Dear Readers, Yitzy Halpern

I

from her wonderful son Shmuel Chaim and from her whole family. It is certainly an interesting time to be making a Bar Mitzvah. On the one hand the pressure is off because of the current situation. On the other hand it must be hard to strike the right tone of celebrating while still being cautious and respectful of those around you, who may be at a different level of precaution. I too am making a Bar Mitvah in a few months, so I have been thinking about this a lot. One side of my family is “Corona Light;” I’d say on a scale with ten being panic, they are a one or two. The other side of my family is “Corona Intense;” they are still essentially still quarantining. They are a nine or ten on the Corona scale. So it is going to be quite challenging to find the right balance there. I will certainly try to get some tips on that from Shoshana. We are all in the same boat. But, who knows, yeshuas Hashem K’heref Ayin; we believe that Hashem’s salvation can come in an instant. Hopefully in a few months from now when it’s my son’s Bar Mitzvah, not only will Corona be long gone but Moshiach will have arrived. Until then, I will continue to think about what we will do. And, yes, we did cover that topic three or four times while driving on the Turnpike. Why do you think my husband wanted to turn on Rush? Hope you enjoy this issue. was recently driving down the New Jersey Turnpike with my husband and we were flipping around on talk radio. We tuned into the beginning of the Rush Limbaugh show to hear what the hot political topic of the day was. On long drives, after covering the standard topics— whether to paint the house , which camp to send our son to for the second half, should our daughter go back to Israel for shanna bet, would Yanky be a good shidduch for Malky etc.—we turn our attention to global affairs. As the introductory music played we expected to hear Rush, but there was a guest host who was introduced instead. Upon hearing that my husband turned to me and said, “This guy may feel like he’s in the big leagues because he’s filling in for Rush, but he also knows that the second he uttered his first syllable millions of listeners changed the dial.” I don’t usually listen to talk radio, but my husband explained that there are millions of dedicated Rush listeners who have no interest in hearing what a replacement has to say. Anyways, that is the long version of me softening the blow—this is not Shoshana writing! Wait! Don’t stop reading! All joking aside, I am so happy to have had the opportunity this week to edit TJH so that Shoshana can take a well-deserved break. The truth is, she is making a Bar Mitzvah, so it’s not like she is lounging out in a hammock and drinking Martinis. On that note, I want to wish a big hearty Mazal Tov to Shoshana and her family. We all wish her much nachas, health and happiness

Dear Editor, Your reader Sruly Hertz did not go far enough in criticizing your Notable Quotes page. You constantly have cartoons of donkeys (a.k.a. Democrats) being ridiculed and demeaned. Where is your fair play? Just once I would like to see an elephant (a.k.a. Republican), preferably with a heel spur and preferably with an extremely long red necktie saying ‘Mexico will pay for this tie’. But I won’t hold my breath. Besides, breathing into a mask nowadays is tough enough. Lol. Yours, Charles Tal Fresh Meadows, N.Y. Dear Editor, Anti-Americanism is the new mainstream belief that the Left is lecturing to America. Marie-France Toinet a French scholar defines Anti Americanism that it “is only fully justified if it implies systemic oppression- a sort of allergic reactionto America as a WHOLE.” Her definition of what Anti Americanism is, is truly what the radicals and the Democrats are allowing to happen in our communities. In the past few weeks, we keep seeing statues destroyed by radicals who hate everything about America. Nancy Pelosi’s response is, “Let people do what they want to do.” Democrats are giving

in to these crazy people. Benjamin Crum, the lawyer of George Floyd’s family said that he is very concerned about the idea of erasing history via taking down statues. His concern is justified. Looking back to Saddam Hussein’s fall is where this is seen. One of the first actions done when Hussein fell was to burn his image and to take down statues of Saddam. Looking at the current state of Iraq now is 1000 times worse than in 2003. The man that is famous for using a sledgehammer taking down the statue said in an interview that he wants to go back to those days, because of the worsened conditions. When people erase history, things get worse. Fredrick Douglas, a true American Hero in his famous speech, slammed the idea of slavery not by slamming America, but rather by saying that America is being hypocritical to those beliefs that Douglas says that the US should “Stand by those principles.” Douglas also described our Founding Forefathers as “They loved their country better than from their private interests.” The Left is not like Douglas, The Left wants to destroy America at its core, Douglass wanted America to stay true to its core. Are they so selfish that they only care about their own comfort and have no consideration for the rest of the community? We should be more educated and make better decisions than the average American; but we are acting worse. 1. Halachically - the Torah establishes a Maaka ( a fence) around

a roof, as a precaution from falling. There are so many cases of Syug LaTorah, cases where we establish safeguards to protect the Torah. Shouldn’t we have safeguards against the biggest plague in our lifetimes and wear a mask? 2. Even if you have antibodies, dont be so selfish. Wear a mask and protect the elderly, the infirm, and the majority of the community that do not have antibodies. 3. China, South Korea, Singapore, and many Asian countries have beaten the virus because 99% of their populations are smart enough and considerate to wear masks all the time. Coronavirus Preventing Uman Rosh Hashana Pilgrimage

Tens of thousands of religious Jews may need to make alternative plans for the upcoming Rosh Hashana after Uman will likely be closed to visitors due to the coronavirus. The Ukrainian city is home to the

burial place of Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav and has become a popular pilgrimage site over the past decade. 40,000 Jews flocked to Uman for the Rosh Hashana holiday in 2019 and the numbers were expected to rise even further this year. This year however, Uman’s mayor ruled out admitting foreigners to his city, saying that the deadly pandemic made holding the yearly festival out of the question. In a video released on Facebook, Mayor Oleksandr Tserbiy said that “every year about 30,000 pilgrims come to Uman to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, but this year, the coronavirus pandemic made adjustments to our life.” “It’s a very difficult situation in the world and in Ukraine,” he added. “In Uman, the situation is under control…but the arrival of a large number of foreigners from different countries could cause a coronavirus outbreak in our town.” While Uman will permit entry to those who can present proof of a negative COVID-19 test, they would still need to quarantine for 14 days. This, said the mayor, is likely impossible in the crammed eastern European hamlet in which visitors commonly

stay for only a few days at a time. “The government foresees the second wave of coronavirus in September. In the current situation, I stand against the arrival of pilgrims this year,” stressed Tserbiy. The mayor’s announcement comes after Israel’s envoy to Ukraine called on the faithful to avoid traveling to the gravesite in order to prevent a rise in coronavirus cases. Ukraine’s Jewish community criticized Tserbiy’s ban as political in nature and said that the country’s leaders would likely overturn the decision. “Unfortunately, we are forced to acknowledge that the position of city head of Uman Oleksandr Tsebriy looks like a conscious and intentional provocation of the interethnic conflict,” said community leader Nathan Nissim Ben-Nun.

Pentagon Vows Action if Russian Bounties Proven Senior Defense Department officials vowed to “take action” if intelligence accusing Russia of putting fi-

nancial bounties on dead US soldiers could be proven true.

At an appearance before the House Armed Services Committee probing the use of the military during last month’s violent riots, General Mark Milley called the reports “uncorroborated”. Contradicting numerous reports to the contrary, both officials also denied being briefed on the matter. However, both the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Defense Secretary Mark Esper pledged to “take action” if the intelligence could be proven. “In the case of the Russians, we do not have concrete, corroborating evidence, intelligence to show ‘directing.’ That’s a big difference. The bounties aimed to increase the violence and scuttle negotiations between the Taliban and the US which eventually turned into a formal peace agreement between the two sides. US intelligence got wind of Russia’s activities from interrogating captured militants. The report stressed that it remains unclear when the cash rewards

Istanbul’s famed Hagia Sophia museum will become a mosque after a Turkish court gave the final approval on Friday. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Hagai Sophia was constructed 1,500 years ago as an Orthodox Christian cathedral. It was turned into a mosque after the Ottoman Empire conquered Constantinople in 1453. In 1934, the famed site became a museum under the orders of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, a secularist who founded the modern country of Turkey after the Ottoman Empire collapsed. Since then, the museum has become a point of contention between those who want Turkey to remain a secular republic and Muslim activists who want to return to the days of Islamic rule. In the decision on Friday, the court annulled the 1934 order transforming the Hagai Sophia into a museum. Hours later, Turkish President Racep Erdogan announced that the compound will immediately begin operating as a site for Muslim worship, with prayers beginning on July 24th. Shortly after, the Islamic call to prayer sounded from the Hagai Sophia for the first time in 86 years. On Saturday morning, police began fencing off the area while Islamic clergy were seen inspecting the site. Despite consistent requests, Biden has refused to commit to any policies that would constitute a significant change to the longstanding US support for the State of Israel. “The progressives want a full-throttle platform change - a pro-Palestinian flank, an anti-annexation flank - but there just isn’t appetite in the campaign so far,” said an insider. The report comes after PA Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyah said last week that he hoped a Biden presidency would be more friendly towards the Palestinians. “If Mr. Biden is elected in November, we hope that it will be a totally different dynamic,” Shtayyah said. Mossad Thwarted Iranian Terror Plots Targeting Embassies As Iranian nuclear plants continue to be wracked by a series of mysterious explosions, a new report says that the Mossad thwarted a

Tehran-backed plot targeting Israeli embassies overseas. The plot was exposed by Israel’s Channel 12, which said that the majority of the details were blocked for publication by the military censor. According to the report, Iran had attempted to detonate explosives in a series of Israeli embassies in Europe and Asia but was stopped at the last second by the Mossad intelligence agency.

Channel 12 was barred from mentioning the specific countries that had been targeted by Iran and its proxies. The report added that the plots had been thwarted due to the excellent relationship the Mossad enjoyed with local intelligence

Israel’s government relaxed a slew of restrictions despite the soaring numbers of daily coronavirus infections. Starting from Monday, public transportation will continue after 10:00 PM. Air conditioners on city busses will be allowed to operate and the windows will not have to remain open, despite a government decision last week to the contrary. However, busses will be allowed up to 50% occupancy. The Transportation Ministry will also increase the number of busses on certain packed bus lines during rush hour in order to reduce overcrowding. The decision was made following the suggestion of Transportation Minister Miri Regev, who visited several central bus stations across the country on Sunday to see the situation for herself. “I see that things are going well and I thank the drivers, bus operators and the public for their patience,” said Regev. Swimming pools and gyms will also be allowed to reopen with heavy restrictions including limited capacity and the requirement to check every customer’s temperature prior to entering. The change came after the Health Ministry admitted that there was no evidence that swimming

pools and gyms caused coronavirus outbreaks. In addition, Israel will now permit foreigners to enter the country to attend festive events such as birthdays, Bar Mitzvahs, and weddings. Permission must be officially granted by an Israeli consulate before boarding a flight and can only be approved within two weeks of the departure date. Grandparents can also come to Israel for the birth of a grandchild and can arrive one month before the expected due date. They can remain in the country for up to a month following the birth. Siblings of children celebrating their bar or bat mitzvah and their spouses are also allowed along with children under the age of one. Until now, spouses and children of siblings were not allowed to enter Israel for weddings. Brothers or sisters-inlaw of the bride or groom will also be approved to attend weddings and children under one year old can enter if accompanied by a parent. The changes come despite the country’s devastating “second wave” of coronavirus infections that has put large parts of the country into lockdown. On Monday, Israel recorded 1,234 new cases, bringing the total number of active infections to 40,248 with 365 deaths. On Saturday, for the first time, the number of active cases overtook the number of those who have recovered.

DeSean Jackson to Visit U.S. Holocaust Museum

After Jackson’s anti-Semitic Instagram post, the Jewish wide receiver offered to bring him to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. In a viral video, Edelman promised to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture in return. “Afterwards, we grab some burgers and we have those uncomfortable conversations,” said Edelman. Now, Jackson appears to have acceded to Edelman’s offer after the two spoke on the phone on Friday morning. While details remain scant, Edelman tweeted that “DeSean and I spoke for a while last night. We’re making plans to use our experiences to educate one another and grow together.” “Stay tuned,” added Edelman. The offer came after Jackson shared a quote mistakenly attributed to Adolph Hitler accusing the Jews of being behind most of the world’s ills. Jackson also praised prominent anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan in a slew of other Instagram posts. Jackson has since apologized and deleted the offending passages. The posts caused a storm across the United States, and Edelman soon released a video hitting back at

Jackson’s anti-Semitic messages. “I have seen DeSean play in his career, make outstanding football plays, we’ve communicated over social media. I’ve got nothing but respect for his game. I know he said some ugly things, but I do see an opportunity to have a conversation,” Edelman said in a video he shared on Instagram. “I am proud of my Jewish heritage, and for me, it is not just about religion. It’s about community and culture as well,” he added. “I am unusual because I didn’t identify as Jewish until later in my life. Whenever I encountered hatred, it never really felt like it was aimed at me. “It was only after I was part of this community that I learned how destructive hate is. Anti-Semitism is one of the oldest forms of hatred. It’s rooted in ignorance and fear.”

