a Year of Possibilities
I am a creature of habit.
Though I love having the family together for the Jewish High Holidays, the vast number of days dedicated to planning, cooking and hosting for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur threw off my rhythm.
I craved my routine: my morning coffee, my reading, my regular office hours and my daily swim. After going to the supermarket daily instead of once a week, I longed for my regular schedule. From all I have read, having a morning routine is a healthy choice. Making our beds, eat our oatmeal and squeezing in a workout allows us to start our day with intention and a small win for the rest of the day.

But are we too regimented?
Are we limiting our friendships, avoiding new foodie experiences or passing over opportunities which are outside of our comfort zones because we are satisfied with our lives? Or is it because change threatens to rock the predictability of our day?
Structure and predictability are good. Rigidity can be to our detriment. I am rethinking my routine and wondering if there are modifications I should consider. Is my workout giving me maximum benefit? Should I start ordering my groceries online instead of spending my time in line at the supermarket? Are there new authors I could be reading or new menu items I could add to my tried and true culinary repertoire? My acupuncturist recently suggested I give up my morning lemon juice and try the vitamin-packed celery juice instead. It certainly is not the tastiest way to start my day, but with fresh kiwi, it could potentially work.
Let’s make 2020 more about possibilities than promises. An open mind does not necessarily mean closing doors. Together, let’s commit to REfresh, REboot and REstore our natural sense of adventure and REsist the urge to REmain in our comfort zone. Looking forward to sharing my life revisions with you in the coming year.

ENTERING THE 'WEALTH TRANSFER ZONE' You own a home, maybe two. You’ve amassed a sizeable nest egg, even as you continue to set professional goals. And you spend most weekends spoiling your grandkids or hope to soon if your millennial offspring ever settle down. Welcome to the “wealth transfer zone.” Indeed, your financial picture looks vastly different during the pre-retirement years than it did when you were just starting out. With a lifetime worth of savings at stake, it’s critical that retirement savers put plans in place to protect their assets, interests, and future legacy. Wealth planning involves a comprehensive review of all the decisions that affect your finances as you progress into retirement, from housing choices and eldercare options to investment strategies and charitable goals. It also, of course, seeks to ensure that all estate planning documents are in place to protect your interests in the event that you become incapacitated, and ultimately provide for the tax-efficient transfer of assets to the next generation. Effective wealth planning differs for each individual, depending on his or her unique financial picture and where they are in the wealth transfer zone. During the pre-retirement years, for example, affluent families can begin the process of wealth planning by working with their financial professional to create a visual “road map” to identify significant issues and milestones ahead.
Wealth transfer planning prior to age 65 may also involve business succession planning and an analysis of health care and long-term care expense risks. In the early years of retirement, affluent individuals should weigh the impact of a possible encore career or new business venture on both their financial and wealth transfer plans, and ensure their existing lifestyle, health care, and legacy plans still reflect their stated goals. Bear in mind, the process involves far more than merely dollar signs. Done correctly, a wealth transfer plan conveys your goals for future generations and clarifies the conditions upon which their inheritance will be distributed. It may also earmark causes and charities that will benefit from your estate, to ensure the family’s philanthropic legacy lives on. Of course, loved ones must also understand the nuts and bolts of the plan. Keep in mind, however, that a wealth transfer plan is not a static document. Rather, it must be monitored regularly and updated with every major life event, including a birth, death, or divorce, or a change in financial circumstances. By working closely with a trusted financial professional, affluent individual in the wealth transfer zone can help protect their assets and interests and ensure their legacy for future generations.

Their humble nature belies the magnitude of their support to the Jewish Federation of Broward County and contribution to its Jewish Community Foundation as Legacy members. When learning about their qualification into Chai Care and the services encompassed within the program, acceptance came easily to Joe. He regularly visits and cares for his sole sister as she resides in a group Dr. Joe & Robbi Alexander home that can provide the aroundthe-clock assistance she requires with her special needs. function. Robbi’s compassion for others is exemplified in her daughter, who founded the non-profit We Finish Together as showcased in R unner’s World Magazine . The non-profit provides hope and positivity, strength and connection to individuals facing deep personal challenges in their lives. “People are basically good. Be kind. Be good to one another,” Robbi advises. Although she is now retired from her work in psychotherapy, it remains her passion and lifestyle. She gives free therapy advice to everyone she knows, including her network of professionals. “Have empathy,” she says, “Have compassion. And have fun while doing it!” You can often find her at the mahjong tables doing just that! Community is at the heart of the Alexanders life and this couple with wonderfully warm hearts give of themselves generously. Joe says of his wife, “When I ask where is Robbi, I go looking for people who would be sitting all alone with no one and that’s where I’ll find her,” he continued, “We are fortunate that we have our family and NOW we also have Chai Care. Thank G-d there’s something called Chai Care!”
