Sir Winston S. Chu r«*u On the eve of his funeral, the world mourns the loss of England's great statesman and champion of peace and freedom, Sir Winston Spencer Churchill. Probably no world statesmen has ever had such n powerful impact and influence on the fate of the Juwu.ii people as did Churchill over the past half century. As a member of the British Cabinet in World War I, he was instrumental in utilizing for the British war effort, the unique genius of Dr. Chaim Wcizmann which ultimately led to the pronouncement of the historic Balfour Declaration promising the Jews a national home in Palestine. As Colonial Secretary, Churchill organized the Mandate Government of Palestine, and installed a Jew, Herbeit Samuel, as it3 first High Commissioner. During his decodes in the political wilderness, until the eve of World War II, he remained a powerful voice in his beloved House of Commons and on the world stage, speaking and fighting for Jewish rights in the Jewish national homeland. His was the most powerful dissent in 1930 when the British Government, appalled by the bloody Arab Palestine riots of 1929, offered a new policy that would have restricted the Jews to a small minority role in Palestine. In 1939 it was the angry figure of Winston Churchill that rose from the Government backbenches to speak an outraged protest of the plan to limit future Jewish immigration to Palestine. It was as Prime Minister and Minister of Defense in World War II that Churchill fought the opposition of members of Ihi? British Government to establish a Jewish Biigade as part of the British military forces to fight the Nazi forces. And it was Churchill, once again, who led the fight for Ernest Bevin, his wartime ally, who as Foreign Secretary sought to scrap British promises and give Palestine to the Arabs. And it was Church, once again, who led the fight for British recognition of the Jewish State in 19-1S. He publicly declared himself to be "a lifolong Zionist" and acted on the belief that "the Jews have made the desert bloom." Winston Spencer Churchill wrote many great pages in the history of the Jewish people. The Jews of the world have indeed "lost a friend,"

News Fhshes-^Around the World | JORDAN WATER Israel—Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, on several occasions this week, served notice that Israel would not permit any diversion of the lieadquarters of the Jordan River that would deprive it of its rightful sliare of the water under the Johnston Plan. He warned that "any attempt to prevent Israel from using its right to part of the Jordan River waters will be regarded as an encroachment of our borders." He described these waters as "like blood in our veins." . , EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS CAUSED BY LACK OF RELIGION New York (JTA)—Teamwork between religion and psychiatry for the prevention and the treatment of emotional disturbances in children was called for today by a leading psychoanalyst at a conference of prominent psychiatrists, social workers and'rabbis. Dr. Hector Ritey, medical director of the Metropolitan Center of Mental Health, said that the lack of religious knowledge and experience is the "common denominator" that is "the underlying cause" of a wide spectrum of emotional disturbances in children. He stressed that religion, through the process of abstract thought, enables a1 child to explain the unknown and understand the ties that bind him to mankind. He indicated that the alternative to this "sense of belonging" is "a vacuum" and said that "the role of reliChairmen and co-chairmen of die JDC!i Women's Division qf the Philanthropies campaign j»ct gious symbols and practices in the family is paramount and irre(his week'with past chairmen (o map plan* for the current campaign.
