President’s Letter

Welcome... Welcome to the one-and-only Worth Avenue, a shopping and dining enclave that is internationally revered for its beauty, its history and its unparalleled legacy of fine customer service. Worth Avenue is more than a shopping destination; it becomes its own experience, from the classic grace of its Mediterranean architecture to the bougainvillea that tumbles over stairwells in shady tucked-away vias. It is a champagne break at Ta-boo’s cozy bar, or a short walk on the beach before the sun goes down. It is window shopping and courtyard dining, wild parrots and fine art. In short, there is only one street that offers visitors the feeling they are worlds away from ordinary life—and that is Worth Avenue. The merchants of Worth Avenue are delighted you are visiting us and are committed to giving you the best in customer service. For more than 100 years, service has been our gold standard, and it’s a value we hold dear to this day. We also want you to feel at home on our beautiful street, and we’ll do anything we can to answer your questions, point you to a great lunch spot, or give you some neighborly pointers (we’re good at that). Most of all, we want you to know that we value your patronage as much as we cherish this charming street. There is only one Worth Avenue—and we know you are going to love it.

PARKING IS PLENTIFUL. Historic Worth Avenue is a street of dreams, and parking is a breeze. Valet parking is available at the Apollo parking lot, just north of Worth Avenue, off Hibiscus Avenue, and at the parking garage, at 150 Worth Ave., just across from the beach. Plentiful two-hour parking spaces are available on Worth Avenue itself, and two-hour metered parking can be found on Peruvian Avenue (one block north of Worth Avenue). If you use one of our parking lots, be sure to ask when you are shopping to have your ticket validated by participating merchants. Please visit our website, worth-avenue.com, for our calendar of events, merchandise and news.

For the release of her Fall-Winter 2018 collection, the designer travelled to Marrakesh, Morocco – a place where Europe meets Africa at the Strait of Gibraltar, a destination engrossed in rich tradition giving rise to the sophisticated

culture of artisanship with an understated haven of serenity. Inspired by her travels, Anne Fontaine has revolutionized the classic white shirt as a staple must-have this season. Throughout the collection you will discover white shirts featuring elements such as blouson sleeves, specialized lace embroidery, ribbon trims, and artisan pleats. Her ability to transform everyday pieces into lively statements brings uniqueness into her collection. A blend of materials, textures, fine details, and bold colors exemplify Anne’s inspiration from Morocco this season.

Less Is More

Clean Eating: Palm Beach Restaurants That Make It Worth It If there’s anything more in demand in Palm Beach these days than exquisite food, it’s a beach-ready body. Luckily for us foodies, local chefs are catching on to the trend of clean eating to help all of us achieve our healthy goals. These brilliant chefs are coming up with recipes (and spoiler alert, even a cocktail!) that please our palates as well as our diets. Take, for instance, Chef Kevin Knieriemen, the Chef de Cuisine at Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa’s Breeze Ocean Kitchen. Knieriemen recognizes the clean-eating trend is becoming “increasingly popular” so he’s incorporated at least four different dishes on his menu that will satisfy diners—without the extra calories. The locally caught ceviche starts with the catch of the day, so guests can be assured that it’s completely fresh and never frozen. Mixed with the dish is passion fruit, avocado and jalapeños—sweet, spicy and undoubtedly on trend. If you’re the back-to-basics type, Knieriemen offers a crudité platter full of locally sourced veggies and a cannellini bean dip. At Breeze, even your main dish can be “clean,” a flavorful tuna poké bowl with sticky rice, cucum-

bers, scallions, soybeans, wakame, sprouts, avocado and tempura crispies. Clean-eating meat-free diners can enjoy more Knieriemen deliciousness with the vegetable and black bean burger—with or without the bun. To sum up his clean eating philosophy, Knieriemen says he chooses ingredients that are “limited in refined grains, salt and sugar, and are still able to provide a delicious dining experience.” With that promise, you’ll definitely lick your plate clean. This kind of fresh approach to food aligns with other trends, like kale, which is still holding steady as a top-ranking green these days. Chef John Scoles at Ta-boo makes great use of it in his Manchego and kale salad, adorned with pepitos and sun-dried cranberries and topped with a light white balsamic. Ta-boo’s (ahi-grade) tuna martini, one of Scoles’ favorite dishes, is garnished with pickled ginger and crème fraiche. Scoles says clean eating starts with keeping things simple. “You should be able to look at the ingredients and instantly recognize what each one is,” he notes. “I want to know exactly what I’m putting in my mouth.” That’s why he is dedicated to working with local vendors with identifiable sources and farm-fresh ingredients. “I aim to serve only the freshest ingredients, full of aroma and vibrant colors,” he says. When the chef makes your food sound like fine art, you better be ready to dive in—guilt-free. Sometimes, when it comes to eating clean, you need to start with your own backyard—which is exactly what The Colony does. The herbs in its dishes come directly from the hotel’s own garden. Aside from housemade smoothies and açaí bowls for breakfast, diners who appreciate gluten-free dishes will be delighted by the cauliflower steak. Served pan-seared with cannellini beans, tomato, fresh herbs and lemon confit, it’s the type of guilt-free steak that you can really sink your teeth into. The integrity of the menu at The Colony is just as important as the hotel’s history, according to General Manager Thomas List, who says, “At The Colony, we use only locally sourced and fresh ingredients that support a simple and healthy approach to dining. Our menus offer exciting and creative clean-eating options that provide a pleasurable dining experience and are well-matched with the beachy ethos of the Palm Beach community.” Sign us up (luxury suite, please, preferably where Frank Sinatra used to stay). The Fabulous Sidecar

