The Newsletter for Chai Care, a program of the Jewish Community Foundation of Broward County AUGUST-OCTOBER 2021/AV-ELUL 5781- TISHREI-CHESHVAN 5782 VOL. 5, ISSUE 1

Call me Becki!

O

fficially, my name is Rebecca Jade Tinter and I am proud to introduce myself as the 2021 Chai Care Chair. As a retired Human Resources professional who has worked for corporations, agencies and a selfemployed consultant Becki Tinter for more than 30 Chai Care Chair years, I know how important it is to reach out and assist people when they need it. That is the goal of Chai Care and my own personal mission for the coming year. When I first needed assistance for my mother, Chai Care was there for me. I never anticipated requiring care for my mom, nor was I previously aware of Chai Care’s existence. But after having such a positive experience, I hold Chai Care in a special place in my heart. My goal is to introduce this valuable program to the people who need it and to those who may not know they need the physical, emotional or mental support Chai Care offers. Chai Care is just one of many beneficiary programs under the Jewish Community Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Broward County umbrella, an amazing organization that safeguards educational and social service needs to perpetuate our Jewish tradition and heritage. Traditionally, we celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year with synagogue services and by sharing holiday meals with family and friends. In our joy of cooking and celebrating, it is easy to forget those who are alone and in need of our support. Let us begin this year, 5782, by being mindful of those who would benefit from our outreach. n Wishing everyone a sweet and healthy New Year. Shannah Tovah!

CHAI LIGHTING

ith a heart of gold, Rita Messner has dedicated her life to giving back to others. Growing up in Brooklyn, her claim to fame was graduating alongside classmate Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. After that, she worked for several accounting firms before retiring at the age of 50 and moving to South Florida. Upon moving to South Florida, Rita became involved with the Jewish Federation of Broward County beneficiary agency, JAFCO. JAFCO’s mission is to care for abused, neglected and at-risk children and those with developmental disabilities in the Jewish community and work in partnership with families and the entire community. Rita became a JAFCO Godparent and then sponsored a Bar Mitzvah for one of the JAFCO children, who had lost his birth mother due to a drug addiction and then had lost his adoptive mother due to cancer. Rita’s compassion for helping others goes beyond measure. She has become the heart of their volunteer program, visiting JAFCO every week. She expands, “I hold the babies in the shelter, help with administrative tasks, but most importantly, I get to know the children and the staff. My life has become more fulfilling since I met Sarah Franco, the Executive Director of JAFCO. She heard I wanted to volunteer with children, and after I took a tour of the facility, I knew I found something significant for me.” JAFCO is near and dear to Rita, and spending time with the children is something she is most accustomed to. She fondly remembers spending time with a close friend whose daughter had cerebral palsy. She would help her friend while she worked and developed a strong connection with the child even though she didn’t speak. It was an influential moment in Rita’s life and one she is most proud of. Since her involvement with JAFCO, Rita has created The Rita Carole Messner Endowment

Fund in loving memory of her parents, Rose and William Messner benefitting the Ability Center Summer Camp. She adds “Summer camp is a treasured childhood memory that my parents gave me.” In addition, Rita funded the Rita Carole Messner Serenity Elevator, located at the JAFCO Rita Messner Children’s Ability Center to show her love and support for the parents of children with developmental disabilities. Her Serenity Elevator takes parents to the center’s second floor, a private, quiet, and serene space reserved only for parents, allowing them to relax or connect with other parents. At the same time, their children enjoy the fun activities or have therapy on the first floor. And lastly, she funded the Rita Messner Britto Boomfish Sculpture and the Rita Carole Messner Guest House Screened Patio. And most recently, she funded the brand new lounge at Illuminate in the new Grand Ballroom at the Ability Center. Outside of her tremendous efforts with JAFCO, Rita became a Legacy Society member of the Jewish Federation of Broward County enabling her to become eligible for the Chai Care program, thanks to Kenneth Arnold, her Financial Advisor, who recommended the opportunity. The Chai Care program helps our donors on an individual basis depending on their needs through initial and ongoing assessment and monitoring, planning and problemsolving, education and advocacy, and caregiver coaching and support. Rita is grateful for this program and exclaims, “You don’t wait, do it. Chai Care is a protection for me and my future and assures me that someone will be there for me in a time of need.” For those interested in giving back to the Jewish community, Rita elaborates, “It is essential to give as much money as you can afford to help others besides giving your time to volunteer.” n

