WELCOME Dear Friends, Thank you for joining us for our very first Just For Show fundraising event and supporting the diverse mental health and social services that Jewish Family Service provides to anyone in need. Tonight, we will visit with friends and community leaders, laugh with the hilarious Sebastian Maniscalco, say a formal farewell to longtime JFS CEO, Michael Fleisher, and make a meaningful difference for those whose lives are touched by JFS. For 66 years, JFS has continued to meet the evolving needs of the community by developing comprehensive services for all who reach out to us for assistance. This includes diagnostic testing and play therapy for children; counseling for at-risk teens; individual, marital and family therapy; family violence intervention; job search resources; emergency assistance; food pantry; and older adult services. In just the past few years, our breadth and depth has expanded with the addition of a financial coaching program, a licensed chemical dependency counselor, targeted emotional support for individuals with early dementia, and PLAN (counseling, educational and social programming for adults with chronic mental illness). As “An Open Door to All in Need,” our fee scale, which can slide to $0 when necessary, coupled with our ability to provide confidential services for as long as needed, make us inclusive and accessible. National accreditation by the Council on Accreditation and successful service outcomes underscore the quality of our efficient and effective “one stop shop of coordinated care” in addressing the wide variety of life’s challenges. RON CORNING Emcee
Ron Corning has enjoyed a long and successful career as a television journalist, first starting as a general assignment reporter and weekend anchor in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Corning's first foray into a major market was at Fox affiliate KTVI in St. Louis, Missouri, where he won an Emmy Award for Live Spot News Coverage in 1997 before joining Fox affiliate KCPQ in Seattle, Washington. Corning entered the national arena as a news anchor on the CW's syndicated morning talk show, The Daily Buzz from 2002 to 2004. In 2004 Corning went on to co-anchor the ABC overnight news program World News Now and ABC's World News This Morning and was a correspondent for Good Morning America. In the New York market, Corning has co-anchored mornings and evening newscasts with former Weekend Today Show anchor Jodi Applegate. Corning was drawn to WFAA because of its reputation in Dallas and nationwide as the gold standard in television journalism. Ron was born and raised in Eastern Maine where his family still lives. Ron graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts in 1993 with a B.A. in history and religion. You can follow Ron daily on social media @roncorning.
THE MAJESTIC THEATRE The Majestic Theatre opened its doors on April 21, 1921 as a vaudeville theatre. It was built by impresario Karl Hoblitzelle and designed by John Eberson, one of the foremost designers of theatres in the early 20th Century. Hoblitzelle’s Interstate Amusement Company built and operated vaudeville theatres in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas. As the vaudeville era came to an end in the 1930s, Hoblitzelle began to present movies in his theatres. The Majestic hosted film premieres with big stars in attendance, including Jimmy Stewart, Gregory Peck, John Wayne, Audy Murphy and many others. The Majestic screened its last film in 1973 and the theater went dark. The Hoblitzelle Foundation gifted the Majestic to the City of Dallas in January 1976. After major restoration, the Theatre reopened on January 28, 1983 as a performing arts venue. Currently used by national promoters to present performing arts events, concerts and comedy shows, the Theatre is also available for corporate meetings, nonprofit fundraisers and private functions. The Majestic Theatre is managed by the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs. 8
Saying what we’re all thinking has always been Sebastian Maniscalco’s specialty. Except when he says it, it’s a whole lot funnier, and that has fans across North America showing up in droves for his shows and millions tuning in for his network specials. After more than a dozen sold-out performances in New York City’s comedy circuit in the last year alone, the Chicago-born-and-bred turned Los Angeles native tapped Manhattan as the backdrop for his newest comedy special on Showtime, SEBASTIAN MANISCALCO: WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? This highly-anticipated new hour of skepticism follows up Sebastian’s 2014 Showtime standup special and DVD “Aren't You Embarrassed?” in which he offered up his witheringly sarcastic and exasperated take on modern behavior and etiquette. Sebastian grew up in the middle class suburbs of Chicago (“The world doesn’t match my upbringing”), prides himself on a work ethic his father instilled in him when he began working at the age of eight, as an altar boy at funerals during his lunch break to contribute to the family. He still sports his Chicago accent despite leaving the Windy City in 1998 to follow his dream in Los Angeles. Sebastian began paying his comedy dues by night playing his brand of comedy in bars and bowling alleys while working as a waiter at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. He eventually broke into the national spotlight with a 20-city tour in support of his one-hour Comedy Central DVD special. Yet, it wasn’t until Sebastian captured the attention of award-winning actor and entertainer Vince Vaughn, who selected him to be one of four featured comedians in the critically acclaimed film “Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Show,” that his comedy career began to explode. Since then, the 2016 Just for Laughs Stand Up Comedian of the Year and 2014 American Comedy Award nominee for Best Club Comedian has established an avid fan following via national late night television appearances and an appearance in Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” 2016 through 2017 will also find Sebastian making his move to the big screen with several major motion picture appearances, including a voice-over role in the animated feature "Nut Job 2," a New Line feature comedy "The House" starring Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler (directed by Andrew Cohen), and the independent drama "Cruise" directed by Rob Siegel and produced by Jeremy Renner.

