When Goiaa Visits Nixon By BORIS SMOLAR
Government wants to see peace in the Middle East..This; she thinks, is not the case with the Soviet Government. Moscow has Its own Interests in the Middle East. She is quite certain that her-visit to the U.S. will—in addition to the talks with President Nixon—also serve to dispel mis-conceptions. about Israel which pro-Arab elements in the U.S. are : attempting to spread. What will Premier Golda Meir seek in her talks with President Nixon? , Arms i Mrs. Meir avoids giving a concrete answer to this question and this is understandable, How, ever, from the intensified Arab war calls against Israel, it is obvious that the Israeli Premier will, in the, first place, ask the President of the U.S. to permit the sale of more American modern arms to Israel—in addition to the Phantom jets —as long as the Soviet Government continues the shipping of its modern arms to Egypt and other Arab countries. ^ Economic. Aid Mrs. Meir will obviousiy also ask President Nixon for American economic aid which has nothing to do with Israel's expenses on Security, The Conference of Human Needs in Israel—which Jewish leaders from all countries' of the free world held in Jerusalem last July—has established that Israel will need about $40 million, next year for developing its social services and for aiding.the integration of immigrants. This sum is to be raised by Jewish communities world over, the largest part of it by the American Jewish community. However, American Government economic aid is needed in Israel for industrial development in .order to make the country eventual-ly self-supporting. And it stands to reason that Mrs. Meir will bring this to President Nixon's attention. • , . . • • ; ': . . . " • ...'••.••• u.s. "Policy- •.~.r...;..u..w,':-.'-.i~ Finally, there is the question—which'"Mrs. Meir may and may not raise with President Vixon—on how the U.S. would act if Russia involves herself in a war against Israel. The Israel Government does hot expect, and" does not want, American soldiers to fight for the existence of Israel, but America has long-enduring interests in the national security of the Mid-dle-EastjStatcsT-including-Israel—It-hasHimppr-r tant strategic and economic interests as well as Interests of a political character.; Soviet involvement lit a war against Israel'will strongly affect t h l t t M M i l d U f * justified in seeking to clarify the issue with Presr Idcnt Nixon.
There is an atmosphere of simplicity in the office of Israel's Prime Minister Golda Meir in Jerusalem. A visitor feels very much at home there. We sit and discuss with her a number of problems now faced by Israel—the military problem, the human needs of Israel under the present tense situation, American aid to Israel, the link between American Jewry and Israel. It was only* natural vto ask her what she expects from her visit to the United States as guest df President Nixon. Mrs. Meir has great confidence in theXr.S., she says! She considers the U.S. a friend of Is;Des Moines — The annual 2825 Grand Ave., Des Moines, rael and values it.
