Sen. Javits Claims Misunderstanding in U.S.-SsrasI Relations

A team headed by Prof. Nahman Avigad, digging in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City, has found what Is considered the earliest depiction of the Mcnorah tbat burned in the Second Temple. Prof. Avigad said It had been incised In a wall plastered 2,200 years ago. The Mcnorah was found only a few hundred yards from the Temple Mount, the site of the second Tompic, which, was destroyed In 70 A:D. The western supporting wall of the temple Is known as the Wailing Wall. "Tnenrtist probably saw the Temple Mcnorah every day," said Prof. AvIgad. "In any case, he was certainly an eyewitness." The discovery, under 15 feet of debris, Is regarded by experts In Judaic history as of major Importance. For the Menorah was one of the holiest items in the Temple, second In Importance only, to the Torab. It is the symbol of the Feast of Light, or Hanukkob.

said Mr. Riekes. "For the first time in many years, we are showing our strength as a unified Jewish community in recognizing the need and providing a valuable program of adult Jewish education. I urge everyone to give careful consideration to the brochure explaining the program, and to mail registration cards promptly," he said.

Tel Aviv (JTA)—Sen. Jacob. K. Javits assured Israeli leaders that President Richard M. Nixon will not change his friendly attitude toward Israel. The New York Republican, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, arrived here on a three day private visit and was received by Premier Golda Meir and Foreign M i n i s t e r Abba Eban. Sen. Javits conceded that there has been a deterioration in IsraelAmerican.rclations but claimed it was due principally to misunderstandings and not to a diminution of American support for Israel. "Sen. Javits said his trip to Israel was to "gather more facts" on what he viewed as a "drifting apart" of Israel and the United States; He said Secretary of State William P. Rogers' Dec. 9 statement of U.S. MiddleJEast policy was "not the last word on the subject by any means" and that the U.S. position had "by no m e a n s crystalized/' ', :

ment. What is. worse," the Congressman declared, "some of the U.S. proposals are totally unrealistic and call for concessions by the Israelis that they clearly will not a c c e p t and should not be asked to accept after the history of the past 20 years."
