London mayor to attend 7 October exhibition after Jewish News reveals organisers’ dismay at absence
London mayor Sadiq Khan has told Jewish News he’s looking forward to attending the Nova Festival exhibition before it closes next week, to see for himself how the powerful and moving installation has “enabled Londoners to bear witness to the horrific events of 7 October”, writes Michelle Rosenberg. The mayor’s pledge comes after this newspaper revealed organisers were disappointed that while many senior political and religious figures – including Wes Streeting, David Lammy, Angela Rayner and the Archbishop of Canterbury had attended since the exhibition opened in East London on 20
May, the mayor had not. Jo Woolfe, chair and lead partner of the Nova Exhibition London, had expressed frustration in regard to how the mayor’s office appeared to have approached her invitations, suggesting they had eventually corresponded with her proposing dates after the exhibition was meant to have closed – although it has subsequently had its run extended. Woolfe said: “He’s the mayor of London. He really should be here. This is not political, it’s not religious. There were non-Jews killed, there

were Druze murdered, people from all over the world and there was a Brit, Londoner Jake Marlowe, all murdered. He needs to recognise everything in his city, and this is a major event in his city. It’s wrong he hasn’t been.” A spokesperson for the mayor said: “He is looking forward to attending the exhibition very soon and seeing for himself how this powerful and moving installation enables Londoners to bear witness to the horrific events of 7 October. “From the beginning the mayor’s office have been proactive in working with organisers to find a date the mayor can attend the exhibition. Later dates were only considered once it had been announced online that the exhibition was being extended. “Throughout the process, the mayor’s office has continued to reach out to event organisers to find a date that works for both the mayor and the exhibition.” Woolfe expects visitor numbers at the end of the exhibition run to exceed 35,000.