Michael Cohen Back in Custody Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s disgraced former ‘fixer’, is back in prison. The former Trump Corpora-

tion attorney was rearrested and is now at a federal detention center in Brooklyn after violating the terms of his release. The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) confirmed that Cohen “refused the conditions of his home confinement and as a result, has been returned to a BOP facility”.

According to CNN, the dispute revolves around a book Cohen is writing about his experience working for the president. As part of the terms of his early release from prison, Cohen is forbidden from contacting the media in any way. Yet with the imminent release of his tell-all book in September, Cohen has refused to abide by the restrictions on his contact with the press. Through his lawyers, Cohen claimed that the condition is highly

unusual and even “unfair,” pointing out that it has never been used before with any other inmate. Cohen’s attorney Jeffrey Levine said that the terms deprived his client of his “First Amendment rights to communicate with the media.” “I’ve never seen any language like this in my life,” he told reporters. Levine denied that his client had violated the terms of his release, saying that Cohen “did not violate any of the terms and conditions of his release… and any assertion or suggestion to the contrary would be wholly inaccurate and untrue.” Cohen, 53, was given a threeyear sentence in August, 2018 for lying to Congress and campaign finance fraud. He had been serving out his sentence in New York State Otisville Correctional Facility but was released early due to the coronavirus outbreak.

only days before he was slated to begin his three-year prison sentence. Stone, a former Trump campaign manager and longtime confidant, was scheduled to begin serving out his prison term this previous Tuesday after being found guilty of lying to Congress. He filed an emergency motion to the US Court of Appeals after his motion to begin his sentence on September 3rd was denied.

After the court rejected his appeal on Friday, Trump commuted the prison sentence of his longtime advisor. Unlike a pardon, Stone’s criminal conviction remains and he will have a criminal record. However, he will not spend the 40 months behind bars that he was given. The decision was announced in a press statement on Friday evening and comes after Trump repeatedly slammed the prosecutors, jury and judge as politically biased. “Roger Stone is a victim of the Russia Hoax that the Left and its allies in the media perpetuated for years in an attempt to undermine the Trump presidency,” said Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany. Trump added in a tweet that Stone was “targeted by an illegal Witch Hunt”. The decision to commute Stone’s sentence predictably resulted in an avalanche of criticism from Democrats, who called the move evidence of the wide-ranging “corruption” within the Trump administration. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi alleged that commuting Stone’s sentence was “an act of staggering corruption” and called for a review of the president’s powers to pardon or commute sentences. “Legislation is needed to ensure that no President can pardon or commute the sentence of an individual who is engaged in a cover-up campaign to shield that President from criminal prosecution,” Pelosi said.

“President Trump has engaged in countless acts that are both self-serving and destructive to our democracy while in office, but commuting the sentence of Roger Stone, a crony who lied and obstructed our investigation to protect Trump himself, is among the most offensive to the rule of law and principles of justice,” added House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff. Among Republicans, only Utah Senator Mitt Romney went on record as opposing the president, slamming Trump’s “unprecedented, historic corruption”. Stone was convicted of perjury in November for making false statements to Congress regarding his ties to WikiLeaks. A jury also found Stone guilty of six additional counts of witness tampering and obstruction for his efforts to thwart Robert Mueller’s probe into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Judge Refuses to Dismiss Michael Flynn Case

Former National Security Advisor and decorated General Michael Flynn’s legal ordeal continues after Judge Emmet Sullivan asked the DC Court of Appeals to review the case. Last month, a three-judge panel ordered Sullivan to dismiss the case after the Department of Justice dropped the charges against Flynn. The former intelligence officer is awaiting sentencing since pleading guilty to charges of perjury two years ago for lying to FBI agents. Yet Sullivan delayed closing the case and has now requested that the entire appeals court reconsider. Now, the DC Circuit will consider whether to hold a vote to revive the case entirely in a move that would be highly unusual. If granted, all judges on the appeals court would rehash the case

A lawyer for Sullivan argued in a lengthy court filing that the panel’s ruling ordering him to drop the charges “threatens to turn ordinary judicial process upside-down”. “It is the district court’s job to consider and rule on pending motions, even ones that seem straightforward,” wrote Sullivan’s lawyer, Beth Wilkinson. “This Court, if called upon, reviews those decisions - it does not preempt them.” Flynn had served as President Trump’s national security adviser for only 24 days before being forced to resign in January 2017 amid reports that he lied to the FBI about a phone call with the Russian ambassador to Washington. He has awaited sentencing ever since and was expected to receive jail time. However, Flynn has asked to withdraw his guilty plea amid a slew of new explanatory evidence showing extreme prosecutorial misconduct from the FBI. The numerous cases of abuse caused the Department of Justice to dismiss the charges last month,

normally an ordinary procedure that would end the case. Yet Sullivan has refused to acquiesce to the request, bizarrely appointing a retired judge to argue against the measure. Sullivan’s irregular actions led Flynn’s attorney Sidney Powell to appeal to a higher appellate court, which ordered that Sullivan must follow precedent and dismiss the case.

Robert De Niro’s Finances take a Hit

Robert De Niro, one of the world’s most legendary actors, is said to be badly in debt after his finances were devastated by the worldwide pandemic.

Last week, De Niro’s former wife Grace Hightower petitioned the judge to force the movie star to raise her monthly credit card allowance from $50,000 to $100,000. In response, De Niro’s attorneys revealed that his finances have come under significant financial strain after business dried up for his Nobu restaurant chain and the Greenwich Hotel. According to De Niro attorney Caroline Krauss, Nobu hemorrhaged more than $3 million in April and another $1.87 million in May. The ‘Taxi Driver’ lead actor’s finances are said to be in such bad shape that he needed to borrow $500,000 in June in order to meet his debts to investors “because he doesn’t have the cash.” “His accountants and business managers say that the best case for Mr. De Niro, if everything starts to turn around this year he is going to be lucky if he makes $7.5 million this year,” said Krauss. The coronavirus also halted all current movie projects and delayed the start of others, preventing De Niro from his most lucrative source of income. In addition, most of the money he earned from the award-winning mob flick ‘The Irishman’ has already been paid out, leaving De Niro only

$2.5 million this year in royalties. “These people, in spite of his robust earnings, have always spent more than he has earned so this 76-year-old robust man couldn’t retire even if he wanted to because he can’t afford to keep up with his lifestyle expense,” said Krauss.

At least 21 people were injured after a fire engulfed the USS Bonhomme Richard at the US Naval Base in San Diego. The blaze broke out at about 8:30 on Sunday morning in the llower cargo hold while the ship was docked at the 3400 block. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a large explosion prior to the blaze, which sent large plumes of smoke billowing over downtown San Diego. Firefighters battled the threealarm conflagration well into Sunday evening and deployed fireboats to drown the ship’s blackened gray hull with retardant. A special effort was made to prevent the fire from spreading to the lower part of the ship where 6 million gallons of gasoline were stored. As expected, the Washington Redskins will change its name due to the controversial racial connotations associated with the football team’s moniker. The change was announced on Monday morning and comes only a week after owner Dan Snyder promised to “review” the Redskins’ nickname. “On July 3rd, we announced the commencement of a thorough review of the team’s name. That review has begun in earnest,” said the team. “As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans and community apprised of our thinking as we go forward. Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review.” The replacement has not yet been chosen and will be unveiled at a later date. The donation will come in the form of 15.97 million Class B shares of Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway investment fund. It is Buffett’s 15th annual donation since the 90-yearold tycoon began giving away his considerable wealth in 2006. Over the last 15 years, Buffett has gifted more than $37.4 billion to charity, the majority in Berkshire stock. Much of this has gone to the Gates Foundation, a charity run by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife that focuses on fighting poverty. Owning more than $46 billion in assets, the Gates Foundation is thought to be the world’s largest private philanthropic fund. The Foundation said in a statement that it was “awed” at Buffett’s largesse and his dedication to fighting inequality. “Over the past 15 years, we have enjoyed a special friendship with Warren, and his advice has had a major influence on us,” said the charity. “Warren has not only an amazing intellect but also a strong sense of justice. Warren’s wisdom will help us do a better job and make it more fun at the same time.” Buffett is estimated by Forbes magazine to be worth around $71.4 billion, making him the 7th richest man in the world. Fight between 2 Brothers Led to Treatment for Bite Wounds & COVID-19 Test

Two brothers at Zoo Miami got into a pretty nasty fight landing one

of them in the hospital. “Shango” the lowland gorilla and his 26-yearold brother, “Barney,” battled it out, biting each other and causing some serious damage. Shango was rushed to the hospital and treated for his wounds. While there, he received X-rays, vaccinations, an ultrasound, a TB test, and a bronchoscopy, as part of his overall preventative medicine program. In addition, he received COVID-19 tests , due to lowgrade fever. The tests were negative. While conflicts between adult gorillas are common, most consist of showing off and posturing and don’t usually lead to injury. In this case though, due to the power of Barney’s bite, X-Rays were performed to ensure that there was no skeletal damage. No abnormalities were detected and Shango recovered well from the procedure. While eager to be reunited with his brother, no decision has been made on when Shango will be back together with Barney. For now, continued behavioral assessments will be made by the staff who will also observe the progress of his injuries.

HAFTR Holds Unprecedented Graduations

020 has certainly been a year of firsts. Following weeks of speculation regarding how graduation would be held, a virtual graduation was postponed in hopes of being able to gather in person. HAFTR was thrilled to announce a first in the school’s history - that not one, but two outdoor, hybrid, in-person and drive-in graduations would be held. The eighth grade and twelfth grade graduates of the Class of 2020, along with parents and families, were elated to hear the news that they would be able to join together and celebrate under the starry sky! Through two days of anticipated thunderstorms, the rain came and went but ultimately ceased, and rainbows dazzled in the sky as the weather held up perfectly for both the Middle School and High School events. Hundreds of graduates, parents, grandparents, and siblings joined together one more time in person to celebrate the students’ accomplishments. Cars spread almost half a mile down the block as families pulled into The Sands Atlantic Beach through a tunnel of balloons. They were greeted with great fanfare by teachers and administrators and welcomed with programs and snacks as everyone gathered to experience something unique and unprecedented. As a sign of the times, graduates were given HAFTR branded masks to wear for the ceremony, graciously sponsored by the HAFTR PTA. The programs were live-streamed for everyone who could not fit in the car, which was a wonderful opportunity for grandparents and family who do not live locally to participate in this momentous occasion. Over 1,500 people tuned in, making these the highest attended HAFTR graduations ever! HAFTR High School Graduation On Monday, June 29 at the HAFTR High School graduation, Principal Ms. Naomi Lippman welcomed everyone who gathered to celebrate this enormous milestone in the lives of the graduates. “This moment is made even more precious because of the circumstances in which we are conducting your graduation: with all of the young men and women of the Class of 2020 seated together, gathered in person as a grade for the first time since

March. We appreciate how blessed we are to be together with you—and how happy you are to share this event with your classmates, teachers and family,” she shared. HAFTR is proud of its long-standing legacy of excellence as over one quarter of this year’s High School graduates are the next generation to join the distinguished ranks of HAFTR graduates children or grandchildren of HAFTR, Hillel or HILI alumni. Ms. Lippman, along with many of the other speakers, mentioned how special this graduating class is. “When you crossed the threshold into

HAFTR High School for the first time, I was struck by your sweetness, your optimism, your inclusivity and your good nature,” she started. “You have enhanced and enriched each other’s experience with your kindness and inclusiveness. Although your last semester in high school will always be associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, what truly distinguishes you is the wonderful legacy you have left for the students who will follow your path through HAFTR High School.” High School valedictorian Jeffrey Wolberg briefly discussed what ‘the pursuit of happiness’ means to this class. As John Lennon once said, “life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” “We must embrace meaningful experiences and relationships to live life to the fullest,” Jeffrey suggested. “If we limit our happiness only to those moments when milestones are achieved, then we are short-changing ourselves. “On behalf of the class, the things that we will truly value about our high school years are not expressed in any grade listed on our transcript,” said Jeffrey. “Rather, we will remember the stimulating class discussions we had with our teachers, the inspiring mishmars we had with our rebbeim, the deep connections we’ve made with our friends, the enjoyable experiences that we had in our clubs, and the sports that we have played. Around the Community felt relationships and these events where we derive much happiness.” Salutatorian David Lederer discussed that this is a grade incomparable in the amount of resilience and fortitude that they possess. “We are a unique student body with a wide range of leaders, academics, musicians, computer wizards, and talented individuals,” he acknowledged. “Our class consists of businessmen who built empires in the teenage shoe industry and our very own clothing designers. We have one of the most politically charged grades from which we may see future ambassadors and leaders of our communities.” Lederer congratulated his fellow classmates that “of all the classes for this to happen to, it is our class that was most fit to tackle the challenges that COVID-19 presented.” As Ms. Lippman so eloquently put it, “now, fortified with profound life lessons you learned this last semester, you are truly ready for the next stage of your exciting journey.” So, HAFTR is proud to send its graduates off with its blessing, abiding affection, and tefilot for your safety and wellbeing. HAFTR Middle School Graduation On Wednesday, July 1, HAFTR Middle School Principal Mr. Josh Gold welcomed the graduates. “I believe that you will be a class that goes on to create, innovate, and be ambassadors of the values of Modern Orthodox Judaism in our world,” he said.