FROM THE DESK OF

JEFFREY N. SANDLER Jewish Community Foundation, Chair

Across the decades and multiple generations, the Jewish Community Foundation of Broward has partnered with hundreds of individuals to help them become smarter philanthropists and make the greatest possible impact. Our foundation connects donors and their charitable passions with vital onthe-ground programs with the goal of addressing the most pressing needs, planning for the brightest future, and strengthening our Jewish community. I am proud to represent the Foundation as Chair through June 2023. Joining me on the Foundation Board are 17 Trustees who are committed to overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Foundation and raising the funds needed to strengthen our community and ensure its future. Imagine a Broward Jewish community that can: • Address the food and critical human needs of the nearly 25% of seniors living at or below the poverty line; • Build confidence, promote independence, and teach employability skills to adults with special needs and provide guidance and support to their families • Foster Jewish identity, by funding innovative programs that increase Jewish knowledge, cultural understanding and engage teens, young adults and families with young children in Jewish life. • Counter antisemitism in all its guises by calling on governments to act and by organizing coalitions with other faith and ethnic groups to forge a united front against hate. • Secure a more vibrant Jewish future for our community by partnering with one of our beneficiary social service agencies, synagogues and day schools to address important unmet and growing needs and/or increase its impact in the community. • Do so much more. Whether you’re starting on a modest scale or you are looking to donate substantial assets, we would love to meet with you and learn: • What issues are you passionate about? • What do you see as innovative in the philanthropic world? • If you could solve any problem, what would it be and why? • Have you considered creating your Jewish legacy? There are many types of funds including Donor Advised Funds, life insurance, charitable trusts and endowments available through which you can establish your charitable giving. Your legacy gift can reflect everything that is most important and meaningful to you. A legacy planning process can be the catalyst for meaningful conversations with your family and can build bonds with partners in our community. Jewish tradition teaches us that it is our responsibility to make the world a better place for future generations. Chances are you have spent a lifetime helping people. A legacy gift is a great way to perpetuate your support for the work of the organizations that are important to you now and you want to see thrive forever. Thank you for choosing to make an impact for future generations through the Jewish Community Foundation. n

Impacting the Community

QUESTION:

by Barbara Levin, M.Ed, Vice President, Strategic Funding Impact, Jewish Federation of Broward County

T

he Jewish Federation of Broward County has the incredible privilege, and responsibility, of raising the funding desperately needed to address the most critical needs in the Broward Jewish community, in Israel and in vulnerable Jewish communities around the world. The dollars we raise, stock food cupboards that feed desperate Jewish community members in Broward County, (more than 8% of Broward Jews live in serious poverty with family incomes under $17,000/year) as well as in Israel, and impoverished Jewish communities barely hanging on in countries around the world. Our funds help abused Jewish women escape their abusers, and help elderly Holocaust Survivors facing eviction stay in their homes. Our dollars also provide senior center programming for isolated Jewish seniors, bring Barbara Levin, M.Ed, Vice volunteers to their homes to help, and arrange to have President, Strategic Funding meals delivered to those who can no longer cook for Impact, Jewish Federation of themselves. Broward County The funds we raise, allow low- and moderate-income Jewish families in Broward County to send their children to Jewish preschools, day schools, and camps that not only provide excellent education, but also strengthen ties to our community and will make a difference for generations to come, and improve the quality of education for all. Our funds also provide training and higher education to Ethiopian Israelis, to IDF veterans, and to struggling Jewish community members around the world whose futures without education would look very bleak indeed. We’ve purchased ambulances and met emergency needs for Israel, and provide counseling, glasses, dental work, and other desperately needed items for those that can’t afford them. And we provide high-quality, life-changing programs and education for youngsters and adults with disabilities and with medical needs. Our Federation funds – and the incredible donors that give them - also make it possible to quickly and powerfully address crises such as attacks on Israel, natural disasters here in the US, and crises in our own community. We also plan for the future, commissioning demographic studies that allow our community to plan knowledgeably for future needs and bringing in expertise that allows us to reduce future risks. And we stridently and effectively address anti-Semitism, and anti-Israel bias when it occurs. n

Please consider making a gift to our

2022 Annual Campaign to support the work of the Jewish Federation of Broward County.

You too can leave a legacy… Should we cap YOU?

