FROM NADA TO PRADA

WHENMYSTATUSTURNEDLUXURY

I grew up watching my mom work multiple jobs to keep us afloat. It was her life’s mission to make sure that her and her kids were well supported in all areas of their lives, including clothing. We walked into Hudson’s Bay ready to spend, the smell of all the perfumes mixed into the air making the atmosphere feel like a euphoria; it was an unfamiliar feeling that I was soon getting ready to be accustomed too. “Is there anything I can help you with today?” said the clerk holding all the perfume samples. My mom answered her in her gentle voice “Yes, I am looking for J’adore

” my little legs dragged behind them as I got lost in my thoughts. All the bright LED lights shining on the most elegant but pricey items. The clerk sprayed the perfume onto the sample paper and passed it to my mom, the look in her eyes I could already tell she had her mind made up. “Can I smell, mommy” the fresh scent of Jasmine, its heavenly fruit salad smell, this is what started my luxurious lifestyle.

As I grew older, that day became more of a memory than a lifestyle. I watched people of middle class go broke because they would rather look like they have an expensive lifestyle rather than to actually live one, that included my mom. I was envious but I was also in love, with the treatment that it got me. The girls at school treated me as “upper class.” The boys chased me. One day during class, a classmate of mine looked to me and said, “you must be rich, why do you live here?” I laughed nervously and replied, “why do you say that?” All eyes are now on us, the room goes silent, everyone waiting for an answer like she was going to expose my double lifestyle secret. She stops- looks me up and down and continues to say “just look at how you dress, you look rich” not knowing what to say, I just stood and smiled.

ation sparked an interest in me; although I to become like my mom, working extremely use my two weeks’ pay on a product that not pay me back, but I also had to use it to , this could be the start of something for me.

ury fashion so important within the lowercommunity? Why kill yourself, so you can talian-made scarf from Dolce and Gabbana, e cheaper options available?

t is a feeling. We are purchasing, a status. y a luxury item, you instantly feel important, ked a new level in a game, we call life. Others nd opportunities come knocking at the door. mom was teaching me a lesson. I was not o be materialistic but being taught that how I f will determine where I can and cannot go in

It was my 20th birthday coming up and I wanted to go big that year. So I went and got myself a gift that I would cherish for a lifetime.

What screams bougie and expensive more than a Louis Vuitton multi pochette cross body bag, I could imagine the soft chocolate, mocha brown bag with its large and wide pink strap wrapped around my chest, unzipping its gold tiny sliders to grab my Fenty beauty lip gloss. What a vision that I was going to make come true.

It bothered me to see the price tag be more than what I had in my savings account. I did my research and found a Calgary gem, Vespucci. Luxury products that are sustainable, recycled, and priced fairly. I walked around the store with only one goal in mind, to find that bag and II wasn’t leaving until I did. There was a section in the store where they kept all their accessories, I found a pair of vintage gold Swarovski earrings, an Emerald green necklace, and other treasures among the case, my heart was beating fast, and my wallet was nervous. My eyes lit up like a candle being lit, I found it. The bag of my dreams was sitting right there, propped up like a trophy in the lighting case. “Can I have this please?” I asked one of the sales associates, he grabbed me the bag and said the price “it’ll be $1500.”

I left that store with the ultimate feeling, the feeling of success and status. This is why we buy luxury.