Salutatorian Michal Mari’s message to the graduating class reflected on lessons learned and how much growth has occurred during middle school. “At HAFTR Middle School we’ve been taught about a growth mindset,” Michal started. “We not only heard these words, but we saw them posted in the hallways, and learned to live these words. We’ve been taught that nothing is impossible. We’ve learned enthusiasm and pride in our religious instruction.” “We’ve learned the meaning of grit and resilience,” she continued. “We have experienced a blackout, a fire, a pandemic, and quarantine, and yet we continued learning.” “We recognize that so many have suffered and lost loved ones,” Michal concluded. “Yet, we are here, together, celebrating, and recognizing our accomplishments and those people who helped us get here.” Valedictorian Kaitlyn Pollack shared, “I remember the endless memories I’ve made here. I remember making new friends and creating bonds with teachers. I was influenced to try many new things. My teachers truly helped me become a better person. Through good times and bad we have always been one big family.” “Our 2020 vision is not of what’s to come, but what we already have,” she continued. “I ask you to ponder upon this. NCYI Calls on Social Media to Toughen Stance against Anti-Semitism Calls for Nick Cannon to Be Removed as Host of Fox’s The Masked Singer After He Spread Anti-Semitic Conspiracy Theories on YouTube

T

he National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) today called on social media platforms, including Instagram and Twitter, to duly enforce their respective policies relating to hate speech and take a tougher stance to keep anti-Semitic rhetoric off of their platforms following a recent flurry of racist anti-Semitic posts by prominent athletes and celebrities. Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson, former NBA star Stephen Jackson; former NFL running back Larry Johnson; and Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Malik Jackson; all posted comments on social media that were highly offensive, including intimating that Jews control all of the banks, alleged quotes by Adolf Hitler, and praise for Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who has a history of making outrageous and hateful comments aimed at Jews. While DeSean Jackson reacted to the firestorm that ensued by apologizing and agreeing to visit Auschwitz and

the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, others have either not apologized or have offered weak apologies. The NCYI is questioning why these athletes’ posts and the American rapper and actor Ice Cube’s hate-filled posts were allowed to remain on Instagram and Twitter in the first place, considering the companies’ guidelines concerning offensive content. “In light of the rash of offensive anti-Semitic posts by a number of athletes, as well as the ongoing flood of racist posts that openly spew hatred directed at the Jewish community, it is readily apparent that Instagram and Twitter need to do a much better job flagging racist content and taking immediate steps to remove them from the public sphere,” said the NCYI Board of Directors. “With a national conversation taking place about race, and as anti-Semitism continues increasing at a frightening pace and hate crimes against Jews have become far too common, it is unacceptable and ir-

responsible for Instagram and Twitter to facilitate bigotry on their respective platforms. We call upon all social media and traditional media platforms to actively enforce their policies and live up to their own stated standards.” “Quoting Adolf Hitler, a man who has the blood of six-million Jews, including one-and-a-half million Jewish children, on his hands, discussing the Rothschilds and Jews controlling banks, and praising Nation of Islam founder Louis Farrakhan, a blatant anti-Semite who has compared Jews to termites and who has called Hitler ‘a very great man,’ unquestionably qualifies as anti-Semitism and has no place on Instagram or Twitter, much less in a civilized society,” the NCYI board said. “Instagram and Twitter must make it clear that they will not stay silent while anti-Semitism propagates on their platforms,” the NCYI board added. “Rules are not intended to be mere suggestions, and if Instagram and Twitter fail to follow their own guidelines pertaining to hate speech and racist posts, they become complicit in the perpetuation of anti-Semitism and the denigration of Jews. When it comes to hate speech and anti-Semitism, Instagram and Twitter need to start enforcing their own procedures. This is not about freedom of speech; it is about taking responsible and necessary steps to curtail incitement against the Jewish people.” Instagram’s “Community Guidelines” state that, “We remove content that contains credible threats or hate speech, content that targets private individuals to degrade or shame them, personal information meant to blackmail or harass someone, and repeated unwanted messages….It’s never OK to encourage violence or attack anyone based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, disabilities, or diseases.” According to Twitter’s “Hateful Conduct Policy,” users “may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, caste, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease.” The policy states that the company is “committed to combating abuse motivated

by hatred, prejudice or intolerance, particularly abuse that seeks to silence the voices of those who have been historically marginalized,” and that Twitter prohibits “targeting individuals with content intended to incite fear or spread fearful stereotypes about a protected category.” Twitter also prohibits “targeting individuals with repeated slurs, tropes or other content that intends to dehumanize, degrade or reinforce negative or harmful stereotypes about a protected category,” as “the dehumanization of a group of people based on their religion, age, disability, or serious disease.” If a user violates Twitter’s rules, the company requires “the violator to remove it before they can Tweet again.” Other enforcement actions include hiding a Tweet while awaiting its removal and permanent suspension. The NCYI board also called on actor and TV host Nick Cannon to publicly apologize for disseminating Protocols of the Elders of Zion-type conspiracy theories against Jews and anti-Semitic tropes on his YouTube channel. “It is unfathomable that a television personality such as Nick Cannon can make contemptible comments about the Jewish people and not be held accountable for his despicable behavior,” the NCYI board said. “Mr. Cannon must disavow his anti-Semitic remarks and issue an apology, and his refusal to do so should result in the termination of his contract with Fox and his removal from television. Hate has no place anywhere, including YouTube and TV, and if Nick Cannon fails to understand that, he does not deserve to have a public platform.” For the past 108 years, the National Council of Young Israel has ably served the broader Jewish community. With more than 25,000 member families and approximately 135 branch synagogues throughout the United States, Canada, and Israel, the National Council of Young Israel is a multi-faceted organization that embraces Jewish communal needs and often takes a leading role in tackling the important issues that face the Jewish community in North America and Israel.

Schools Reopening: From the Desk of NYC City Comptroller Scott Singer

C

OVID-19 has taken a huge toll on our students, parents, school staff, and all working families in the education system. One in every 300 Americans is a New York City public school student — 1.1 million students. Since the shutdown of our schools, students have had to adjust to the challenges of remote learning, and as parents, we’ve tried our best to give our kids the support they need to succeed in these difficult times. We are now staring down our next great challenge — how to safely and equitably reopen schools. But while the City has begun to discuss plans for the fall in broad outlines, we do not yet have clear information on where children are supposed to go during off days – or even what the options are. The City has not yet offered specific details on improving remote learning for the upcoming school year or a roadmap to provide enough staff for both in-person classroom support and afterschool and child care, nor have we heard

the strategy to address the need for a full time nurse on staff at every school. We can’t take for granted the quality of our education system at this moment — and we can’t afford to make mistakes with our children’s futures. To safely reopen schools, we need to focus on the safety and protection of everyone in the school community. Last week, I released a roadmap to do just that. My plan, Strong Schools For All: A Plan Forward for New York City, calls for the DOE to follow the guidance of the latest medical and scientific knowledge and implement rigorous safety and cleaning protocols at every school in consultation with public health experts, partners in labor, and parents — before any reopening decisions are made. When it comes to reopening schools safely, my plan recommends that the DOE: • Require consistent use of masks or face coverings for students and

staff • Mandate physical distancing • Establish consistent, small cohorts of 10 to 12 students to limit the potential spread of COVID-19 • Provide pooled testing, aggressive contact tracing and daily temperature scans • Provide a full-time nurse on staff at every school in the city • Invest in enhanced cleanings and the latest technologies • Repurpose available spaces and identify outdoor and other well-ventilated spaces for learning activities • Prioritize social-emotional learning by ensuring every school has a full-time social worker and guidance counsellor • Make accommodations for highrisk teachers, administrators, and other school staff To ensure strong instruction continues uninterrupted, we need to: • Increase staffing in classrooms • Build days that offer the most inschool class-time for the most students • Sustain the capacity of the child care sector • Invest in high quality remote learning • Give every student a free internet-connected device • Engage and support parents and caregivers in multiple languages If we aren’t smart and prepared for the upcoming school year, our students will suffer — especially lower-income students of color who

are already facing disparities. And our economic recovery will also be severely hampered because without school there can be no real return to work for so many of our families. The forced closures of child care centers and low enrollment due to COVID-19, combined with scant financial aid, has brought the child care sector to a breaking point — and we need creative and comprehensive solutions to solve this crisis. Without free access to child care, parents with children in elementary and middle school cannot feasibly return to work and provide for their families — threatening any recovery. To help give relief to working families, the DOE should consider the possibility of double sessions each day, as the City has successfully done before. By splitting the school day in half and allowing some children to attend school in the morning and the rest in the afternoon, students would have some in-school time every day or parents would have some predictable hours that they could devote to work on a daily basis. New York City should be leading the nation in figuring out how to safely reopen our schools with a high standard of instruction that maintains academic excellence — while also allowing parents and families to head back to work. So let's come together to make that a reality for our children and families across this city.

amp Funshine in North Woodmere has had an unbelievable start to the 2020 season! The camp is following all of the State safety guidelines for camps while providing its campers with the healthy outlet they have been missing for the prior 3 months! This past week the campers enjoyed an adorable Trike-A-Thon to benefit Chai Lifeline! Everyone had a blast riding their trikes around the tracks as the rest of their bunkmates cheered along. Funshine campers have enjoyed amazing specialties this year, a cute water park area, ter-

rific bounce houses, and the warmest staff around. Each week has featured more exciting shows and entertainers. The “Parrot Rebbe” came to visit us with some very special friends last week. All the birds were racing and soaring around the room, and a few even went on the staff members’ shoulders! The Bubble Show was epic, and the kids loved the “Mr. Fish Circus Show” since it was o-FISH-ally awesome! The summer has been a huge success at Camp Funshine, the camp where every child shines!

Still, it was the Arizal who instituted this segulah and underscored its greatness, teaching us “when a minyan of ten ehrliche yiden gather at midnight and perform the special Ketores Segulah with kavana, they make a tremendous impact in shamayim and poel tremendous salvations.” Throughout our long, bitter galus years, gedolei hatzadikim, including the holy Apta Rav and Shinover Rav, zt”l, advised yidden to perform the holy segula, so they should merit life and peace and salvation. And so, the talmidei chachamim of Kollel Chatzos and their partners

For the past several years, after the talmidei chachamim performed the Ketores Segulah on behalf of hundreds of yidden from around the world who yearn for a yeshua, countless of these individuals called to share the miraculous yeshuos they merited in the merit of this segula. Camp Shira Girls Enjoy Another “Summer to Sing About”

A Little Girl’s Dream. A Kallah’s Reality. By Shira Frechter

L

ittle girls play with dolls. They spend their time pretending and dreaming, living vicariously through these figurines, often imagining what life will be like as a “grown up.” Little girls dream of their very own prince charming.They envision what their wedding will look like and, again and again, attempt to recreate it with their miniature furniture, mismatched tiny clothing, and rows of stuffed animals as guests, awaiting the arrival of the kallah and her chosson to grace the presence of all who are attending the mock chuppah in “the play room.” But then, those little girls grow up. They learn that life isn’t as sim-

ple as it was when they had their dolls. Reality is not as friendly or magical as they once imagined. Challenges arise. Hardships surface. Money is tight. Family struggles evolve. Illness strikes. This is not “the dream” wedding envisioned as a little girl. In this community alone, the number of individuals and young couples alike that experience these difficulties, daily, are shocking. Without any financial support, dream weddings become ridden with burden. Finally, the now “grown-up” little girl is a kallah. She has endured the challenging realities of life and has found her chosson, her very own prince charming. But the dream wedding she had once envisioned and hoped for is no longer in reach.

The couple just doesn’t have the resources to allow for it. This story is one heard in the community all too often, but one that the Be’er Miriam Tzipporah Hachnosas Kallah Fund does its best to assist. We, the community, step up. Dr. David Schechter Answers COVID-19 Related Questions tests? Or will everything be pending and used under the EUA for the foreseeable future? A: It is unknown when the FDA will approve COVID-19 tests. The FDA has punted to local states/territory authorities for COVID-19 testing laboratory accuracy.