Cocktailing with a vintage twist is the HMF specialty

Above, Eau Palm Beach’s Chef Kevin Knieriemen; below, his tuna poké bowl

IF YOU THOUGHT for one second that eating clean means giving up one of Worth Ave’s favorite pastimes (we don’t mean shopping!), then think again, because enjoying a wellmade cocktail is still one of life’s great pleasures. HMF at The Breakers has for many years relied on its tried-and-true Sidecar recipe. The Sidecar was the definitive cocktail of the Prohibition era and was enjoyed by Palm Beach partygoers who were lucky enough to find coveted foreign spirits. The ca. 1929 recipe is straight from the personal playbook of W.R. Kenan, Jr., who was the brother-inlaw of HMF’s namesake, Henry Morrison Flagler. Drinking fresh with a side of history? That’s a trend that we can get into. The best part is that the expert mixologists at HMF are exclusively sharing this recipe with our readers: 2 ounces Hennessy V.S.O.P. 1/2 ounce Cointreau 1/2 ounce fresh squeezed lemon and lime juice Shake vigorously with ice for 15 seconds. Strain and pour into a chilled glass.

Palm Beach Yoga Shala’s owner, Martin Marks, grew up in Palm Beach but honed his passion for yoga at studios in New York, and completed hundreds of hours in yoga certification in the jungles of Costa Rica. “Islanders are used to a certain standard of experience,” says Marks, who graduated from Johns Hopkins University and, later, NYU, with a master’s of arts degree. Marks opened the classically designed, bright, airy and immaculate yoga studio in the center of town, overlooking Peruvian Avenue. Palm Beach Yoga Shala focuses on Vinyasa yoga, a more athletic yoga modality, but also offers restorative classes. The island yoga getaway, which is on the second floor at 317 Peruvian Ave., will expand this season to include a downstairs retail area. BEACH BOD

Nestled on a half mile of private beach, The Breakers Palm Beach is steps away from a world of water sports adventures. The often-calm Atlantic Ocean coastline is the perfect playground for a day of scuba diving or snorkeling around local reefs, kayaking, paddleboarding or a Hobie Cat ride. Fitness at The Breakers has an ocean theme, as even indoor training offers views of the Atlantic. Ocean Fitness, the resort’s 6,000-square-foot indoor and outdoor oceanfront fitness facility, isn’t a typical hotel gym. Resort guests and members have access to state-of-the-art fitness equipment for strength and functional training; a menu of classes, from yoga to powerlifting and plyometrics; personal training; and wellness coaching. The Breakers’ newest fitness class is Run, Row, Ride, featuring a recipe for great cardio with the Woodway Curve treadmill, cycling bikes and rower on the resort’s terrace.

The five-star Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa hugs the Atlantic Ocean—offering a picture-perfect backdrop for, let’s say, stand-up paddleboard Yeauga, which mixes yoga and ocean paddleboarding into one exhilarating exercise. Members and guests can join in a beach boot camp or breathe in the salty air during beachside yoga sessions. The resort offers much more for water lovers, including snorkeling and surfing lessons. Strike up a match on the resort’s Har-tru clay tennis courts, or work out one-on-one with a personal trainer in the onsite fitness center. If classes are more fitting, there are plenty of them, including the Eau’s signature versions of Barre fusion, belly dancing, indoor cycling, mat Pilates and meditation. There’s nothing quite like a spa treatment after a good workout, and the Eau Spa has a reputation for offering 42,000 square feet of all kinds of relaxation. One of only 48 spas worldwide to have earned a Five-Star rating from Forbes Travel Guide, the Eau Spa offers a menu of couples’ treatments, personal massages, body treatments and salon services. All surround the Spa’s signature Self-Centered Garden, an adult playground for lounging, chilling and just hanging out. 100 S. Ocean Blvd., Manalapan, 561/533-6000, eaupalmbeach.com

