Sam Koplowicz 2024 Festival Chair It is once again my pleasure to welcome you to this year’s Edmonton Jewish Film Festival, our 2025 showcase of some of the best recent Jewish-themed films from around the world. This festival results from many months of careful deliberations by a committed group of local movie enthusiasts. The long list of roughly 60 potential titles gradually decreases to the six features that you will watch. I wish we could show more films (many excellent ones exist), but our resources restrict us. As always, I am sincerely grateful for the enthusiasm and active engagement of our intrepid selection committee and for all our supporters: the sponsors, the advertisers, and above all, the participants who attend either in-person or online. And of course, a big thank you to all the Federation staff, who do so much to make the festival happen. This year we are continuing our hybrid format with four live, in-person screenings, plus two online-only offerings. We will hold all events at the charming and comfortable Capitol Theatre in Fort Edmonton Park, with the ever-popular sponsors’ reception on opening night at the heritage Selkirk Hotel next door. I hope to see you there.
We have included several absorbing and relevant short subjects in this year’s program, available online for the duration of the festival. Please take the time to view them. Also, don’t miss the additional special events we’ve added to the schedule, such as the visit to the H.B. Klein Jewelry Store next to the Capitol Theatre on Tuesday, May 13, before the film screening. I am really pleased with the range of films from this year. There is one documentary, the uplifting account of Matisyahu’s journey of emotional discovery and healing in the aftermath of the events of October 7, 2023, and five narrative films representing a diverse variety of countries of origin and a range of historical and contemporary stories and genres. From Israel to Algeria, from Helsinki to New York, these compelling narratives will cause you to laugh and cry, and hopefully give you something to feel, think and talk about. Enjoy!

MESSAGE FROM
Erin Wright P2G Chair Partnership2Gether (P2G) serves as the single most visible connection that our community has with Israel. It is a partnership between a consortium of smaller Jewish communities in Canada and the Etzbah HaGalil. The partnership’s mission has three major components: 1) To create a ‘Living Bridge’ (Gesher Chai) between the people of the Israeli and Canadian communities, 2) To support youth and education in the region, and 3) To support capacity building in the region. The last 19 months have had a devastating impact on our partner communities. The evacuation forced three municipalities to live dispersed in hotels nationwide. Two could remain in place but they too felt the effects, physical risk and anxiety, of the unceasing barrage from Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Our partner communities, including the largest municipality in our partner region, Kiryat Shemona, recently received approval to return home. This past March, we sent a mission to take part in our regular partnership meetings. Besides myself, Stacey Leavitt-Wright, and Steve Shafir represented our community along with Noga Vaisblat, president of the Talmud Torah Society. In the north, we were among the first to visit Metula and witness first-hand the devastation to the town. We also could meet with teens from Kfar Blum and hear their challenges during the war, as well as their stories of resilience, courage, and their commitment to returning to rebuild. Our experiences were at once sobering and inspiring, best epitomized by their current motto, ‘Build Back Better’.
On another positive note, we welcomed 10 Grade 8–9 students and three chaperones from Metula to Alberta last summer. They visited Camp BB Riback and Calgary (they were supposed to visit Edmonton as well, but last-minute flight changes by the airline prevented this). These experiences gave the teens some respite from the ongoing bombardment and displacement and the impact on their mental health. This partnership speaks to the strong collaboration of the Calgary and Edmonton Jewish Federations, Camp BB, and the Jewish Agency for Israel and would not have been possible without the unwavering and generous support of the Edmonton Jewish Film Festival (EJFF). For the coming year we hope to use the proceeds of the EJFF to further the Gesher Chai component of our partnership, ensuring continued and deepened connections between our community and Israelis in our partner region. Finally, I want to formally acknowledge, with great appreciation, the Edmonton Jewish Film Festival, its sponsors, advertisers, and donors for their continued support of the P2G initiative. The proceeds of this rich cultural event continue to assist projects within our partnership region and the reinvigorated Gesher Chai activities.

The original Capitol Theatre building opened in downtown Edmonton in 1918, the first purpose-built movie theatre in the city. From the very beginning, it was filled with Yiddishkeit. It was built by Jewish entrepreneurs Jules and Jay Allen, as part of their nation-wide theatre empire. The same year the theatre opened, the building’s other tenant moved in. Herman B. Kline, a Jewish immigrant who came to Edmonton from Alsace, via Montreal, opened a small jewelry store, that sold everything from watches to china, from spectacles to glass eyes. It was the very shop where my own grandparents, of blessed memory, Sam Simovitch and Rose Hardin, got their wedding rings and their marriage licence. How magical and how apt it is, that the rebuilt Capitol Theatre building in Fort Edmonton should now play host to the Jewish Film Festival. It is indeed the ideal venue to tell Jewish stories. Mazel tov to everyone at the festival for creating another fantastic event to enrich our city’s cultural life. May there be many many stories yet to tell.

Song of Ascent depicts Matisyahu’s most recent US tour bookended by two meaningful trips to Israel, and follows his experience at several Kibbutzim, the Nova Festival site, hospitals, and other locations essential to bearing witness to the October 7 massacres.