Q: Do antibodies really disappear? After how long? A: Yes. Studies have suggested this occurs weeks to months after recovery. Q: Can someone with a past COVID-19 infection get infected again? A: Yes. There is likely a degree of immunity that some individuals may have, but only transiently, allowing reinfection to occur. Q: I tested positive for antibodies to COVID-19. Should I give blood plasma? A: Donating blood is a very worthy cause in general. However, to my knowledge there is no substantial data in peer reviewed journals that indicates that convalescent plasma can be a standard treatment for COVID-19 patients, or any virally infected patients despite its use over the past >100 years of this attempted therapy. Q: Since it is the summer can we assume that COVID-19 is almost gone and resume to normal? If not, when can we get back to normal? A: Firstly, the word normal is very relative. I would prefer to focus on being healthy and promoting a healthy immune system with proper sleep, diet, and exercise. Our past experience with the common flu was caused by viruses with very limited lifespans outside the body on surfaces such as tables and doorknobs. Unfortunately, COVID-19’s viral lifespan on environmental surfaces is quite long and therefore poses a persistent threat. For example, after a COVID-19 infection, limited immunity may exist for possibly

a few months and reexposure to COVID-19 after this time may cause a reinfection. Therefore, we cannot assume that COVID-19 is almost gone. Until both an adequate vaccine and effective medical therapy are available we cannot get back to ‘normal’. However, let us respect our new normal status with frequent hand cleaning, social distancing, and appropriately timed face coverings. Avail yourself to nasal swabs to help exclude COVID-19. Q: I heard that rapid tests are less accurate. What can I do to ensure that the tests my children take are accurate? A: A positive nasal swab for COVID-19 will keep your children from going to camp. If you think this is falsely positive, especially if it is done in a rapid analyzer, immediately repeat the nasal swab. This should be done at a formal laboratory using

equipment with pending approval from the FDA, usually requiring between 40 minutes- 4 hours for analysis. Q: I have heard of false positives, but do false negatives exist as well? A: Yes. Q: On the news, the NYC mayor’s office said that sending children to school would be like experimenting with guinea pigs. What do you think? A: Children cannot be expected to observe social distance and frequent handwashing, although this would be ideal. Therefore, children can easily be potential sources of spreading the virus among themselves or older people, even without having an active infection. In general, children are not targets for potentially lethal COVID-19 infections. The older population and those with risk factors (e.g. hypertension, diabetes, and immunosuppression) are the vulnerable targets of potentially lethal COVID-19 infections. Protection of the vulnerable population remains the primary focus. Q: When will the FDA approve

Outpouring of Thanks to Hashem as North American Lomdei Dirshu Take First Public Post Corona Test

Rejoicing in the Reopening! Anyone who has ever attended a Dirshu testing site can attest to the atmosphere of quiet tension permeating the air. The Lakewood testing site was no different this past Sunday night, 13 Tammuz/July 5. Hundreds of lomdim came together in the first post-corona test. Suddenly, in the middle of the test, the voice of Dirshu’s North American Director, Rabbi Ahron Gobioff, broke the silence. “The last thing we want to do is interrupt all these distinguished lomdei Torah as they take their tests, yet we must pause for just a few minutes to contemplate the chasdei Hashem. It has been nearly four months since we last came together. A lot has happened. We cannot just continue without giving shevach v’hodaah to the Ribbono Shel Olam that baruch Hashem we are back!” His words were followed by a surge of music. Hundreds of lomdim jumped from their seats and began a beautiful rekida circling the bais medrash, singing and thanking Hashem for

once more affording them the opportunity to come together and take the tests after having to learn and take the tests at home for so many months. “It was a surreal experience,” said Rabbi Eliezer Feld. “Yes, I learned my Dirshu limudim throughout the difficult corona period, even when I was sick at home with corona-induced fever. My home became my bais medrash and my testing site, but it feels so good to be back and take the test b’rov am.” On Sunday, the vast majority of Dirshu testing sites in North America reopened and the feeling of simcha was felt throughout. Whether it was Boro Park, Monsey, Williamsburg, or the summer Catskills location, in all of these locales a beautiful l’chaim with enthusiastic singing and dancing was held to thank Hashem for the zechus to again come together. Rav Dovid Hofstedter: Gilui Shechinah… Fought by the Satan At the testing site in the Dirshu Bais Medrash in Toronto, the Nasi of Dirshu, Rav Dovid Hofstedter said that the zechus to come together and take the tests is not something we should take for granted. “We must all collectively say, ‘Hodu l’Hashem ki tov, ki l’olam chasdo’ and realize what chasdei Hashem we have just experienced by being able to come

together after all of these months. Not all communities can do this yet.� In his short remarks, Rav Hofstedter put the recent difficult period sustained by Klal Yisroel into historical context. “The transition and transformation that we underwent this year is mind boggling. We had just finished celebrating the colossal kiddush Hashem of siyumei haShas worldwide, where from all over the globe, lomdei Torah came together to celebrate the tremendous accomplishments of yedias and ameilus haTorah. Just weeks later virtually the entire world was plunged into quarantine, the kol Torah in our battei medrash, yeshivas, schools and shuls was stilled. What a contrast! “This contrast, however,� pointed out Rav Hofstedter, “is not unprecedented. Look at our history. We had mattan Torah, the greatest gilui Shechinah possible and almost immediately thereafter, the terrible sin of the eigel hazahav. We had the climax of kedushah with the chanukas haMishkan followed immediately by the tragic petirah of the tzaddikim, the sons of Aharon; Nadav and Avihu. “Dovid Hamelech was triumphantly bringing the aron back to Yerushalayim when Uzah was killed and the aron taken away. Shlomo Hamelech wanted to consecrate the Bais Hamikdash and the doors of the Bais Hamikdash would not open. “We see,� Rav Dovid observed, “whenever there is an outpouring of gilui Shechinah, revelation of the Divine Presence, the Satan fights with every means at his disposal. Thus, although of course we are terribly distraught over the situation that the world and especially the olam haTorah found itself in due to the pandemic, it shouldn’t come as such a surprise. It is the Satan again trying to neutralize the tremendous Torah accomplishments of Klal Yisroel.� Rav Dovid ended his remarks by telling the lomdim, “It is your learning, your shteiging that is so important to Hashem. You should know that you and the whole olam haTorah are involved in a battle with the Satan! Every blatt Gemara learned and reviewed, every test you take infuses not only you, but the entire Klal Yisroel as well with chizuk! It is our task to continue, to keep on

learning and shteiging until we are zoche to the ultimate gilui Shechinah when the Satan will throw up his hands in defeat, b’meheira b’yameinu!â€? A Milestone of Return “In truth,â€? remarked Rabbi Ahron Gobioff, “I have been simply amazed at how the lomdim maintained their learning despite illness, despite families being cooped up, despite non-optimal learning conditions‌ they forged on! The phones in the Dirshu offices were ringing off the hook as our lomdim sought details about test taking during the corona period and the majority of our lomdim persevered and took the tests at home throughout.â€? The test on Sunday night, however, was a real milestone. A milestone of return. At the Boro Park testing site, it was such a beautiful sight to see Reb Aharon Cohen, a longtime Dirshu learner, come in with his fifteen-year old son, Chaim Eliyahu. “We were both home in quarantine. He was home from yeshiva and I was home from work in lockdown, so we decided to make a daily seder in Dirshu together. We haven’t stopped. We took the tests throughout the lockdowns and now we are coming together to the take the test at the testing site. Not only has our learning improved, but the depth of our relationship with each other has been so enhanced as well. There is nothing more magnificent, nothing more meaningful than a father and son relationship strengthened through mutual limud haTorah, day in and day out,â€? commented, Reb Aharon.â€? Perhaps the words of Reb Yossel Wein, a test taker at the Lakewood site encapsulated the feelings of so many others who finally came together to take a test after all these months. “When we were dancing to the tune of ‘Ashreichem talmidei chachomim’ at the Dirshu testing site, I couldn’t help but think how lucky I am to once again be together with all these talmidei chachomim! There is so much that we have to be thankful for: our health, the health of our family members and most of all that we are able to continue learning Torah! What better place to celebrate this and to thank Hashem profusely than with our like-minded Lomdei Dirshu!â€?

According to the tradition of the Talmud, as expanded upon by Rambam and other scholars, the elders of Israel, the leaders of the tribes were taught the entire Oral Law directly by Moshe as received by him at Mount Sinai. The fact that this portion of the law was taught to the elders of the tribes contains a particularly significant message that is truly relevant to our time in society. Everyone must keep their word. There are no different standards of observance for the leaders of the

Yet we realize that the leaders of the tribes are particularly prone to violate this injunction that demands full commitment and compliance with one’s words and promises. We are all aware of political leaders who, when campaigning for office, make grandiose promises and undertake further proposed policies and agendas. And we are just as aware that when these very same

t has been a long time since we have felt the kind of unity we have seen ever since Eyal, Gilad, and Naftali were kidnapped and murdered over six weeks ago. The subsequent rocket fire on cities all over Eretz Yisroel and the war in Gaza have brought us together so much. Outside of Eretz Yisroel, helpless as we review every scrap of news from Israel, all we can do

is daven and strengthen our learning and mitzvos in the hopes that Hashem will not allow any more of our boys in the IDF, or any of the Yiddin in Eretz Yisroel, be harmed. The upheaval at this time is tremendous. Everything is constantly changing. We are transitioning from one danger to the next. Jewish people in the desert. The Degel Machaneh Ephraim, zy”a, teaches, in the name of his grandfather the Baal Shem Tov, zy”a, that the forty-two journeys of the Jewish people in the desert correspond to the journeys each individual takes in his life. When a person leaves the womb, this corresponds to when the Jewish people left Egypt. When the Jewish people entered Eretz Yisroel, this corresponds to a person’s journey into the land of eternal life after 120 years in this world. How do we retain a sense of equanimity and centeredness when we must transition from one journey to another throughout our lives? Reb Leibele Eiger, zy”a, points out that the word “of them [Bam]” in the pasuk “And you shall speak of them,” has the numerical value of forty-two. The pasuk continues, “And you shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” We must speak of them, words of Torah and emunah, wherever we go and wherever we travel. We can thrive through every test and trial we face if we hold onto truth and faith. If we remain certain in our purpose, then we will succeed despite all of the contradictions and challenges of a world in which many people seem to have taken leave of basic human decency and morality. But the Baal Shem Tov’s teaching about the forty-two travels of the Jewish people does not only apply to people on an individual level. It also speaks to the travails of our nation as a whole as we journey on toward the times of Moshiach.

The Encampments – A Paradox of Opposites We know that the names of our stops during our journey in the desert (Bamidbar 33:5-49) have profound meaning. And as I read through the names of our encampments in the parsha with the upheaval in Eretz Yisroel in mind, I was struck by the contradictions implicit in those names and how they speak to the contradictions of life today, particularly in Eretz Yisroel. On one hand, it says we camped in Miska, from the Hebrew word meaning sweetness. Many aspects of our lives are sweet and we have much to be thankful for. But we also camped in Mara, meaning bitterness. Dozens of our brothers have been killed sanctifying G-d’s name and millions of our brothers, sisters, and friends in Eretz Yisroel are running for bomb shelters multiple times every day. Their lives are in a state of upheaval and they experience bitterness day after day. The Jewish people camped in Har Shafer, meaning “beautiful mountain.” Sometimes we are on top of the world. The view is stunning. But at other times, we camp in Tachas, meaning “low.” When we watch the parents, brothers, sisters, and wives of all of the soldiers killed protecting our people, we feel like we are living at the opening of Geihinom, at the lowest place. We camped at Refidim, which means weakness. Our Torah, mitzvos, and emunah suffer and we often do not do what Hashem expects of us. But we also camped in Midbar Sinai, where we received the Torah, attaining the highest level of prophecy and connection to G-d’s will. Today too, we have seen how even people with

little outward connection to Torah and mitzvos have begun saying Tehillim, lighting Shabbos candles, putting on tefillin, and doing many other mitzvos and acts of kindness in order to merit the salvation of the Jewish people. At one point, the pasuk tells us we camped in Makheilos, meaning, “community” or “congregation.” We were united. And we see how, in the past few weeks, our people have been united more than any other time in the recent past. We are united in prayer and resolve, knowing that our cause is righteous. But at other times, we stop off in a place called Chatzeiros, meaning “courtyards.” Especially when we are not besieged from the outside, every Jewish group separates itself into its own courtyard and unfortunately barely views other Jews as part of the same people. We camped in Sukkos, a place named after temporary, rickety structures. With thousands of rockets falling all over Eretz Yisroel, with tunnels dug under our communities and neighborhoods, we feel vulnerable and frightened. We feel as if our entire existence is dependent on the protection of some flimsy walls and roof which the wind could blow away at any moment, leaving us completely exposed. But at other times, we feel we are camped in Eisam, meaning, strong. We feel grateful for how Hashem has blessed our people with the resolve, ingenuity, resources, and intelligence to build up one of the most powerful militaries in the world in just a short time. We sometimes feel we are encamped by the Red Sea, encircled on all sides by enemies and pushed up against the sea. We feel we have no escape. But at other times, we sense that we are camped in Eilim, where the psukim tell us there were wellsprings, date palms, and where we were able to rest from the weariness of our travels. We enjoy the prosperity and economic success with which Hashem has blessed our people. But at other times, we feel we are camped in Dafka, meaning “stricken” or “beaten.” We feel pressed, hit, and beaten by attacks from all directions, physically, emotionally, and diplomatically. We feel we are under siege wherever we live in the world, whether it is in the U.S., Britain, Paris, Morocco, or anywhere else in the world.

