TUESDAY 3 FEBRUARY 2026
GROSVENOR HOUSE HOTEL

A warm welcome and thank you for joining us today for the 38th Jewish Care annual business lunch and a huge thank you to our main sponsor, the Topland Group, along with our associate sponsor Allsop LLP.
To be able to put on an event every year for 38 years is a remarkable feat. However, it does feel that each year the importance and the relevance of the funds, which we hope you will donate, become greater and greater. Jewish Care is the largest health and social care organisation serving the Jewish community in London and the Southeast. With nine care homes, four retirement living schemes, five community centres, three dementia day centres, a specialist service for Holocaust survivors, social work teams, Meals on Wheels, Befriending, Jami’s mental health services and more, Jewish Care touches the lives of 12,000 people every week. Most of Jewish Care’s services receive no government funding, and each year we need to raise £20 million just to keep our services running, plus an additional £1.1 million to cover the impact of the National Insurance increase, simply to continue providing the care we already offer. While Jewish Care continues to explore cost-efficient ways to manage its financial challenges, it is the support from our community and beyond that will really enable us to provide such critical services, so thank you for being here today.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our two special guest speakers, Lord Wolfson and James Harding. We are incredibly privileged to have them with us today and we look forward to hearing them shortly in conversation.
Each year, an award is given in memory of Philip Greenwold to an outstanding individual who has made a significant contribution to others. I am delighted to congratulate Hannah Lewis MBE, this year’s most inspirational and worthy award winner. Hannah is a Holocaust survivor, educator, and longstanding supporter of Jewish Care.
As Chairman of the lunch, I must say thank you to all the members of my committee for their support and hard work in making this event happen. There are a lot of logistics that go into this day, and I would like to pay tribute to the professionalism of the Jewish Care team, who deal with all we throw at them with good humour and a total focus on making it happen. We would like to thank our headline sponsor, the Topland Group, associate sponsor Allsop and other event sponsors, BKL, Cervidae, Together Money, Dentons, Howden, JLL and Silverstream. And finally, on behalf of the 12,000 lives touched by Jewish Care every week, thank you for attending. We couldn’t do what we do without you. If you would like to get involved in any way, then we’d be delighted to have you on board, so please be in touch.
David Pollock
Chairman of Jewish Care’s Topland Group Business Lunch Committee
Sol and Eddie Zakay and Topland Group are proud to reaffirm our sponsorship of Jewish Care’s Business Lunch and are delighted to welcome Allsop as our Associate Sponsor once again.
Our commitment to charitable causes is a cornerstone of our values, and we are honoured to include our association with Jewish Care among our patronage and support of charities and worthwhile causes.
This year marks Topland Group’s 17th year of sponsorship, and we are delighted to continue our
Allsop is extremely proud to be the Associate Sponsor of the 2026 Jewish Care Business Lunch, which recognises the exceptional work carried out by both individuals and organisations within the community.
partnership with Jewish Care and support their commendable work. Our collaboration goes beyond financial assistance; it is a tribute to, and a chance to thank, all those who generously dedicate their time and enable Jewish Care to continue its remarkable farreaching and extensive care programs.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Hannah Lewis MBE the recipient of this year’s Topland Group Business Lunch Award, dedicated to the memory of Philip Greenwold. Thank you.
Philip Greenwold joined the Pentland Business Luncheon Committee in 1990, three years after its inception. He was always responsible for securing the award winner for the luncheon. Not only was he a Patron and an active supporter of Jewish Care, but he was also a member of Jewish Care’s Property Committee, selflessly offering his expert advice and support. He was involved on a dayto-day basis with Jewish Care and with numerous other causes within the Jewish community.
While Philip was very successful in his business dealings, he was known especially for his honesty and integrity. He also had a great sense of fun that
permeated his work and was a keen supporter of Arsenal FC. As so many of us aspire to do, Philip managed to strike a successful balance between work and family time and it is tragic that someone that had so much to give died so young. He is greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
The committee felt it only right to commemorate Philip’s outstanding contribution to this event, to Jewish Care and to the community. In 2006, it was decided that the award should be renamed in his memory, and it is now known as ‘The Topland Group Business Lunch Award in memory of Philip Greenwold’.

