The Road to My
COVIDISCOVERY
COVID, COVID, COVID!
The more I say that fiveletter word, the less I want to Chai Care Chair hear it. 2020 is one year I’d like to cross off my calendar. Zoom has replaced our face-to-face relationships with our children, grandchildren, friends, colleagues and clients. The celebrations of weddings, graduations, holidays and milestone occasions have been replaced with drive-by festivities and the internet. Being virtual doesn’t even come close to a kiss or a hug from your grandchild.
Carol Lasek
My self-diagnosis:
A BAD CASE OF COVID FATIGUE.
The question really is, have we learned anything and if we haven’t, shame on us. The missed opportunities and take-aways are just so numerous.
I’ve learned that the memories are to be cherished of lost family members and dear friends who passed away too early. I’ve learned to be content with downtime (lots of it) on a Saturday night with an old movie and homemade, freshly buttered popcorn (the oldfashioned way). I’ve become reacquainted with our neighbors and dear friends during the day and not just at 8am and 5pm. I’ve learned that being a teacher should be added to the hero list, it’s a really tough job and they deserve more pay and recognition.
CHAI LIGHTING
Oprah Winfrey once said, “To move forward, you have to give back,” and that is precisely what Gina Shull exudes on a daily basis. As an in-home health care practitioner, she witnessed the implications of seniors in isolation and its impact on their mental health. With a heart of gold, Gina made it her life mission to ensure that seniors are always well cared for. She felt the community’s need and turned to the Jewish Federation of Broward County to bring Chai Care to life. Chai Care is an individualized care management program for individuals ages 65+. As a pioneer of the program, she recognized this great need in the community. With decades of working with seniors with emotional and health issues, she put forth her knowledge and developed this program to help legacy donors. She expands, “People don’t necessarily know how to ask for help.” She continues, “Each client has different needs. You give them the support they need by becoming their advocate.” Growing up in a small city outside of New York City, she was fascinated with her parents’ role in giving back to their community. She expands, “As a child, I was always so proud of the work my parents did in philanthropy. It was always an important part of my life to volunteer.” She continues, “volunteering, participating with others on committees, and financially supporting our Jewish community is truly a blessing. Giving back to our community through Jewish Federation is so meaningful for us.” When Gina met her husband, Stewart, they worked at a hospital and were set up by their colleagues. Together, they became heavily involved with the Jewish Federation of Broward County, continuing with the Jewish Women’s Foundation and the Jewish
Stewart & Gina Shull
Community Foundation. Gina and Stewart have four children and are the proud grandparents to their six grandchildren. Today, they split their time between South Florida and North Carolina, enjoying the escape of the Florida heat to spend half the year in the mountains. Most recently, they trained their yellow lab, Lily, to be a therapy dog. They take her to meet with special needs children and sit with patients at hospitals. Gina elaborates, “Lily brings so much joy to others. She has a way of making all of their fears go away.” Gina’s advice for helping others, “Reach out to your neighbors and people you meet along the way and stay in contact with them because you never know what challenges they may be going through.” She further explains, “This is particularly important for the senior population.” Gina encourages others to learn about the Chai Care program, expanding that, “It is a blessing!” The Chai Care program delivers comprehensive advocacy for people confronted with the challenges of aging through individualized care management. Chai Care’s professional team is trained in gerontology, social work, nursing, healthcare, and counseling. The team makes specific recommendations, and they become a part of the individual’s extended family, helping to assure advocacy, referral, and support. n
CHAI CARE, IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?
Do you live alone or have family living away?
To discuss your options, please call Esther Cohen 954-252-6952.
I’ve explored a whole new world of TV shows other than NCIS and Wheel of Fortune. I’ve accepted the fact we need pets as much as they need us; rumor has it that the Humane Society is low on inventory. I’ve discovered how rewarding writing and receiving personal notes can be and have reawakened my creative inner child. I’ve learned the value of cooperation; we’re all in this together.
Have you ever thought of yourself as an older adult who has lost your independence due to a medical condition?
On a final note, my family planted COVID trees so we will never forget the year of the pandemic. But is a visual reminder of 2020 really necessary? Probably not, since it’s impossible to forget THIS YEAR. Rather it is for the next generation, who will hopefully benefit from the wisdom we’ve gleaned. Nevertheless, this is only possible if we take the time to teach them before our memories fade. n
Peace of mind to you and your family so you can age with dignity. The ability to become your extended family providing you support so you are never alone. • Opportunity for education, caregiver support and coaching. • The Chai Care professional team to assist you in navigating the health care system. • The help to identify situations providing an assessment and future plan of care. • The assistance in smooth transitions between healthcare settings: hospital, rehabilitative facility and living residence.
Do you understand your options to have quality of life as you age? Are you comfortable navigating through the healthcare system?

FROM THE DESK OF
STACEY RUBENFELD, MPA Vice President, Annual Giving srubenfeld@jewishbroward.org
At the time this piece was written in January, we have raised over $3,627,999 for the 2020-2021 Annual Campaign. The Annual Campaign is part of over $21M impact that the Jewish Federation of Broward County will make in our community and around the world this year. It is 20% ahead of where we were this time last year. It is remarkable that in a year filled with challenges and barriers not seen in generations, our community was able to stay connected and work together to raise these funds and ensure all those who are hurting right now continue to get the care and support they desperately need. Because of your generous support, we have surpassed our fundraising goals!