We sometimes feel camped in Rimon Paretz, meaning “break through.” We break through every attempt by our enemies to attack us and put us on the run. But, sadly, too often we are camped in Charada, meaning “trembling.” Our brothers and sisters tremble in fear in their bomb shelters and safe rooms. And now, our enemies are wearing IDF uniforms, so that it

We sometimes feel we are camped in Chashmonah, where we feel as mighty as the Chashmonayim, or in Etzyon Gaver, meaning “effective strategy” and “strength.” At those times, we take pride and comfort in how our military neutralizes our enemies while protecting our soldiers and minimizing the battle’s impact on civilians. But at other times, we feel like we are in Kivros Hata’avah, buried in the

My Hero – Dovid Hamelech, King of Opposites As the events in Eretz Yisroel swirl through my mind all day, every day, my thoughts continually return to the ultimate hero of the Jewish people: Dovid Hamelech. The tzadikim teach that our job at the end of days is to reveal the great soul of Dovid Hamelech, as the pasuk (Hoshea 3:5) says, “And they sought Hashem their G-d and Dovid their king.” In all of his journeys, he seemed to be full of contradictions. The Gemara (Moed Katan 16b) says that “When [Dovid Hamelech] would sit and study Torah, he would be as re-

fined as silk, and when he went out to war, he hardened himself like wood.” Chazal are not teaching us that Dovid suffered from multiple personality disorder. Rather, his personality was so great and all-encompassing that it contained everything within it. He was simultaneously composed of the might of war and the highest and most refined level of ethics and morality. These two extremes complement one another. The more perfection one has attained, the more he includes apparent opposites within himself. That is why Reb Leibele Eiger teaches that the forty-two journeys of the Jewish people in the desert, which seem to contain so many opposites within them, are hinted at in the mitzva of “And you shall speak of them when you sit in your home and when you go on your way…” We must be prepared to cling to the Torah and the certainty of our faith in the midst of the full range of disparate experiences during our travels through this world.

The Illumination Within War Who else but Rav Kook, zy”a, could have written a section in Oros called “Oros Hamilchama, The “Illumination of War?” Rav Kook writes, as translated by Rabbi Betzalel Noar, as follows: We regard the early generations, recounted in Torah, Prophets, and Writings; those generations that were engaged in war – they are great people we cherish and glorify. We understand that the spark of soul is the determining factor: that state of the world that necessitated war caused these souls (whose inner feeling was whole) to appear. The battle for existence, for existence of the nation, the War of G-d, was with an inner consciousness. Mighty in spirit, they knew in the depth of darkness to choose good and eschew evil. Though I go in the valley of the shadow of death I shall fear no evil. When we meditate on them, we, with all the spirituality that we so desire, long for their strength, for the solid life force that dwelled in their midst, and out of this longing our spiritual strength is hardened and our physical strength is softened, and those strong souls return to live in us as ever. Rav Kook is teaching us that we cannot view the strength and might of warriors as somehow alien to our religious, Torah-based life. During our

two-thousand-year exile, we have become accustomed to thinking of a Jew purely as the refined, pale student in the beis medrash. We began thinking that we should only be encamped in Maska, a place of sweetness. We forgot that we must sometimes set up camp in Etzyon Gaver and Rimon Paretz, places of strategy, might, and breaking through all obstacles. Dovid Hamelech and Rav Kook teach us that while there is a time for gentleness and refinement, there is also a time to kiss our Gemaras, place them down, pick up our weapons, and go to battle against the enemies of the Jewish people who seek to destroy us. That is no less a part of Torah and Yiddishkeit than the study of Torah. Indeed, even a simple reading of Tanach reveals that most of it is comprised of how the Jewish people conducted themselves in war. Now is the time in history when we must enclothe ourselves for battle and clean the world of the cockroaches of Hamas and their ilk. The whole world is trembling in fear as radical Islamists populate their countries. They look on helplessly. Right now, our people are the only ones making way for Hashem’s kingship in the world. We are the only ones who have taken it upon ourselves to finally clean the house, ridding the terrorists of their missiles, guns, grenade launchers, and attack tunnels. We are the only ones standing up to the evil of Hamas, which prides itself on its love of death and bloodshed. We are like Dovid Hamelech, “redhaired with beautiful eyes” (Shmuel I 16:12); red like Eisav the warrior with the refinement and elevated spirit reflected in his beautiful eyes. Chazal say (Bereishis Raba 63:8) about Dovid Hamelech, “He killed with the consent of the Sanhedrin.” Even when Dovid Hamelech expressed the warrior aspect of his personality, he did not do so with cruel abandon. He conducted himself in war according to halacha and morality. We also see this in our brave brothers in the IDF. While the enemies of our people stoop to lower and lower depths of cruelty both to our people and their own, the Jewish warriors in Eretz Yisroel never stoop to the level of their degraded enemies. They go above and beyond what any nation has done when defending themselves against the imminent threats we face today. When I see how our nation is rising to the challenge against it with great-

er moral clarity, more davening, more mitzvos, and more resolve to use the truth to fight against the attacks, lies, and propaganda of our enemies, I feel a surge of pride in our nation. In this current conflict, I am filled with love and nachas when I think about the Israeli soldiers, commanders, political leaders, and people. I am proud to be a Jew. One of my children showed me a video of a group of “Nanachers” dancing with Israeli soldiers, many of whom were not wearing yarmulkes, singing “One who has emunah is not afraid...” Indeed, when we hold onto our faith and know with certainty that destroying terrorists who attempt to kill every single Jew as they hide behind their own women and children is G-d’s work, we have nothing to fear.

A True Jewish Military Leader Many people have seen the most inspiring letter which was sent by Colonel Ofer Winter of the Givati Brigade to his reservist soldiers as they were being called up to serve in Gaza. It perfectly captures the Jewish spirit of righteous battle. This is what he wrote: We have been bestowed a great privilege to command and serve in the Givati Brigade at this time. History has chosen us to be on the cutting edge of the war against the terrorist enemy, the “one of Gaza” [cf. Yehoshua 13:3] who curses, reviles, and defames the G-d of the battalions of Israel. [Cf. Dovid’s encounter with Golias, the Plishti, Shmuel I 17:10, 26, 36, 45.] Let us prepare and ready ourselves for this moment when we accept upon ourselves this mission with a sense of agency and complete humility and with a readiness to put ourselves in danger or give up our lives in order to protect our families, our nation, and our birthplace. Let us work with resolve and strength and with initiative, strategy, and hard work in our encounter with the enemy. We will do everything we can to fulfill our mission to cut down the enemy and to remove fear from the people of Israel. Our credo is “We do not return before the mission is done.” Let us work and do everything we can to bring back our boys in peace by utilizing every means at our disposal and with any effort that is required. I am relying on you, on each and every one of you, to do your duty in this spirit, the spirit of Jewish warriors who go out in front of the camp. “The spirit which is called ‘Givati.’” I

lift up my eyes to Heaven and say with you, “Shma Yisrael, Hashem Elokeinu, Hashem Echad.” May Hashem, the G-d of Israel, bring success in our mission in which we stand to do battle for the sake of Your people Israel against the enemy who curses Your Name. In the name of the warriors of the IDF generally, and in particular, in the name of the warriors and commanders of our Brigade, may Hashem act and fulfill in us that which it says in the pasuk, “Hashem your G-d goes out with you to do battle with your enemies for you to save you” [Devarim 20:4], and let us say Amen. “Together, and only together, will we be victorious.”

May we recognize that we must serve G-d in all of the different ways the Torah demands for the vast array of differing life circumstances we encounter in our journeys. And may Hashem take vengeance upon every terrorist snake who has harmed even a single hair on the head of any Jew. May Hashem soon send Moshiach to remove every evil regime from the earth to make way for the great-grandson of the greatest king, Dovid Hamelech, soon in our days.

Think, Feel, Grow

The Power of the Journey By Shmuel Reichman

T

he Torah is not only a guide to living a life of truth within the physical world, it is also the literal blueprint and DNA of this physical world. Our physical world is a projection and emanation of the deep spiritual reality described by the Torah. This is the meaning of the Midrash, “Istaklah b’Oraisah u’barah almah”, Hashem looked into the Torah and used it to create the world. The physical world is an emanation and expression of Torah, the spiritual root of existence. As such, every single word of Torah is of infinite importance. The Rambam, echoing this same idea, explains that if one rejects a single word of the Torah, it is as if he has rejected the entire Torah. The Ramban explains in the introduction to his commentary on Bereishis that the entire Torah is one elongated Shem Hashem, one interconnected sefer, a single organic entity. Just as a single missing chromosome can affect an entire human being, the same is true for a sefer Torah. Even a single missing letter renders the entire text passul. Every single word and letter in the Torah is absolutely fundamental. If this is true, the beginning of Parshas Masei seems troubling. The first forty-nine pesukim in the parsha list, one by one, the various places that the Jewish People passed through along their journey in the Midbar. In the majority of these places, nothing of note occurred; the Jewish People simply passed through. Why is it necessary to men-

tion every single place, every single stage of our journey? The Ramban alludes to the fact that these forty-two encampments contain many hidden secrets, and the Magen Avraham suggests that they represent the forty-two letter name of Hashem. Although we will not go into the depths of these answers, I would like to develop a deep theme related to these encampments, suggesting some inspiring and deep ideas we can learn.

The Importance of Every Step Although we often focus on the end result, every single step of a process is of critical importance.

If we truly understood the power of this idea, our view of time and potential would forever change. Consider, for example, a single day of your life. Your day begins with infinite spiritual potential, with 86,400 seconds to utilize. At the very beginning of every day, you have the ability to learn new ideas, improve your relationships, and achieve countless new accomplishments. After 1000 seconds of your day have passed, whatever you accomplished of that time- of that potential- is real, and the rest is lost. However, the potential for the remaining 85,400 seconds is shaped by how you spent the first 1000 seconds. If you spent them well, taking full

advantage of your time, sharpening your mind and awareness and building positive momentum, then you now have greater access to a higher version of yourself within which to continue building and creating your life. If you thought unempowering thoughts or failed to create a positive trajectory, instead attaching yourself to any number of self-destructive activities, then you have set yourself up for a very difficult journey ahead, perhaps diminishing the quality of potential for the rest of your day. Every thought, word, action, and decision has infinite cosmic reverberations and repercussions. This may be overwhelming to consider, and it may be unhealthy to continuously fixate upon the severity of each infinitesimal aspect of our lives, but the truth remains nonetheless. We should therefore contemplate this as often as we can, as this realization will help awaken us to the importance of everything, something truly crucial to recognize. Every single step in our journey creates ripples throughout every aspect of our lives. This is an example of true oneness, and this is the importance of every step. We can now begin to appreciate why the Torah includes every single step of Klal Yisrael’s journey.

Enjoying the Journey There is a story of a man who wanted to climb a mountain. He calculated that it would take him roughly a month to reach the top, so he bought the supplies, packed the food, and

started his climb. About two weeks into his climb, he saw a helicopter in the distance. As the helicopter got closer, the pilot slowed down, lowered his window, and called out, “Are you okay? Where are you heading?”. The man shouted back “I’m great! I’m climbing this mountain.” Intrigued, the pilot responded, “Really? How long have you been climbing?” “About two weeks,” he replied. “I have about another two weeks to go.” The pilot thought for a second, and had an idea. “Why don’t you hop on board and I’ll fly you to the top. This way you’ll save so much time!” He smiled, shook his head, and explained, “I don’t want to be on the top, I want to climb to the top.” Very often, we want to be perfect. We don’t want to learn, we want to know; we don’t want to exercise, we want to be healthy; we don’t want to build our relationships, we want deep and intimate connection. But the goal of life is not to be perfect or achieve all your goals instantaneously, because you will never be perfect. The goal of life is to become perfect, to endlessly strive for more. You will never arrive at perfection, but you can get closer and closer every day. The goal is not to be on top, it’s to climb a little more every single day. So many people hate the journey of growth because they want nothing more than to be at the destination. The journey of growth is only enjoyable when you learn to enjoy the journey itself. When you fall in love with the process of growth, when you look forward to the daily struggle, to the incremental stages of progress, that is when you find true happiness. In essence, the goal is necessary, but its importance lies only in how it allows you to journey towards greatness. Every goal is only temporary, for whenever you accomplish it, you will almost immediately create a new one. There are even times when we realize that our goal was not even possible or appropriate to begin with, but it still helped us head towards the right direction. The greatest joy does not come from arriving at our goals, but from the journey itself, the striving itself, the process of progress and the continued elevation of our existential self. The Ramban famously quotes the claims of the fools who challenge the pursuit of truth. After all, they claim, if we will never reach absolute truth, as it transcends our limited minds,

what then is the point in pursuing wisdom? Better to not journey at all. The Ramban responds with a profound insight. The goal is not to reach absolute truth, as this is impossible. The goal is to endlessly strive along the winding path towards truth, always getting closer, even without reaching the endpoint. Every single step we take is progress, and this is the goal of life. An endless journey, but one where we enjoy every single stage of growth and evolution. This provides an additional explanation for why the Torah describes Klal Yisrael’s journey in such detail- the

the destination one thought they were heading towards suddenly shifts into something completely unexpected. The same is true in our own lives. Sometimes, only by looking back and putting all the disparate pieces together, do we finally see the beauty and hashgacha (providence) in events that occurred throughout our lives. Any individual moment of your life might may seem meaningless, but held in context of your entire life, this moment suddenly shines with infinite brilliance, as it’s seen as integral and deeply meaningful. This is why the Ba’alei Machshava suggest writing

journey itself is infinitely important. This is why all the places are listed in Parshas Ma’asei. The Jewish People were on a spiritual journey, and every step along the way was essential to that journey. It wasn’t only about arriving at Eretz Yisrael, it was about growing through every step of the journey, every step of the process.