Two years ago the Jewish Community Foundation of Broward County embarked on a mission to enter into a 4 year partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation called LIFE & LEGACY. The program’s goal is to promote after-lifetime giving to build endowments that will sustain valued organizations and vibrant Jewish communities for the next generation and beyond. The LIFE & LEGACY program does more than encourage Jewish communities to have legacy conversations with their most loyal donors- it provides the structure, training, mentoring and monetary incentives to ensure a Jewish community’s success in integrating legacy giving into its philanthropic culture. LIFE & LEGACY is a community-building enterprise that emphasizes collaboration and works to create a united and strong Jewish community for future generations. A legacy gift stands as a testament to your values and allows your impact to continue beyond your lifetime. You can join the many people in our community who have left a gift to charity in their will or through a retirement plan or life insurance policy. These legacy gifts directly benefit the organizations you specify. Unlike traditional charitable donations, a legacy gift requires no check-writing today. You create a meaningful gift that only gets paid out in the future, yet you are celebrated and receive all the kavod — all the honor — today, without reducing any of the funds available to you during your lifetime. Broward County Partners Participating in LIFE & LEGACY Initiative: B’nai Aviv, Brauser Maimonides Academy, David Posnack Jewish Community Center, Holocaust Documentation & Education Center, Jewish Federation of Broward County, Lubavitch Hebrew Academy, Temple Bat Yam, Temple Beth Emet, Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek, Temple Dor Dorim, Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El, Young Israel Hollywood. STEPS TO HEALTHY AGING

Adults over the age of 50 represent a growing proportion of the U.S. population. That’s due to a several factors, including advances in healthcare and the aging of “baby boomers,” the second-largest living generation. Since 2014, 3 million boomers, Americans born between 1946 and 1964, have reached retirement age every year. Many of these older adults are more active than their previous generational peers and many are health savvy. But many are also struggling with chronic conditions tied to being overweight or out-of-

shape. Some are ignoring recommendations for regular check-ups and screenings designed to catch cancer early or prevent heart disease. “Many older adults are living active lives and working past retirement,” says Andrew Forster, M.D., an internal medicine physician with Baptist Health Primary Care. “The sooner one starts looking after their own health, starting with healthier eating and regular exercise, the sooner he or she will see the benefits – at just about any age.”

HERE ARE 8 STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO STAY HEALTHY AS YOU AGE:

1

Stay Physically Active

Regular exercise, or just staying physically active, can reduce your risk for most chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

2 Eat “Mediterranean”-Style,

4

Don’t Neglect Regular Check-Ups and Screenings

Even older adults can have a tendency to skip regular checkups and the recommended screenings for heart disease and several types of cancers.

Well-Balanced Diet as you age, eating a well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables is even more essential for lowering your risk for heart disease and other chronic conditions.

3

Stay Socially Active With Friends and Family

Staying socially engaged with a wide circle of friends and family can help slow cognitive decline as adult age, studies have shown.

5

Take Medications as Directed by Your Doctor

All adults who take medications to treat chronic conditions should not deviate from their doctor’s instructions..

Alcohol Consumption 6 Limit and Don’t Smoke

If you smoke, quite immediately. Smoking causes about 90 percent of male and 80 percent of female lung cancer deaths.

7 Get Enough Sleep Manage Stress 8

Getting the right amount of sleep is vital for good health. Another factor that can lead to poor health as you age, and contribute to weight gain, is too much stress.

ROSH HA SHANAH RECIPE

Apple Dapple Cake This cake is a classic Amish recipe with a simple vanilla flavor. Use Grammy Smith apples to balance the sweetness of the cake.

WE WISH YOU A HAPPY

On Rosh Hashanah, communities read the Torah’s story of the Akedah, in which Abraham is commanded to offer his son Isaac, presumably as a sacrifice. The Hasidic Rabbi, Menachem Mendel of Kotzk taught that the most difficult part of the Akedah was the journey back down the mountain, after God revealed that he didn’t actually want Isaac’s sacrifice. This is counterintuitive. After all, Isaac survives. But, both come away as changed human beings and their lives and relationship will always be different. During the past year we have lost much-time, experiences, even family and loved ones. As we emerge, the hard work begins. Like Abraham and Isaac, our lives are changed permanently. This Rosh Hashanah, let’s bring all the resilience at our disposal, to our lives. May we bring the strengths that we didn’t even know we had to enable us to go forward to a great year ahead.

MONEY MINDED Planning Around 10-Year Withdrawal Requirements from Inherited IRAs

By Jeffrey M. Mutnik, CPA/PFS

The 2019 Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act (SECURE Act) killed off a popular estate-planning strategy that had allowed IRA owners to pass retirement savings tax-free to their heirs and provide beneficiaries with taxdeferred growth and distribution payments over their lifetimes. Under the new law, however, non-spouse IRA beneficiaries must withdraw the entirety of those inherited IRA balances within 10 years of the original owner’s death. Not only does this burden your heirs with income-tax liabilities, it also has the potential to bump them into higher tax brackets. Ongoing estate planning has always helped individuals achieve their wealth accumulation and preservation goals while minimize their exposure to often-changing tax laws. The elimination of stretch IRAs is no different. Following are some strategies you may consider under the guidance of your trusted financial advisors and CPAs to determine which one may work best for you and your family’s unique circumstances.

