QUICK NOTES: J.J. PEARCE • Pearce suffered its second loss of the season with a 55-49 setback to Lake Highlands in the Mustangs’ district opener. Pearce trailed by 20 in the fourth and made a late push, but were held off by the vaunted Wildcats’ rushing attack.

• The Mustangs’ high-powered offense has scored 40 or more points in three of their four games this season. The balanced attack sees Harper marshal most of the passing offense, while Andrew Casagrande leads Pearce on the ground to the tune of 9.47 yards per carry this season.

The Rangers scored three touchdowns in the first nine minutes of Friday’s game against Irving. Touchdowns were scored on a 15-yard pass from Peters to Krauss, a 50-yard pick six by Johnson and a 79-yard bomb from Peters to Beucler.

Jesuit has earned 18 trips to the red zone during the first three games of the year, scoring 15 times. Against Irving, Jesuit went 4-for-5 in red zone opportunities, scoring four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing).

Last Friday marked the beginning of District 7-6A play. This season, Jesuit competes alongside the three members of Irving ISD (Irving, MacArthur, Nimitz) and the four members of Richardson ISD (Berkner, J.J. Pearce, Lake Highlands, Richardson).

The Jesuit Dallas radio team of Tom Walsh and Chris Martinez return to the airwaves on Friday, continuing their 27th season on 770 KAAM.

The Ranger defensive backfield has broken up 12 pass attempts this year over the first four games. Seniors Jake Fults, Merritt Johnson, Cooper Smith and Arsen Ventura are currently tied for the team lead with two breakups apiece.

Over Jesuit’s last four wins against JJ Pearce, the Rangers have averaged 36.75 points per game. Last year, the Rangers scored 41 points, upending Pearce, 41-39 at Eagle-Mustang Stadium.

Opposing teams have only converted 14-of-39 third downs against the Rangers, a 36 percent clip on the year. Last week, Irving went 4-for-13 on third down opportunities (30.7 percent).

This year’s football team will be led by an impressive lineup of seniors, as 45 members of the Jesuit Dallas Class of 2025 will suit up for the Rangers.