The Personal Megillah A worthwhile journey often includes a long winding path, twisting and turning in all directions, leading you on a seemingly endless quest. Then, at the very last moment, there can be a sudden revelation which retroactively changes your perspective on the entire journey! Like a twist ending in a great story, the last turn can change the way you perceive the entire quest. This is the nature of the final ge’ulah (redemption) When mashiach (messiah) comes, we will suddenly see how all of history was leading us towards our ultimate destination. This is why the end of days is compared to laughter: one laughs when there is a sudden change, and

your own personal “megillah”, keeping an account of events, experiences, and choices that occur throughout your life. Megilas Esther contains no open miracle, but when you put all the pieces of the puzzle together, and read them in order, we see the yad Hashem, how all the seemingly random events fit together so perfectly to create the hidden miracle of Purim. The same is true for our own personal story. Each individual event or experience may seem insignificant and happenstance, but if we put all the pieces together, connecting the dots between the seemingly random events, we begin to see the magic manifest in our own personal megillah. We can suddenly see the turning points in our lives, we retroactively perceive the life-changing decisions and events that, until now, seemed meaningless and random. Whether it was choosing a specific school, meeting a friend or spouse at a specific time, or visiting a certain place when we did, our past becomes a masterpiece ready for us to admire and appreciate. On a larger scale, only by seeing all the various stages

and details of Klal Yisrael’s journey in Parshas Ma’asei could we appreciate the bigger story that was taking place. There is another layer to this idea as well. Very often we set out in life with grand goals and a vivid vision for our future. Many years later, when recalling that vision, we realize that we ended up somewhere drastically different than we had originally intended. This is the beauty of a spiritual journey. We set out with tremendous hishtadlus (effort), hoping that our goals are rooted in the pursuit of a higher truth, a higher purpose. But simultaneously, we must have a deep sense of bitachon (trust) that wherever we end up is the ratzon Hashem. We do not put in a measure of hishtadlus, and a measure of bitachon; we embark with one hundred percent hishtadlus and one hundred percent bitachon as well. In retrospect, we can look back and see how different Hashem’s plans were from our original ones, but in the now, we must devote all our energy into achieving the greatness that we currently believe is our true purpose.

The Journey Towards Greatness We all traverse through the journey of life, trying to grasp the ultimate objective truth as well as fulfill our own personal purpose. As Parshas Ma’asei teaches us, every step of our journey is of ultimate importance. But more important still is the necessity to be a journeyer, to continuously grow through life. We are here to achieve greatness, and living without a higher “why” is not truly living. We are the unique creation of Hashem that has been placed in a confusing and dark world, with the mission of becoming perfect. Find your unique mission, embrace the struggle, and head towards the infinite while enjoying every step of the process.

Gilo: An Expanding Community

owadays, whenever the Israeli government approves a new housing project in a community over the “Green Line,” the event makes international headlines. The latest community placed in the spotlight is Gilo, one of Jerusalem’s seven ring neighborhoods that were developed after the Six Day War. With a population of almost 40,000 residents, the neighborhood has recently received approvals to build 1,100 housing units. The name Gilo is mentioned in Joshua 15:51 and in Samuel 2, 15:12. It is believed that modern Gilo is located on the same site, although some scholars argue that biblical Gilo was farther west in the Chevron hills. Although modern Gilo was officially established in 1971, the land has been inhabited by Jews for over 3,000 years. Archaeologists have unearthed a small settlement characteristic of Iron Age Israelite architecture; discovered a fortress from the period of the First Temple; and have found farms and graves from the Second Temple period. Gilo is situated on a hilltop in southwest Jerusalem west of the Malcha Mall, and was master-planned with large open spaces, shopping centers, 35 synagogues, many schools and kindergartens,

numerous small playgrounds scattered throughout the community, and two large parks: Park Gilo and Park Zeidenberg. Over the past fifteen years, Gilo’s main roads have expanded, offering access to the rest of Jerusalem. Gilo has a mix of many demo-

n 25 June, what was otherwise a normal night in the Iranian capital of Tehran, was suddenly and without warning rudely interrupted. At about midnight local time, a massive explosion was heard throughout the city. To the east, Terhanians saw the sky light up a bright orange as the conflagration caused by the blast began to consume surrounding structures. The following morning, regime-owned media published a report that the explosion was the result of a malfunctioned gas tank in the Parchin state administrative zone located about 40 kilometers east of Tehran. No injuries occurred, but the damage was reportedly quite extensive. Defense Ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Davoud Abdi told reporters that firefighters eventually managed to bring the blaze under control and investigations were under way to determine the cause.

A String of Accidents What residents of Tehran heard and saw that fateful evening was the first in a series of mysterious incidents, all involving damage to sensitive locations in Iran, from military bases to industrial zones to historical sites. The location of the June 25th explosion was in fact a large Iranian military base. In the early 2000’s, allegations were leveled on the Ayatollahs by international media that Ira-

nian technicians at Parchin were testing highly explosive components for a nuclear warhead. At the time, Iran unequivocally denied any nuclear-related activity at the base. “Parchin is a military site where conventional military activities take place,” said then Foriegn Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast. “Comments about cleaning up military nuclear tests are not accurate or wise. This is invalid propaganda.” However, when inspectors from the

On June 30th, an explosion at a medical clinic in the north of the capital was heard at around 9:00pm. The Tehran prosecutor’s office told media sources the cause of the accident was the explosion of three oxygen capsules inside the clinic. But a senior police official said the investigation pointed to a “gas leak”

and “a faulty electrical wire” as the source of the incident. Over the next week and a half, Iran experienced one strange destructive episode after another. A large fire consumed swaths of public gardens in the city of Shiraz on July 3rd. The following morning a power plant in the city of Ahwaz, the capital of Khuzestan, caught fire when a transformer exploded. Later that same day, a chlorine gas leak and fire was reported at the Karun petrochemical center in the southwestern city of Mahshahr. Some seventy workers were reported sickened by the gas and required hospitalization. Three days later on July 7 th, a factory blew up in southern Tehran. According to reports, faulty oxygen canisters were responsible for the blast. Local governor Amin Babaei stated the incident was the result of employee negligence, accusing factory workers of being “careless.”

Connecting the Dots By the time Iran experienced its fourth explosion in the span of a week, observers began to question the regime’s dismissive attitude. The conversation on the string of “accidents” went where all substantive conversation on Iran policy is forced to take place - social media. Today, there are still a few platforms on which Iranians can be frank about the developments in their country. Accusations on the source of fires and explosions have been abound on chat forums and communication apps. Many posters have leveled accusations on the regime itself, some

going so far as to accuse Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) of organized arson against some of the sites. But while some of the locations that have been damaged could potentially be on the Ayatollah’s hit list - such as several religious minority holy sites - most of them could not. Which brings us to one of the more insightful revelations circulated by Iranian web influencers. As many users have pointed out, there are clear signs Iranian authorities have been trying to hide key details of several of the explosions. For instance, almost a week after the June 25th blast east of Tehran, the story broke that on the same night the secret missile site in Khojir also experienced an explosion. It is still unclear if the event at Khojir was in addition to the one reported at Parchin or if state media completely made up the Parchin report to distract from the real location. Be that as it may, there is no question as to why Iran would want to repress news about a possible sabotage incident at the Khojir Missile Production Complex (KMPC). KMPC is almost certainly the most important site for the Ayatollah’s ballistic missile program. The site has largely escaped public scrutiny, but it has always been hiding in plain sight, approximately 40 kilometers from the country’s capital. Satellite imagery confirms that KMPC did in fact sustain severe damage sometime around the 26th of June. Iranian authorities may be able to obfuscate the connection Parchin has to any more-than-conventional military activity. On the other hand, KMPC, is without a doubt an important center of Iran’s cutting-edge military research and development and is closely linked to the nation’s Space Industries Organization. If Iran were to ever produce a viable atomic weapon, it would be the people at Khojir that would provide a missile capable of delivering the warhead. Indeed, the pattern pointing to Iran’s nuclear program becomes all the more apparent when considering the most important in the series of peculiar blasts. opment and assembly plant. The plant is generally recognized as Iran’s central facility for uranium enrichment with slightly under 20,000 gas centrifuges reportedly operating on site. Natanz was a key point of the negotiations surrounding Iran’s nuclear

Daily inspection of the site by the IAEA was part of the nuclear enrichment reduction agreement reached in 2013. The Natanz plant was the target of the infamous Stuxnet attack, a cyber breach orchestrated jointly between American and Israeli intelligence agencies between 2007 and 2010. Needless to say, the Natanz facility is a central location of Iran’s nuclear activity, and everybody knows it. On July 2nd, Natanz became the third site in Iran to be rocked by an explosion in the span of a few days. The Iranians barely attempted to cover up Natanz in the guise of an

According to statements from unnamed intelligence sources gathered by the New York Times, it is estimated the Iranians would need up to two years to return their nuclear program to the place it was before the explosion.

What does this all mean? Many regional observers were concerned that the combination of COVID and annexation would distract Israel from the Iranian threat. While there is no hard evidence yet

that Jerusalem is behind these incidents, developments in Iran over the past several weeks strongly indicate at least some tertiary involvement by both Israel and the United States. If this is in fact the case, it shows that the hardline approach to Iran taken by the Trump administration and Israel - albeit each in its own way - has escalated to a series of short-of-war targeted strikes, aimed at taking out important Iranian assets. The first sign of this policy being put into motion came with the killing of IRGC general Qasem Soleimani earlier this year. That attack however, at least took place outside of the Islamic Republic. These recent ones - if they are all indeed attacks - took place deep inside Iran’s territory. A second element to consider is what the attacks say about Iran’s internal security. Simply put, it is highly unlikely, nearly impossible, for any nation to have carried out these acts of sabotage without inside help. This is not the first sign of western collaborators inside Iran. Two years ago, a Mossad raid of a warehouse in Tehran resulted in the theft and extraction of tens of thousands of nuclear weapons-planning documents. This operation clearly had the assistance of insiders. The recent string of incidents affecting highly sensitive Iranian sites shows there is an extensive network of operatives throughout the country prepared and capable of acting against the regime. Finally, recent events in Iran show the breakdown of the Ayatollah’s intelligence apparatus. As one strange explosion was reported after the other, the prevailing question was, understandably, “whodunit?” But an equally, if not more obvious question was how were these attacks ever carried out successfully? While the Iranians may not be quite on par with the West when it comes to spy catching, they are certainly not fools when it comes to counterintelligence. In the early 2000’s, Iran successfully identified and broke up a CIA network in the country. Iran regularly claims to uncover spies deployed by Israel and other regional countries. In this recent string of attacks, not only did

the IRGC fail to stop the saboteurs, but the regime’s silence over the past week and a half indicates they barely have so much as a lead. The only conclusion is that Iran’s security agencies are not doing well. The most obvious root cause is lack of funding and the result of years of U.S. sanctions coupled with sinking oil prices. Regardless of what underpins the trend, clearly the IRGC is not functioning as well as it needs to be. Which means there is now an opening for Iran’s

enemies to push forward with even bolder clandestine operations. This could trigger a serious shift in the modus operandi of the regime’s domestic adversaries, namely the slew of armed Iranian opposition groups that reject the Islamic Revolution. Seeing that the Ayatollahs are incapable of stopping attacks, organizations ranging from the Iranian Peoples’ Mojahedin to the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan may begin ramping up their activities targeting

the regime. This would in turn force authorities in Tehran to shift focus inward and redeploy assets to reestablish domestic security. There is little doubt that even now, the IRGC is investigating links between the recent sabotage and opposition militias. Of course, at some point Iran will not need ‘evidence’ of Western meddling. If push comes to shove, Iran will lash out at any target it can - American or Israeli - in retaliation for sabotage bombings. While such a

scenario may be an escalation to Tehran’s detriment, not even Iran’s most bitter adversaries are seeking a full scale conflict with the Islamic Republic. Which is why whoever is behind the recent events in the country will want to proceed with caution. The purpose of these targeted attacks was not to make Iran capitulate per se, but rather to lay bare the fundamental weakness of Iran’s position.