Conducting a successful annual campaign during a global pandemic is a major accomplishment and speaks volumes of the commitment to one another and to the future that permeates out of our diverse Jewish community. It is also a testament to the strength and dedication of our volunteers who guide this Campaign in uncertain times with commitment, creativity and enthusiasm.
On behalf of those whose lives will be improved by this amazing communal support, I want to thank everyone who donated to this year’s campaign. If you have not had the chance to make your contribution yet, please reach out to me directly.

MEDICAL MOMENT
Heart Health: Beyond Diet and Exercise Exercise and a good diet can help keep your heart healthy. But there is more you can do. Cleveland Clinic Florida cardiologist David Lopez, MD recommends four tips to promote heart health and a couple may surprise you.
Get enough sleep.
Avoid secondhand smoke.
Sleep is an essential part of keeping your heart healthy. If you don’t sleep enough, you may be at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease no matter your age or other health habits. Make sure to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep most nights.
The risk of developing heart disease is about 25 to 30 percent higher for people exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work. This is because the chemicals emitted from cigarette smoke promote the development of plaque buildup in the arteries. Avoid environmental smoke, and of course, don’t smoke.
Practice good dental hygiene.
Studies have shown that gum-disease causing bacteria can move into the bloodstream and cause an elevation in C-reactive protein, a marker for blood vessel inflammation. These changes may increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Floss and brush your teeth daily to ward off gum disease.
Make time to volunteer.
Studies show that helping others can actually boost your physical and mental health. Benefits associated with giving can include lower blood pressure, lower stress levels, and less depression. The sense of purpose and optimism linked to volunteering is also associated with better heart health.
Heart disease remains the No. 1 killer of men and women in the United States, but there are many ways to lower your risk. Incorporating these habits into your lifestyle is good medicine for your heart.

MONEY MINDED IRS RELEASES 2021 INFLATION-ADJUSTED TAX RATES, OTHER CHANGES FOR INDIVIDUAL TAXPAYERS By Tony Gutierrez, CPA
The following changes to federal tax laws apply to U.S. individual taxpayers, trusts and estates for tax year 2021 and the tax returns they will file the following year.
MARGINAL INCOME TAX RATES For tax years beginning on Jan. 1, 2021, there will continue to be seven individual tax brackets with marginal rates topping out at 37 percent. • 37 percent for individual taxpayers with income greater than $523,600 ($628,300 for married couples filing jointly) • 35 percent for single individuals with income greater than $209,425 ($418,850 for married couples filing jointly) • 32 percent for individual income exceeding $164,925 ($329,850 for married couples filing jointly) • 24 percent for single taxpayers with income of more than $86,375 ($172,750 for married couples filing jointly) • 22 percent for income exceeding $40,525 ($81,050 for married couples filing jointly) • 12 percent for incomes over $9,950 ($19,900 for married couples filing jointly) • 10 percent for individual taxpayers with income of $9,950 or less ($19,900 for married couples filing jointly) • For trusts and estates, the income tax rates break down as follows: • 37 percent for income greater than $13,050 • 35 percent for income between $8,551 and $13,050 • 24 percent for income between $2,651 and $9,550 • 10 percent income amounts of $2,650 or less STANDARD DEDUCTION VS. ITEMIZED DEDUCTIONS The standard deduction increases in 2021 to $12,550 for individual taxpayers, or $25,100 for married couples filing joint tax returns. This is the amount all taxpayers may use to automatically reduce their adjusted gross income (AGI) for purposes of determining their tax brackets. Taxpayers’ whose allowable expenses exceed the standard deduction may instead itemize their deductions and further reduce their taxable income and tax bills for the year. Examples of deductible, itemized expenses, include student loan interest, mortgage interest, charitable donations and certain qualifying medical and dental expenses. It is critical taxpayers recognize the limitations to these deductions, including a $10,000 cap on payments of state and local taxes, which may also be impacted by the state and local tax laws where they live and work. ALTERNATIVE MINIMUM TAX (AMT) The AMT exemption for individual taxpayers in 2021 increases to $73,600 and begins to phase out at $523,600. For married couples filing jointly, the AMT exemption is $114,600, and it begins to phase out at $1,047,200. KIDDIE TAX Minor children under the age of 19 and college students younger than 24 with income of $2,200 or more from sources other than wages and salary will be subject to income tax at the same rate as trusts and estates. Parents may elect to include on their tax returns an eligible child’s unearned income (i.e. earned from investments) that is more than $1,100 but less than $11,000. TAX CREDITS Unlike tax deductions, which reduce the amount of taxpayer income subject to tax, tax credits reduce the amount of taxes individuals owe the government. Following are the 2021 adjustments to some commonly used tax credits: • The maximum credit for qualifying adoption expenses incurred in 2021 (the Adoption Credit) increases to $14,440, up from $14,300 in 2020. The credit begins to phase out with modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) above $216,660 and is completely phased out for taxpayers when MAGI reaches $256,660 or more. • The Child Tax Credit is $2,000 per qualifying child, subject to phase out limitations based on taxpayers’ income. Up to $1,400 of the credit is refundable. • The maximum Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is $6,728 for married couples filing jointly with three or more qualifying children. • The Lifetime Learning Credit, which can be as much as $2,000 for qualifying college tuition, fees and other expenses, begins to phase out for married filing jointly taxpayers when modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) reaches $119,000. The credit is completely phased out when MAGI exceeds $139,000 for taxpayers filing joint tax returns. FEDERAL ESTATE EXEMPTION Pollack Thank you toTAX Berkowitz