Roth IRA Conversions

With tax rates currently at historically low levels, now may be a good time to consider converting a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA and immediately paying tax on the transferred amount. In doing so, you and your named beneficiaries can enjoy the benefit of tax-free withdrawals in the future, since withdrawals taken from Roths are not subject to tax as long as you are age 59½ or older and have owned the account for a minimum of five years. While the immediate tax liability of a Roth conversion may be substantial, it is likely to be less than the amount of tax you or your heirs will pay in the future on annual required minimum distributions (RMDs) from traditional IRAs at potentially higher tax rates. There are no RMDs with Roth IRAs. However, it is important to remember that the tax liabilities you incur taking RMDs from a traditional IRA during your lifetime may also help to reduce the size of your taxable estate and your family’s exposure to estate taxes in the future. This can be a valuable benefit as the government reduces the estate tax exemption, and more families become subject to estate tax.

Buy a Cash-Value Life Insurance Policy

A cash-value life insurance policy funded with IRA withdrawals will reduce the taxable value of your IRA account while enabling you to continue saving for retirement and providing your heirs with a tax-free, lump-sum death benefit at the time of your passing. Your ability to fund a cash-value policy with your IRA assets depends on your age and the value of your estate. It is important to remember that passing an IRA of substantial size to non-spouse beneficiaries under the SECURE Act’s 10-year distribution rule can not only have a significant impact on their tax liabilities. It can also affect their unique financial planning needs and longer-term retirement savings goals. Ongoing estate planning is the best way to ensure you leave your heirs with a lasting legacy that also maximizes tax efficiency.

Divide IRA Assets Strategically Among Several Beneficiaries

Rather than leaving all your IRA assets to one or two beneficiaries who risk exposure to the 10-year withdrawal rules (and a potentially higher tax bracket), consider divvying up your savings among a larger group of beneficiaries. This will enable you to share your wealth and leave behind the legacy you intend, potentially without saddling your heirs with substantial tax bills.

Donate IRA Assets to Charity

Naming a charity as the beneficiary of your IRA or creating a charitable remainder trust (CRT) or charitable lead trust (CLT) to receive your accumulating retirement savings after your passing generally escapes the stretch IRA limitations and related tax liabilities on your heirs. In fact, with a CRT, you can name your heirs as beneficiaries to receive distributions from the trust. Moreover, you do not need to wait until your death to be charitable with an IRA. Under U.S. tax laws, you may donate your annual RMDs to a qualified charity after you reach age 72, thereby reducing the size of your taxable estate and the tax liabilities passed to beneficiaries who inherit your IRA account.

Make Your IMPACT

or over 75 years, the Jewish Federation of Broward County has been the central Jewish charitable organization for Broward County. Our Federation acts collectively and responsibly to meet the needs of the most vulnerable and safeguard our country’s Jewish community, as well as in Israel and around the world. The Jewish Federation of Broward County’s purpose is to enrich Jewish lives everywhere. We do this by inspiring philanthropy to invest in Jewish life by connecting people and igniting passion. The community’s needs are ever-changing. Some needs are critical and time sensitive, and others are ongoing and require continued support. We look to the future and envision a healthy Jewish community for generations to come. Make your impact today to support a better and brighter tomorrow. We bring you the first of two supplemental areas the Jewish Federation of Broward County is targeting to help those in need.

Kavod SHEF

Broward County is the second largest community of Holocaust Survivors in the United States, second only to New York City. Kavod SHEF assists the neediest of our Survivors to pay for utilities to prevent shut-offs, rental assistance to prevent evictions, critical home repairs, dental, vision, and medical care they would otherwise skip, food, emergency home care, and emergency transportation. Donations to this fund receive a 100% match!

Senior Critical Support Services

As our population of Holocaust Survivors, and seniors who need access to services becomes larger, the need and ability to provide quality care increases. This grant will provide critical medical, and health related items that are specifically excluded from Medicare reimbursements such as hearing aids, utility assistance, mortgage and rental assistance to prevent senior eviction and homelessness. Donations to the Senior Trauma Critical Support Grant will receive a 200% match!