Dear Navidaters,

My question may be different than those you usually receive, but I would really appreciate your advice. I see many girls writing about their lack of suggestions, and I wanted to bring up the opposite side. As a mainstream guy from a good family who went to typical schools and yeshivas, I am struggling with the very real problem of too many suggestions. My inbox is flooded with resumes; I have shadchanim and mothers and random people in the street hounding me constantly; and I am more than overwhelmed. At this point, it is so hard to decide who to go out with and how to prioritize in an endless list of seemingly similar girls. On paper, they all sound great. The shadchanim always tell me this girl is “exactly what you’re looking for.” I am grateful to have a lot of suggestions for dates but it is still hard for me. I can either attempt to sort through huge piles of resumes that all seem the same and that every reference describes as “normal, beautiful, smart, fun, and growing” and still be confused or say yes to every person and spend lots of money and time and effort going on dates every night. Either way, I am not doing these girls or myself a favor as I am burned out and exhausted by even the thought of another date. What advice can you offer me? Rebbetzin Faigie Horowitz, M.S. ou seem to be detailing two issues. One is your burnout from the dating scene. The other is the lack of clarity about what exactly you are seeking in a life partner, and the deluge of suggestions. I would suggest taking a timeout for both purposes. Take some time to relax from the barrage of dates and girls to really introspect. Don’t just think about the qualities you are seeking in a potential spouse; consider what you have to offer a young woman in terms of inner qualities and strengths. Give yourself the peace of mind and time to consider your style of dealing with stress and challenge. What qualities would a good potential partner need to have to help you and support you in your response to difficulty? How do you discern whether a young woman has those qualities that will help you develop in a healthy manner? What are your weak points and in what areas would you like to grow? What have you learned about yourself during your dating experiences? Do you have emotional baggage from your life thus far? Taking a good look in the mirror is smart as well as humbling. Since you are mature enough to recognize your dating fatigue, and the fact that your resume is very attractive (and that it’s not because you are necessarily so great that you are getting all these suggestions), take responsibility for your dating opportunities. Don’t be passive. Take the time to tell shadchanim who you are, what you are all about, and what qualities you are looking for. You may also want to consider suggestions only from people who know you personally for a while. Taking personal stock of yourself and cutting down on the number of people from whom you take suggestions will make dating a more productive and manageable process.

Women seem to be lost in a world devoid of good-quality men while men can’t show up at the grocery store without ten more shidduch suggestions being thrown at them from all aisles. This is one of the many problems with the shidduch system. Those who have established this system have (undeliberately) created a world where it is normal for single men and their parents to hoard boxes of resumes of wonderful women to choose from. This inherently creates an aggrandized sense of entitlement in young men who are dating, oftentimes who don’t have much to show for themselves because they don’t need to. This situation makes it more difficult for the men to be able to commit. Why commit to one when the next could potentially be better? The men often harbor an overinflated ego with the knowledge that there will always be someone who surpasses the current one. The next one might be nicer, smarter, prettier, frummer etc... The list goes on... It is a problem that must change, which is why I want to begin with this here, because as a community we must shed light on this crucial issue. As a community we must educate the young singles out there to completely revamp their thought process if truly serious about marriage, rather than just playing the field. My advice for you is to recognize this: The next person you choose to go out with can have the potential to be your bashert. There is a famous story about an older bochur who went to a famous Rav/ Mekubal. The bochur asked why he wasn’t zoche to be married yet, like most of his peers. The Rav responded, “You did meet your bashert, but you passed her up because you thought the next one would be better.” This rings true for many in today’s generation. Rather than the recognition that he should be looking for a good match by actively choosing this wom-

an as his bashert based on her stellar qualities; these men, with endless suggestions, wait for one of these resumes to be a Ms. Perfect planted at the door along with a bas-kol at no additional charge. Newsflash: That just does not happen. If it does happen, I am worried for you because it is likely infatuation. Infatuation quickly fades if the relationship is not based on the very sturdy ground of commonality, respect, compatibility, care and trust. Be very careful not to fall for the false narrative that if you choose to marry an amazing woman whom you respect and care for, with whom you are clearly compatible, you might be doomed if you do not know 100%. You can actively choose your bashert and make her your 100% - you are in the driver’s seat of your happiness here. You can either dwell on the not-soperfect while being blind to your own flaws, leading you from date to date; from girl to girl, with no end in sight. Or, you can focus on the one in front of you, the one you decide to date. If you, together with a like-minded woman who also respects and cherishes you, get to a good place together, do not dwell on what-if’s while staring at your endless abyss of other resumes. You can feel confident moving forward to take the leap of faith together. Stop looking for signs from above to lead you to certainty; the signs are here on earth. If you have found a connection with someone good for you, go for it, and leave the connection of your souls to G-d - whom, if you chose this woman for the right reasons, will undoubtedly take it from there.

you are feeling with your level of bombardment. Also, while your question may not be typical, it is an extremely important one that must be asked and answered for both men and women. Thank you for being brave enough to do it and perhaps dodge some rotten tomatoes along the way. The burnout you discuss is extremely real. Shkoyach for recognizing that you are at that point and trying to find a way to change it up. I experienced this myself as I would say yes to guys who were not shayach for me. The best way to deal with burnout is to pause. Think. Acknowledge what is burning you out and put a system in place to prevent that from happening in the future. For you, it is the overwhelming amount of suggestions from everyone and anyone. You need a serious vetting system in place. Take some time to think about and answer the following questions: What do you need in a wife? What type of girls have and have not worked for you in the past? What is a blatant no for you? Once you have this information gathered, use it to help guide you when doing research. Use her resume and photo as a preliminary screening. For example, if it drives you nuts when girls do not use proper grammar or spelling in their resumes, then toss all the ones with those errors in the garbage. Have specific questions that you can

ask references to see if the traits you need or need to avoid exist. For example, if you cannot go out with a girl who is socially off then flat out ask the reference, “Is she socially off?” If you do not want this burden on your shoulders, find a trusted friend, parent, or mentor who truly understands what you need and have them go through the resumes for you. I cannot stress the importance of being 100% confident that this person is on your team and gets you and what you need. The wrong person in this position can be very harmful. Statistically, “in the Orthodox dating pool, there are 12 percent more available women than men (Date-Onomics, by Jon Birger).” A friend remarked that orthodox young men need a secretary and gatekeeper, while orthodox young women need a press agent and public relations firm. Here are my suggestions: You might wish to attend Rabbinically-supervised social events, where young men and women meet on their own, rather than through recommendations. However, I understand that these events are not accepted in many religious circles. As an alternative, I suggest that you pick one person, and only one person, that you trust completely. It should be someone who “gets you,” understands your likes and dislikes, and recognizes your particular goals and aspirations. This person could be your mother or a trustworthy shadchan.

In shidduchim, women are lost in a desert, while men are lost in a forest. Women seem to be lost in a world devoid of good quality men while men can’t show up at the grocery store without ten more shidduch suggestions being thrown at them from all aisles.

If one is being offered one hundred flavors of delicious ice cream, a few outcomes may occur: 1. The person immediately knows he’s going for his favorite flavor, cookie dough. He will choose the cookie dough every time because he loves cookie dough and is truly content with the flavor. 2. He will want to taste a few flavors before he ultimately chooses his ice cream cone. 3. He will stand at the counter for too long, ruminating, unable to choose, and missing the whole ice cream experience. Take the sage advice the panelists have offered and deeply introspect. Think about what you want. Everyone is “wonderful” on paper. What are you looking for? What is important to you? Since you are getting suggestion from every Tom, Dick and Harry, you have the luxury of not accepting resumes from peripheral people in your life who do not know you well. invited the overwhelming a m o u nt of resumes into you r l i fe , because let’s face it... it feels good to be wanted and in such high demand. How would you feel limiting the resumes coming in? What would come up for you internally? Notice whatever that feeling is. For some it might be worry that the right one will get away (nerves, anxiety!) For some it might be the loss of the pleasure and almost addictive like euphoria that the onslaught of resumes bring. For some, it might be sheer relief. This is a huge problem that exists within shidduchim, as other panelists so wisely and eloquently explained. I can’t even begin to explain the amount of incredible (and I mean that!) single women I have had the joy of working with over the years. Women who believe there is something wrong with them because they aren’t married and have a hard time getting dates. One of the main focuses of the work is not giving into the belief that there must be something wrong with them. There is something wrong with the shidduch system. It is a system that puts men and their families up on a pedestal while discarding women and theirs. It makes no sense to me other than it being a reflection of some antiquated patriarchal ideas that don’t serve anyone well. How does this change? If a young man had fifty beautiful girls ready to date him, OF COURSE he is going to have a hard time choosing. We cannot deny human nature. And the women will try to be more and more

concluded. So there it was. Eight difficult years at this job and now it may be over. Michael is really mad now. He is fussing and fuming. He is ready to start yelling - which would be an automatic prelude to a rapid exit out the door. He holds himself in check and storms out the front door, walking around the huge city block to burn off steam.

hose idiots,” Michael thought. “Can’t they see that they’re making a huge

mistake?” Just then his boss, Jim, came in. “Michael, can you explain what exactly happened between you and the engineering team? Three people came to me and complained separately.” “Sure,” Michael smiled at Jim, happy to finally have someone who would listen. “They are entrenched in old ways of doing things that are going to cost the company hundreds of thousands of dollars unnecessarily. They are just plain block-headed! They have a piece of cement between their ears, and very frankly, it drives me crazy.” Are you like Michael, thinking everyone is just stupid and you are the only one that is smart? And because of it, you are fed up with most people who you see as bumbling idiots? Here’s where that assessment leaves Michael: Alone - because he is so superior in his own mind that there aren’t too many people left that he can respect and admire. Deprived of knowledge - because in thinking that only he has all the answers, he may never have the opportunity to discover that there’s a better answer; he has closed himself off to information that he didn’t come up with himself. Unhappy - because human beings were made to connect with others and when we cut ourselves off from others and find ourselves alone,

we are not happy. Many loners will say they’re happy, but that is not the case. The truth is that often they’re unable to get along with others due to their own mental block, so it’s quite painful. Compared to that, being alone is a relief. But a relief is not the same as happy. Not heard - because no one listens to someone who scorns them. If he’s married, he’s potentially heading for divorce - because people who think this way make no exceptions, even for the person they’re supposed to love. If he has kids, they often will become estranged from him - because as they grow and formulate their own view of the world, they will be intolerable of Michael. Angry – because generally the worst part of the whole problem is that people like Michael are perpetu-

ally angry at everyone else because no one is “fit” to be their friend; no one is good enough or cool enough or smart enough. They’re angry at themselves if they look closely enough at themselves to take responsibility for their own mindset. But in any case, they are angry at the rest of humanity. As much as Michael knows it is not helpful to his job to scowl as he speaks of the guys on the engineering team, he can’t help it. His well-taken points are totally lost on Jim who simply does not like his attitude. “Michael, I find it hard to attend to what you’re saying when you’re putting down three people who have been with the company for twentysome years a piece. You may have some well-taken points, but your superior attitude is getting in the way,” Jim told him. “I need to see a change of attitude. Pronto. I’m serious,” he

Anger isn’t a bad thing - as long as you know how to use it to make a point rather than IT taking control of you. That’s the key. See, the feeling of anger is often quite justified in the workplace. But the expression of anger in a hostile and condescending way is not. Michael needs to learn how to accept his anger without making others feel small. When he puts people down, suddenly the whole reason for the problem is swept aside and his nasty behavior becomes the problem. When Michael learns the elegant difference between expressing anger in a derogatory way versus expressing it constructively, he will experience radical changes in his life: • People will listen to him. • People will like him. • People will want to be around him. • He won’t be lonely any more • Even though he feels superior, he will now enjoy the company of others. • He will be happier. • Oddly enough, he will become open to hearing what others say

because he realizes he needs to hear other’s opinions in order to get heard himself. You can see how this has big ramifications if he’s married and if has kids. It is really the difference between a satisfying, meaningful life and an empty, miserable one. So how does he go from point A (antagonizing everyone) to point B (expressing anger constructively)? It’s all about both physiology and mental state. There are two approaches to helping people change their automatic reactions: a bottom up approach and a top-down approach. The bottom up approach means that we help the body to react differently and the top down approach is we help a person change their way of thinking - their cognition. Both work with anger, but the best and most powerful way to get the change you want is a combination of both. Physiology, the bottom up approach, can be changed with properly employed meditation, visualization, and EMDR (eye movement repro-

cessing and desensitization). The reason these work so well is because the neurotransmitters that we hear so much about such as serotonin are manufactured not in the brain, but the adrenals. Our body is the “first re-

The mental state approach, top down, uses cognitive behavioral tools to help us see things from a broader perspective and a new angle. Once you see things differently, you can never go back to the more limited ver-

What do you say to that? Well, the person who spoke sharply and all of us reading the story have now got a much bigger perspective on the problem. The art of a top down approach is to shake up Michael’s perspective on himself, his justified anger, where it started, and how it affects people. It can’t be done as a lecture. That won’t work. It needs to be handled skillfully to help him “see” differently. Research shows that a combo of both top down and bottom up is quite powerful with anger. Pick Your Produce By Aliza Beer MS, RD, CDN

T

here are numerous reasons to love the summer months, but one of my favorites is the abundance of fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables. All year long I encourage my clients to snack mostly on fruit, but summertime it actually feels like a real treat and not something we have to do to stay healthy. I consistently recommend every meal include some kind of veggies, but this time of year the options are even more exciting. Fruits and vegetables contain many vitamins and antioxidants that will keep us healthy, boost our immunity, and help prevent disease. They are also high in fiber, which is essential for gut health. Fiber will also keep you feeling fuller longer, preventing unnecessary snacking or overeating. Additionally, fiber slows the rise of your blood sugar when it is part of a meal. Lastly, the produce contains water, which is very much needed in these warmer months to keep us hydrated. Here are my top ten favorite summer fruits and veggies and why you should take advantage of them this season.