FEDERAL ESTATE TAX EXEMPTION The maximum amount an individual who dies in 2021 can exclude from a 40 percent estate tax increases to $11.7 million. Married couples filing joint tax returns can shield from federal estate tax double that amount, or $23.4 million. It is important for taxpayers to remember that this exemption applies only at the federal level, and they may still owe estate and inheritance taxes at the state level, depending on where they live. GIFT TAX There are no changes to the maximum amount individuals may gift to others taxfree in 2021. Individuals may continue to gift up to $15,000 to as many people as they wish in 2021 without incurring gift tax; for married couples the annual gift tax exclusion remains at $30,000. Exclusions to these limitations including gifts of future interest in property and gifts made between spouses who are both U.S. citizens. Under federal law, married couples can continue to make an unlimited number of tax-free gifts to each other. DEDUCTION FOR PASS-THROUGH BUSINESS OWNERS The Section 199A deduction of up to 20 percent of qualified business income (QBI) that is available to eligible sole proprietors and owners of pass-through businesses (i.e. S Corporations), is subject to income limitations. For 2021, the deduction is reduced when taxable income exceeds $164,900 for individuals, or $329,800 for married couples filing jointly and is phased out completely when individual income reaches $214,900, or $429,800 for married couples filing jointly. FOREIGN EARNED INCOME EXCLUSION In 2021, the foreign earned income exclusion increases to $108,700, up from $107,600 in 2020. RETIREMENT PLAN CONTRIBUTIONS The IRS has not changed the 2021 retirement plan contribution limits for 401(k) and 403(b) plans, which remain at $19,500 with an additional $6,500 catch-up contribution for individuals age 50 and older. Similarly, contribution limits to traditional individual retirement accounts (IRAs) and ROTH IRAs remain at $6,000 in 2021, plus an additional $1,000 in catch up contributions for taxpayers age 50 and older. However, self-employed taxpayers with solo 401(k)s and SEP IRAs may save an additional $1,000 in those plans in 2021 for a total of $58,000. That amount is based on their contributions as employers as a percentage of their salary. Additional changes in 2021 apply to the income ranges taxpayers use for determining their eligibility for claiming tax deductions for their retirement plan contributions. For example, the deduction for a contribution to an IRA by an individual covered by workplace retirement plans phases out when his or her MAGI is between $66,000 and $76,000, a $1,000 increase from 2020. For married couples filing jointly, for which the spouse making the IRA contribution is covered by a workplace retirement plan, the income phase-out range is $105,000 to $125,000. When a contribution is made by a spouse who is not covered by a workplace retirement plan but is married to someone who is covered, the deduction phases out when their income is between $198,000 and $208,000. HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS For 2021, the individual HSA contribution limit will be $3,600 (up from $3,550) and the family contribution limit will be $7,200 (up from $7,100). Employees with health flexible savings accounts in 2021 may contribute up to $2,750 to those plans via salary deferrals, the same amount as in 2020. The definition of a high deductible health plan (HDHP) for self-only coverage in 2021 increases to those with deductibles of between $2,400 and $3,600, and for which the annual out-of-pocket expenses for covered benefits (excluding plan premiums) are less than $4,800. For HDHP plans with family coverage, the annual deductible must be between $4,800 and $7,150 with a maximum out-of-pocket expense limit of $8,750.

Mitzvah Days MARK’S STORY From a young age, my mother taught me that as Jews, we always try to help others. It first started with bringing tzedakah to Hebrew school, and later flourished into visiting seniors and helping out in the community any way that I could. Recently with COVID-19, a new mitzvah opportunity presented itself, and I knew it was my time to help. Since the beginning of COVID-19, I have been delivering kosher meals to seniors who frequent the Daniel Cantor Senior Center. I’m very blessed to be a business owner whose schedule is fluid, and I can take the time to make these deliveries. I’ve now memorized every home and person that I have the pleasure of helping in this trying time. Doing these acts of chesed (kindness), I often try to bring my sons with me so that they can learn these selfless behaviors and incorporate them into their daily lives. As Jews, we help our people any chance we can. I’m honored to be of service to my community, and I look forward to these deliveries every week. Some of these seniors are Holocaust survivors, which carries a special meaning for me as many of my family members lived in Hungary and were in the Holocaust, some survived, and many did not. I owe it to these heroes to help and honor them in any way I can. I will continue doing these mitzvahs as long as I’m blessed to have the opportunities to do them.
Sincerely,
Mark Veszi