Hannah Lewis MBE is a Holocaust survivor, educator, and longstanding supporter of Jewish Care. A driving force behind Jewish Care’s Woman of Distinction Committee, Hannah founded the original Woman of Distinction fundraising lunch for the Jewish Blind Society (now part of Jewish Care), which has since become a key event in the organisation’s calendar, celebrating its 40th lunch this year.
Hannah has supported major philanthropic initiatives for many years and was awarded an MBE for her exceptional contribution to Holocaust education in 2018.
Born on 1st of June 1937: Włodawa, Poland, Hannah was the only child of a respected and prosperous family. Her early years were happy and secure – until the Nazi occupation changed everything. As war engulfed Poland, Włodawa filled with Jewish refugees fleeing larger cities, with many finding safety in her family home.
By 1943 the Germans began rounding up the Jews of Włodawa for deportation to Sobibór Extermination Camp and to other labour camps. In 1943, Hannah and her family were seized and forcibly marched to Adampol – a slave labour subcamp of Sobibór, a few miles away from her hometown. Over the following months, most of her relatives were deported and did not survive. Her father and his cousin managed to escape and join the partisans, leaving Hannah and her mother alone in the camp.
During the final harsh winter of occupation, Hannah fell severely ill. Her mother refused to leave her side, despite warnings of imminent German killing raids. The next morning, Hannah’s mother was taken and shot, which Hannah witnessed. Hannah – alone, ill, and starving – survived until she was liberated by a Soviet soldier who found her in a trench.

After the war, her father miraculously located her, and the two lived briefly in Łódź. In 1949, at the age of ten and unable to speak English, Hannah was brought to Britain by Basil Feldman (later Lord Feldman) to live with relatives in London. Her father later emigrated to Israel in 1953. Hannah married in 1961 and built a loving family with four children and eight grandchildren.
Despite all she endured, Hannah chose a life of purpose, compassion, and service – committed to giving back.
For more than 30 years, Hannah has travelled the UK with Holocaust Educational Trust, sharing her testimony with thousands of students and adults. She has spoken in schools, public institutions, and on national television, ensuring the lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten. She has served on the boards of both the Holocaust Educational Trust and the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, shaping national remembrance and education.
Hannah also chaired the Lord Mayor’s Appeal in 1988/99, raising over £5 million to create a leukaemia centre at Hammersmith Hospital.
She also founded the celebrated “Who’s Cooking Dinner?” fundraising initiative for the Leukaemia Fund, which has raised more than £7 million.
Hannah Lewis MBE continues to be an inspiration who has given much to the community and we are delighted to celebrate her achievements with this award.
Lord Wolfson graduated with a degree in Law from Trinity College, Cambridge. He started working for Next in 1991 as a Sales Assistant and joined the Board as Sales and Marketing Director in 1997. In 1999 he was made Managing Director and was appointed Chief Executive in August 2001. Since he became Chief Executive Next shares have outperformed the FTSE 100 index by more than 500%.
James Harding is Editor-in-Chief of The Observer and founder of Tortoise Media. He previously served as Director of News and Current Affairs at the BBC from 2012 to 2018. He was Editor of The Times from 2007 to 2012, winning Newspaper of the Year in two of the five years he edited the paper. He was previously The Times’s Business Editor, having joined from The Financial Times where he worked as Washington Bureau Chief, Media Editor, and China Correspondent – opening the paper’s bureau in

Lord Wolfson has always had an active interest in economics, history and politics and was created a Peer in May 2010.

This year, Jewish Care must raise over £20 million just to keep our services running, plus an additional £1.1million to cover the impact of the National Insurance increase, simply to continue providing the care we already offer. Rising costs and increased demand mean we are facing one of the most challenging times in our history.
Many of our vital services, including our Holocaust Survivors’ Centre, Dementia Day and Community Centres, Helpline, and Social Work and Community Support services, receive no government funding at all and rely entirely on the generosity of our community. Your donation will ensure that we can continue to touch the lives of the 12,000 people each week through our vital services.

Jewish Care’s three dementia day centres provide stimulating, therapeutic and fully dementia-friendly activities, including creative sessions, music, movement, even table tennis, ensuring everyone can take part and enjoy a varied, meaningful day. Members can share Shabbat and festivals, build friendships and find comfort in a caring community.
The centres are also a vital service for family carers, giving them valuable time to rest, run essential errands or attend appointments that would otherwise be difficult. Your donation helps ensure that those living with dementia, and the families who care for them, receive the connection, respite and support they need.

Across our community, we are facing an unprecedented mental health crisis. We live in a time when being Jewish carries increasing complexity and, at times, vulnerability. More people are feeling anxious, isolated and unsure, and turning to Jami’s mental health services for support, understanding and a sense of belonging. With anxiety, depression, loneliness and trauma rising sharply, these challenges are becoming overwhelming for many and the need for these services has never been greater.
Without the kind generosity of people like you, we couldn’t continue to be there for everyone who needs us. Thank you.