Watermelon: What’s summer without a juicy wedge of watermelon? It’s also jampacked with antioxidants like vitamin C, beta-carotene, and lycopene. Lycopene may help protect against certain cancers and heart disease. Since it is also high in water (about 91%!) it is a great addition to a prefast meal.

Berries: Just like salmon is the “King

of the fish,” berries are the true queens of the fruit. They are low calorie, high fiber, and full of vitamin C, flavonoids, potassium, and folate. Blueberries are the best of the bunch, and are loaded with anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that fight cell damage and reduce inflammation. Some research suggests that these berries bolster brain function as well. Tip: freeze fresh berries now in the summer when they are at their peak and use them all year long in smoothies, pancakes, and as toppings for your Greek yogurt or oatmeal.

Cherries: Another summer favorite that contains only 87 calories per cup, and 306 mg of potassium, a blood-pres-

sure lowering mineral that most people are not meeting the recommended daily intake of 4700 mg. Cherries are also an excellent source of anthocyanins, vitamin C, flavonoids, and fiber. Phytochemicals in cherries have been shown to lower inflammation in the body.

Lychees: They made this list simply because I love them. They are not high in fiber, but contain a significant amount of vitamin C, copper, and potassium. The proanthocyanins present in lychees are known to have strong antiviral capabilities. Lycheetannin A2, a component of lychee, may help in preventing the spread of viruses! The skin of the lychee needs to be peeled in order to get to the flesh

of the fruit. This makes for an activity and slows down the eating process. I find that the slower one eats a meal or snack, the less one ends up eating in the long run.

Peaches and Nectarines: These fruits are at their peak in July and August. Peaches and nectarines are part of the category called stone fruits and are high in fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and beta carotene. They are great eaten raw but are absolutely delicious grilled!

Zucchini: You can eat this rockstar veggie all year long, but it’s best from July until September. Zucchini is one of the lowest calorie vegetables out there, in addition to being high in fi-

It has very low carbs but makes a great carb substitute, like “zoodles.” It’s very versatile and can be great as a soup, or grilled for a side dish at your BBQ, or cut them into chips and “fry” them in an air fryer for a low-calorie snack.

Eggplant: This is technically a fruit not a veggie. Eggplant is best from July until October. It is low in calories and high in fiber, vitamins C and B6, iron, magnesium, and those antioxidant anthocyanins that give the skin its purple color. Eggplant is so sturdy and satisfying that it can behave as a main dish like eggplant parmigiana. Use it to make a no-carb homemade pizza: take eggplant slices and put marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese on them, sprinkle on some oregano and bake in the oven.

Bell Peppers: All bell peppers are loaded with antioxidants, especially vitamin C. Red peppers (my favorite!) lead the pack with nearly three times the amount of vitamin C found in orang-

Everyone should be consuming at least 2 -4 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. I love to snack on fruit and will never eat a meal sans vegetables. Although there is no such thing as a “bad” fruit or veggie, too much of anything, even something super healthy, can be detrimental. For example, a diabetic should be careful with bananas since they spike the blood sugar quickly, and nursing mothers should limit cruciferous vegetables since they may cause a colicky baby. This is the best time of the whole year for produce, so take advantage of it, and more importantly, enjoy them and stay healthy!

Leora Nachman’s Pizza Bourekas By Naomi Nachman

M

y daughter, Leora Nachman, just released a cooking video on Kosher.com in which she demonstrates how to make pizza bourekas (make sure to watch it!). These are perfect for the upcoming Nine Days and it’s also a fun cooking activity to do with the kids. Yield: 8 bourekas Ingredients 8 squares puff pastry, defrosted ¼ cup marinara sauce or pizza sauce of your choice 1/3 cup shredded cheese 1 tbsp. dried basil 1 egg, beaten Sesame seeds for sprinkling

Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 375. Lay your puff pastry squares on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper. 2. Spoon a small amount of marinara sauce on one corner of each puff pastry square, leaving room at the edges for the bourekas to seal properly.

3. Sprinkle cheese on the sauce, then sprinkle lightly with dried basil. 4. Fold the opposite corner over the filled side, creating a triangle shape. Use a fork to seal the edges. 5. With a pastry brush, brush beaten egg on the bourekas, then sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

Trump Confirms U.S. Cyber Attack on Russia By Marc A. Thiessen

D

uring an Oval Office interview with me last week, President Donald Trump acknowledged for the first time that, in 2018, he authorized a covert cyberattack against Russia’s Internet Research Agency, the St. Petersburg-based troll farm that spearheaded Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and was doing the same in the 2018 midterm elections. Asked whether he had launched the attack, Trump replied: “Correct.” Trump said that, in 2016, President Barack Obama “knew before the election that Russia was playing around.” Or, he was told. Whether or not it was so or not, who knows? And he said nothing. And the reason he said nothing was that he didn’t want to touch it because he thought Hillary Clinton was winning because he read phony polls. So, he thought she was going to win. And we had the silent majority that said, ‘No, we like Trump.’” Unlike Obama, Trump says, he acted on the intelligence he was given about Russia’s election interference by striking its cyber capabilities. “Look, we stopped it,” the president said. The cyberattack was previously reported in The Washington Post, but Trump had never officially confirmed it until now. Senior U.S. officials also confirmed for me that the strike occurred and was effective, taking the Internet Research Agency offline. Trump had elevated U.S. Cyber Command to the status of a unified command in 2017 and gave it new au-

thorities to conduct offensive cyber operations in 2018. The cyberattack appears to have been the first that was designed to frustrate Moscow’s attempts to interfere with a U.S. election. Russian interference in the 2018 midterm elections was serious and pervasive. In February 2018, then-Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee that “the United States is under attack,” and that Russia had been emboldened in 2018

During our interview, Trump said the cyberattack was part of a broader policy of confronting Russia throughout the world. “Nobody has been tougher on Russia than I have,” he said. The president offered a litany of actions he has taken to counteract Russia. “I could give you 30 different things,” he said. “I sent [Ukraine] a massive number of antitank busters. I sent them military equipment and

We now have the newest military we’ve ever had. … That’s not good for Russia either. You understand?” Talking about his efforts to counter Russia, the president also pointed to his success in persuading NATO members to increase their contributions to the transatlantic alliance. “I raised $140 billion from NATO countries going up to $400 billion [over three years], and what’s the purpose of NATO? Russia.” The president told me that, despite earlier threats, he doesn’t really want to exit NATO, “but I want them to pay their fair share.” Trump said that even though “every week, we put more sanctions on Russia,” he and Russian President Vladimir Putin “actually have a very good relationship.” The two leaders are “trying to work out a nuclear arms treaty that’s going to be a significant one. … There is no more important thing that we can do than nuclear arms control.” In sum, Trump said, “I love the country, and so, despite all of the things I have to do, I just feel I have to do it right.” Here is something he did right. Shimon Avidan, First Commander of the Givati Brigade By Avi Heiligman

W

hen the State of Israel was established in May 1948, Arab countries immediately invaded. In actuality, the fighting of the Israeli War of Independence had been going on since the previous November with paramilitary groups from the Yishuv fighting against Arabs living in the British Mandate. These paramilitary groups included the Palmach from which its members formed the backbone of the IDF when it was established in late May.

One unit that was involved in heavy fighting before and after the IDF was established was the Givati Brigade led by Shimon Avidan. Sigbert Simon Koch was born in Germany in 1911 and later changed his name to Shimon Avidan. In his youth he participated in undercover activities to combat the rising Nazi Party. In 1932 the Nazis threatened his life and he was forced to flee. He first went to his sister in Berlin who then financed a trip to France. Af-

ter two years on the run he made it to Eretz Yisrael. Together with his brother Uri, they joined a kibbutz in the Upper Galilee. It was there that he started his military career and he joined the Special Night Squad started by British officer Orde Charles Wingate. Before the start of WWII, Avidan fought with the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. The Palmach was established in 1941 as the elite fighting unit of the

Haganah. Avidan was one of their first recruits and soon was one of their senior officers. Yitzchak Sadeh, the man who recruited Avidan, asked him to create a commando unit of German and Yiddish speaking Palmach members whose job it would be to collect intelligence and to carry out guerrilla operations if the Germans were to invade Eretz Yisrael. This mission was deemed unnecessary once the British Eighth Army defeated Rommel’s Afrika Korps at the Battle of El Alamein in 1942. Avidan and his men then changed their area of operations to Europe. One of the platoon commanders in Avidan’s company was future Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin. There they helped refugees reach Eretz Yisrael and at the end of the war established a group of operatives to “neutralize” Nazi criminals. The Palmach soon appointed Avidan as the commander of the 4th Battalion, but as the war was winding down, he was released from active duty and went back to the kibbutz. Two years later, he was back with the Palmach as they prepared for war with their Arab neighbors. The Givati Brigade was established and Avidan was appointed the commander. The name Givati had been Avidan’s alias while he was working for the underground. During the Israeli War of Independence, the Givati Brigade was stationed in central Israel and was involved in several battles. Local Arab militants had blocked the road

roadblock which led to more fighting later during the war. This fighting centered on Latrun, but the Givati along with three other brigades were unable to stop the Jordanians from capturing the Old City. The Egyptians had been attacking convoys on the road from Yerushalayim to Chevron and Be’er

Shimon Avidan to Yerushalayim and ambushed a convoy that tried resupplying the Jewish population of the city. Operation Nachshon was launched in April 1948, and David Ben Gurion appointed Avidan and his brigade to lead a force of 1,500 soldiers to break through the blockade. The mission was a success as the brigade captured several Arab villages and killed the enemy commander. Supplies were able to get through, but soon the Arabs established another

hand-to-hand combat. On October 19, the Givati Brigade moved to attack the Huleiqat defense system. It was another bitter fight that killed 100 Egyptian soldiers. Early in the morning on October 21, the Givati and the 8th Armored Brigades opened the attack. Some units were placed on outlaying roads

to prevent reinforcements while other units shelled enemy positions. There was a divisionary action in the direction of Chevron and other units went into Be’er Sheva. After five hours of fierce fighting, the garrison of 500 Egyptians surrendered to the IDF. There were actually only 60 Israeli soldiers sent into the city itself

but they had a self-propelled gun that caused the enemy to panic and finally give up. After the war, Avidan was the head of operations for the general staff but retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1949 after a dispute with Ben Gurion. In the 1970s he was appointed as comptroller for the Defense Ministry which was under Shimon Peres. Shimon Avidan died in 1994 at the age of 83, and streets in Be’er Sheva and Rishon L’Tzion were named in his honor. The Givati Brigade was soon put into reserve and was reactivated in 1982. Many of the soldiers and units that were active before and during the 1948 War are by and large forgotten. Soldiers like Avidan and those in the ranks of the Givati Brigade are heroes in their own right for their sacrifice and dedication when the odds were not in their favor.

oronavirus has millions of Americans rethinking where they choose to live, especially crowded cities. Back in February and March, New Yorkers led the charge, fleeing the petri dish that Manhattan had become to vacation homes in places like the Hamptons and Martha’s Vineyard. Silicon Valley tech-bros are gazing longingly across the Pacific to New Zealand. Few of the urban expats have returned, and many are surprised to find they prefer the pace and community of rural life to waiting hours for a table at the newest seeand-be-seen bistro or club. But where to settle for good? If you’re on Team Tropical, you should know that Hawaii County, encompassing the entire “Big Island” of Hawaii, is giving mainlanders even more incentive to make the island paradise their full-time home. While the county just raised tax on vacation and investment properties to $11.10 per $1,000 of taxable value up to $2 million, plus $13.60 per $1,000 above that amount, full-time residents will pay just $6.15 per $1,000, no matter how much their homes are worth. If you ever really “needed” an excuse to call Hawaii home, could this be it? Property tax on a million-dollar home averages $10,800 in the United States. But Hawaii has the lowest average property tax rate in the country, and the bill on that same million-dollar home would cost you just $2,880 in Honolulu County. Now imagine shelling out $23,580 on the same million-dollar home in Essex County, New Jersey — without the gentle breezes, perfect beaches, or ‘illima papa bushes with their beautiful yellow flowers! Unfortunately, while Hawaii has the lowest property tax rate, it also has the highest property values. According to Zillow.com, Hawaii’s median home value is $636,541. (If you’re looking for more affordable digs, con-