FAREWELL TO CEO MICHAEL FLEISHER After 23 years at the helm of Jewish Family Service, the time has come to bid farewell to our highly regarded CEO, Michael Fleisher. He has been the stalwart leader of JFS during a time when Dallas and its suburbs have experienced an explosive population boom, calling for a strong mental health and social service agency to tend to its needs. His steady leadership at JFS has paved the way for his successor, Steve Banta, to lead JFS to even greater heights. Michael began his career at Jewish Family Service in Cleveland. He worked there for 14 years, rising through the ranks from counselor to assistant executive director. To the credit of the many strong leaders of JFS who preceded Michael’s tenure, the agency was poised for growth and progress when Michael joined Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas in 1994. When he began in Dallas, JFS was located in rented space near Coit and Alpha. The food pantry was in the basement of the Federation building and there was another small office handling Russian resettlement. Michael’s first responsibilities were to review the Russian resettlement process and to develop relationships with the Jewish day schools in the area of support services. He was then asked by different community members to address domestic violence and the AIDS epidemic. This initiated the agency’s additional objectives of responding to unmet community needs and maintaining confidentiality throughout all services. Most people who know Michael consider a key to his accomplishments is his keen ability to acknowledge the role of good professionals. He emphasizes what distinguishes JFS from other agencies is its continuum of care that addresses challenges faced by children through centenarians. An open door to all, JFS, through its skilled staff, helps clients confront and deal with their unique struggles, enabling them to move from a time of pain and need to a place of strength and self-sufficiency. Retirement for Michael includes spending more time with his wife of 31 years, Martha, his three children, Rebecca, Johanna, and Ben, and his four-year-old, beloved dog, Addy. In addition, he looks forward to visiting with his brother Cary in Philadelphia, his sister 10
Lisa in Boca, and their families. At home, Michael plans to cook a great deal more and begin work on his family’s genealogy. He will also have more time to catch up on his love of reading science fiction, mysteries, and a wide variety of newspapers and magazines. During his retirement, Michael will still engage and stay involved in performing random acts of kindness to those in need throughout our community. “These are exciting times,” according to Michael. He is certain JFS will continue to serve the Jewish and general communities with its new CEO, Steve Banta. The agency will continue to diversify its funding base, as well as broaden its collaborations with other organizations. “The future is very positive and with JFS’s wonderful staff, the agency will move forward, expanding and creating new services for our community.” Michael offers these thoughts to our Just For Show supporters… “I am happy to be a part of this premier fundraising event. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Each year more than 1,200 individuals and families come forward to help us accomplish our work in the community. Some people visit an isolated older adult for a conversation and a cup of tea while others serve on committees to help plan and organize events, such as this premier fundraiser. Some work with their children to collect food for the agency’s Food Pantry, others put their hands to work in our Resale Shop and some help to deliver meals to older adults in need. FOOD PANTRY Volunteers are needed to join our “Monday Muscle,” team, to assist with unloading and stocking our weekly deliveries from North Texas Food Bank, Trader Joe’s, Snap Kitchen and Kroger. Re-stockers are needed during and after shopping days to make sure shelves are full for the next day’s clients. RABBI GERALD J. KLEIN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR TEENS, NAVIGATING THE WORLD OF NONPROFITS JFS connects local teens to internship opportunities at many of the area's nonprofits. The six-week program is designed to help participants gain knowledge of nonprofit management. JOB SEARCH RESOURCE CENTER Volunteers provide clients direct access to numerous job leads and resources, including through the Internet. As mentors, they offer insight and personal knowledge related to the working world. THE RESALE SHOP Volunteers help sort donations, organize shelves and clothing racks and assist customers at our new store. Organizations are also invited to run clothing drives and volunteer for an afternoon of service at the shop.
