Sharp Criticism Lodged At U.S. Jewish Seminaries

Meir Urges Nixon to End Big 4 Interference JERUSALEM (JTA) - Premier Golda Meir was reported this week to have spent a personal message to President Nixon urging him not to repeat the mistake" made in 1957 when the .United States and the Soviet Union compelled Israel to withdraw from the Sinai PeninsulaTThe report appeared in the usually well-informed afternoon daily, Maariv. There was no confirmation or denial from the Premier's office. According to Maariv, Mrs. Meir reminded Mr. Nixon, that as a result of the action of the super-powers, the explosive situation that had prevailed prior to the Sinai campaign had been restored. This^soon became active ': belligerence' between Israel and the Arab states and this, in turn led to another war. Mrs. Meir.was described as asking.President Nixon to let the people of .the region settle their affairs without Big Power interference. This, she reportedly said, would be the best for all concerned. New York (JTA)—America's Jewish seminaries came under a barrage of criticism by the president of the National Foundation for Jewish Culture who described their mood as "placid, past-oriented and pedantic." Rabbi Daniel Jeremy Silver of Cleveland, the son of the late Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, the Zionist leader, said that a major overhaul of ,the seminaries is needed to transform them from mere "trade schools" for rabbis serving empty synagogues to training centers for Jewishly-formed social workers, youth leaders and scholars. He also endorsed the principle of female rabbis, calling the present "womanless ministry" an "imbecility." He asked, "Why alone among the professions is the rabbinate in violation of the Fair Employment Practices Act?" Ben-Gurion Assassination Plot Told Copenhagen (JTA) — A Danish court has ordered the det e n t i o n of two Arabs and a Swede for three weeks pending an investigation into a suspected plot to assassinate former Israeli Premier D a v i d BenGurion in Rio de Janeiro. The two Arabs have appealed the decision.
