Excerpts From Richard Nixon's Speech at B'nai B'rith Convention, September, 1968 The United States has a firm and unwavering commitment to the national existence of Israel, repeated by four Presidents, and after Inauguration Day next year, it will be repeated by another President, whichever candidate is elected ' President of the United States. . '• , The dangers of war increases in direct ratio to the confidence of certain Arab leaders that they could win the war. Here we face a hard fact. Since the Six-Day War, the Soviet Union has systematically rebuilt the armed forces of the , JJAR and of Syriar {

Israel must possess sufficient military power to deier an attack. As long as the threat of Arab attack remains direct and Imminent, sufficient power means the balance must be tipped la Israel's favor . . . For that reason—to provide Israel a valid self-defense—I support a policy that would give Israel a technological military margin to more than offset her hostile neighbors' numerical superiority . . . If maintaining that margin of superiority should require that the United States supply Israel with Phantom F-4 jets, we should supply those Jets. •

America supports Israel because we oppose aggression in every form. We support Israel because it is threatened by Soviet imperialism, and we support Israel because its example offers long-range hope in the Middle East.
on Israel An emergency resolution was adopted by the Executive Committee of the Omaha Jewish Federation at a special meeting Tuesday, January 14, 1969. In addition t o the executive board, representatives of various Jewish organizations were present at the meeting. Jack W. Marer led a discussion concerning the present situation in the Middle East. Great concern was voiced by the group to the recent statements made by President Charles de Gaulle of France with reference to Israel; tho current French embargo on the sale of military equipment to Israel; and the recent U.N. action of condemnation of Israel. As a result of the discussion, the following* resolution was unanimously adopted by the Omaha Jewish Federation, as the representative body of the entire Omaha Jewish community: •
Israel's enemies can afford to fight a war and lose. They' can come back to fight again. But Israel cannot afford to lose even once. America knows that and America U determined that Israel Is here hi the family of nations to stay.

NEW YORK (JTA)—American Jews, infuriated by the French boycott of arms and spare partsto Israel, are mounting counterm e a s u r e s designed to hurt France's troubled economy. Of« ficial Jewish groups have already brought to the attention of a French diplomat In Washington1 the "mood of deep resentlwent' that prevails among their ~ members. But they took pains to. stress that it is directed against President Charles de Gaulle, who made the embargo decision without consulting his government, and not a g a i n s t the French people. : • Boycott A boycott seems to be developing among some J e w i s h groups against travel to France or the use of French carriers. The immediate victim appears to be Air France, a major international airline that serves Europe and Israel as well as such nearby winter resorts as Mexico and the Caribbean. Unconfirmed reports say that numerous cancellations have hit Air France, since the De Gaulle embargo was announced last week. The B'nai B'rith travel service la discontinuing French tours previously offered, and other Jewish organizations that sponsor, group tours to Europe and Israel have reportedly eliminated France from their itiner-.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: that we urge our representatives in the 'Congress of- thj^ United States to fully support the position heretofore expressed officially by the United States Government in its relationship to the State of Israel and the furnishing of arms to it for its defense and preservation, and that the incoming administration fully support the Republican Platform adopted in 1968 on this subject, and that President-elect Nixon's position stated in his speech to the B.'nai B'rith on September 8,1968, , be the continued policy of the incoming administration. AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: that a copy of this resolution be sent to: / President Lyndon B. Johnson y President-elect Richard M. Denney Representtive David Martin Charles Lucet, Ambassador of France *' * * Following the adoption of the resolution, there was a discussion on action which should be taken by organizations and individuals in the community. It was agreed that organizations a s ' well as individuals should write letters to the. officials named in the resolution, urging them to support Israel in the present critical phase.