SUPPLY DRIVES Volunteers of all ages collect needed food items for our Food Pantry. We also collect personal hygiene items and kits, “birthday bags” and spice packs to offer variety in our Food Pantry.
HOLIDAY GIFT BASKETS Volunteers assist JFS in compiling and delivering 650 baskets all over the Metroplex for Passover and Rosh Hashanah, bringing holiday greetings to those in need.
FRIENDLY VISITORS** A senior in need of companionship is matched with a friend who drops in on a regular basis to chat and share some special time in or out of the home. **Adult volunteers
SPECIAL EVENTS Volunteers plan & staff special events, including Volunteer Appreciation, July 3rd celebration, annual fundraisers and Kosher Chili-Cook Off, to name a few.
INCLUSION EXPERIENCE Volunteers serve as facilitators of the interactive curriculum designed to simulate the effects of specific disabilities. KOSHER HOME DELIVERED MEALS Volunteers help package and deliver pre-cooked meals to homebound older adults. PERSONAL RESOURCE ORGANIZER Volunteers help older adults read and sort their mail and keep their paperwork organized. CLERICAL Volunteers assist JFS administratively by assisting with mailings, database management and day-to-day tasks.
TEEN EDITORIAL BOARD Creative & caring high school students have kicked-off JFS’s first Teen Editorial Board. This opportunity for students is a way to focus on subjects that impact teens’ daily lives. With the assistance of JFS professional staff, teens write and edit articles, blog posts and create e-mail blasts. Visit www.teentalkdallas.com for the latest posts. CORPORATE GROUPS JFS is happy to host a “Day of Impact” or day of volunteerism for your company around our agency working in the Food Pantry, at The Resale Shop, delivering Kosher Home Delivered Meals and assisting with various projects. PLANNED LIVING ASSISTANCE NETWORK OF NORTH TEXAS In 1991, two concerned parents of adult children with mental illness joined forces to build an organization to help address the needs of their loved one, currently and in the years to come. Thus PLAN of North Texas was born. PLAN currently serves over a 120 individuals and their families, using a holistic approach to treating individuals with mental illness with effective sustainable reduction of symptoms and improved quality of life.
PLAN SEASON PASS A PLAN Season Pass allows participants access to over 70 activities and events each month, including educational classes, wellness activities, entertaining field trips and fun-filled social events. PLAN-IT 4WARD A dynamic combination of Group Sessions and Computer Activities designed to help adults improve Social Skills, Neuroprocessing and Social Stamina. While the program is geared to support those with severe and persistent mental illness, that is not necessarily a requirement for participation. This program can benefit anyone who struggles with social interaction and cognitive processing issues.
IRIS PLACE A PLAN Homes & HUD Partnership The PLAN Community Room at Iris Place Apartments, located at 13321 Emily Road, is the site of PLAN's Education & Socialization activities, including Coffee & Conversation, Iris Place Singers, Painting, Self-Care, Research Rally and Life 101, to name a few. JFS Staff, You are the best! Thank you for all your caring expertise that helps people reach personal goals that may have felt unattainable. I see this when children exit the play room with a smile, when someone leaves an appointment with head held high, or when a job seeker brings donuts to celebrate being hired. I read it in thank you notes from someone “who was abused and now is starting a new life” or “who didn’t know where to begin as dementia undermined independence”. I hear it as adults with chronic mental illness and their families celebrate holidays together or organizations call to say, “JFS staff were of great help to our clients, students or staff in our time of need”.
