The Generation in By Harold Goldberg Editor's Note: Harold Goldberg Is a graduate student at Brandeis University, and is a member of the generation in revolt about which he writes. - ^ . » * • The spotlight has been focused on that part Of the younger generation which has repudiated its Judaism and its ties with the Jewish community, has identified itself with the so-called "Third World" and has manifested every kind of hostility to its Jewish heritage. But there Is a very substantial element of the younger generation In revolt which does not deny its heritage and condemns its elders for having betrayed it. This is the estranged young generation in which lies the great hope of the Jewish commun-
ity. These are the young Jewish radicals who would protect and strengthen Judaism according •to their lights.. Here Js how one of them puts their position; "We reject most of the leaders of the Establishment Jewish community as YVASHes—White, Anglo-Saxon Hebrews." "Our goal Is not only to make the Jewish community more radical, but to make it more Jewish!" - ••;-•• ;;r. "My local synagogue is so luxurious that I feel uncomfortable praying in it." "American Judaism today is what I call 'King James Judaism." Marc Triebwasser, author of these statements,is typical of a new kind of Jewish r a d i c a l in America. He is not indifferent to Judaism as V &•' the Jewish radicals of the Thirties, nor is he —.-
tively opposed to Judaism as are many Jewish students on the radical left today. Triebwasser is committed to Judaism and to Israel, sees Judaism as radical in spirit, and is leftist-oriented in politics. He is one of a fastgrowing number of Jewish college students who, during the past year, have broken with the longstanding trend among Jewish youth to assimilate American mores. Although the hew, Jewishly-committed student radical is a recent phenomenon, his activism is already wide in scope, and continually seeking new forms of expression! He publishes Jewishlyoriented underground newspapers and intellectual jcuiGflfy1" "pmbats Arab student propaganda -s ideological means to define his '8V-a0QSl ?tthe Black revolution and urban :1L3S»«??1 flav>°5 - 'ntinued on Page 10)
