Bureau of Jewish Social Researc of New York to Make Survey J. C. C. AND FEDERATION ARE JOINT SPONSORS Announcement was made this week by a joint committee of the Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Welfare Federation that arrangements had been made with the Bureau of Jewish Social Research of New York for the conducting this fall of a thorough and complete survey of all the phases of the local Jewish community. William L. Holzman, president-. of the J. C. C, Dr. Philip Sher, president of the Federation arid SamUel Gerson, executive secretary of both institutions, have been appointed" to make the necessary preparations for the survey. The Bureau of Jewish Social Research of New York, of which Dr. Samuel Goldsmith is executive director, recently completed a similar survey of New York Jewry. Their findings have proven .so valuable that various important changes are being made, such as the combination of some of the largest welfare organizations. . The survey -will begin sometime during September- and. will last for about three months. With the aid of a large citizen's committee, every organization and institution will be investigated with the idea of increasing their respective usefulness. The decision to have the survey made here was Teached following a recent conference with Dr. Goldsmith when he was in Omaha two weeks ago.
Although the Jewish Community is careful to observe all "dry" laws, the building actually bubbles over these mornings. I t seems that so many eager smiles and, carefree laughs were never assembled in one place before. The confines of the structure naturally cannot hold them. Oh, you ask whit the occasion is. Why of course its the Summer Play school. " Imagine if you can, three hundred children," from the innocent age of five to the self-assuring' age of fourteen, all having the, time of their fife and" there you have the picture that can be seen any morning at the Center. /They troop in at nine just before the biasing sun reaches its zenith. Once inside the walls of the building,* it is TO cool that some of the teachers wear their hats (although a marcel lost in the swimming pool ifi probably a more honest explanation of this phenomena). After their twenty-five or so teachers take them to "home room", they are taken to their first class. The girls spend their- time at such obsolete studies as cooking and sewing, while the boys ambitiously undertake to learn how to make airplane models and other things. By the time the morning is over, they go to two other classes and an assembly. Music, dramatics, games, and last, but heaven knows not least swimming, are the diversions that cause all those smiles at the end of the day's school at noon.
bottle of the ice-cold liquid and some crackers. Most of them manage to get the milk down, but not a few who miss the nipple on the bottle get more of a bath than a drink. Of course, although the youngsters have the time of their life, and their mothers get a little peace, there are a few noble martyrs to the cause. The twenty-five teachers are controlling their ardent pupils, but surely not much more. Those boys and girls are there to have a good time and woe unto him who would stop them. In secret of course, even the hard-working young ladies and men admit that they too are getting a great 'Trick" out of it. The only -real malcontents axe those on the office force of the Center. So far they have tried to plug their ears in an effort, to concentrate on their work, but still remain as desperate as ever. And then, when the classes are out and the children invade their sanctuary en masse, well,—-they just don't try to work. A visit to the Play school isnt complete unless you watch the children at noon when the classes are dismissed. One mad rush is made for the telephone. "Ma, (or Pa or Bad) come down after me. I'm at the Jay (we find that this is the 'modernized designation for J. C. C.)" Dr. Sher's social service committee of the Jewish Welfare Federation is sponsering the school and an able staff is operating' it, but three hundred boys and girls are just runAbout the middle of the morning, ning away with it. We pity those the milk line forms.. For the modest youngsters who haven't a hand in price of five cents, the "kids" get a the fun.