Viva the Vias! Worth Avenue’s hidden courtyards bring a note of romance to the Avenue BY EMILY C H A I E T

VIA AMORE:

RICHARD CUMMINS / ALAMY STOCK PHOTO

FIND IT: Between St. John Boutique and Island Company, 200 Block WHAT NOT TO MISS: “Amore” is Italian for love, which perfectly describes the romantic feel of one of Worth Avenue’s largest vias. Cascading tree branches brush the walls of the via, while sculptures and art lend it its classical character. Wrought iron gates encompass the walls of the first entrance, and statues and fountains line each terrace. Lost? Be on the lookout for the mosaic compass on the ground near Café Via Flora, a quiet café surrounded by trees, flowers and twinkling lights. Additionally, make sure to spot the can’t-miss mural in the via before enjoying a delicious lunch.

JOSE MORE/VW PICS VIA ZUMA WIRE

VIA MARIO:

LANNIS WATERS/THE PALM BEACH POST VIA ZUMA WIRE

FIND IT: Between Maus & Hoffman and Ralph Lauren, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Small but beautiful, Via Mario feels like it was beamed from an Italian piazza. A fountain greets you at the entrance, and a reflecting pond leads you to a serene Roman goddess sculpture. If you want to have a secluded picnic or lunch, Via Mario is the place for you, as it has tables and chairs in every corner.

RICHARD CUMMINS / ALAMY STOCK PHOTO

VIA PARIGI:

FIND IT: Between Brown Harris Stevens and Il Papiro, 300 Block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Via Parigi mixes the beauty of South Florida and Europe with Old World architecture and tropical palm trees lining the narrow entrance path, opening to a beautiful Parisian-inspired courtyard. The intricate mosaic staircase is one of Via Parigi’s alluring features, and the many balconies add to its European charm. A fountain is the centerpiece of Via Parigi, surrounded by abstract iron statues of the four seasons.

VIA BICE:

FIND IT: Between Peter Millar and Trillion, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Via Bice’s blue-andwhite arched walkway leads you to a courtyard with a replica of the Venus de Milo. The via is most notable for Bice, the see-and-beseen restaurant with authentic Italian cuisine. And you can snag a table outside in its romantic courtyard to fully absorb the via’s vibe.

VIA MIZNER:

FIND IT: Between Select Fine Art and Style Paris, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: As you walk around this via, you’ll see the faded words “Via Mizner” engraved into a small fountain, a testament to the

man who once lived there, atop the shops—Addison Mizner himself. One of the most unique aspects of the via is its small graves, home to Mizner’s pet monkey Johnnie Brown, and Laddie, a dog that belonged to a later Mizner apartment owner, Rose Sachs. This via is also home to Renato’s, Worth Avenue’s most romantic restaurant.

VIA DEMARIO

FIND IT: Between Courage B and East Coast Jewelry, 300 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: Before you enter the via, look up at the entrance and spot the regal lion head staring down at you and the classic architecture and columns surrounding it. Via DeMario is home to a Dionysian statue sur-

rounded by exotic orchids—pearl white when in full bloom. Grab a quick bite to eat at the charming Café Delamar.

VIA ENCANTADA:

FIND IT: Between Maje and Sandro, 200 block WHAT NOT TO MISS: This whimsical via is the perfect place for art lovers. At the center of Via Encantada is the Contessa Gallery, a showcase of contemporary art and sculpture. Two spiraling staircases frame the gallery: a bright pink one and a pastel blue one, each a perfect spot for the obligatory selfie. A pink iron rose sculpture adds another note of whimsy to this via.

PALM BEACH:

A Travel

Guide W R I T T E N BY MA R I E S PE E D

THE NAME PALM B E AC H, like Newport or Palm Springs, evokes the image of a hallowed and privileged enclave of the American elite—names from the old social register, wealthy captains of industry, iconic stars of Hollywood or New York. But you don’t need to be any of these, and you don’t need to live there, to experience its charms, breathe in the tropical beauty, slip in and out of its upscale shops and superb restaurants. Palm Beach is a vacation unto itself—and it’s there for the taking. This is how we do Palm Beach, for a weekend or a month.

WORTH AVENUE

71

10/16/18 1:54 PM

Why we love to go: The Palm Beach story started more than a century ago when the 16-milelong barrier island (anchored by Henry Flagler’s Royal Poinciana Hotel) was ordained a winter retreat for American’s golden age society A-list. In those early days, Worth Avenue was a sleepy little tropical outpost with an alligator concession, a far cry from today’s designer boutiques and luxe restaurants and blocks of parked Bentleys. These days, the community still retains that cachet although in a decidedly younger, more egalitarian style. It’s still rich, still exceptional and still eccentric— but changing with the times. The island is exceptionally lovely for a bike ride or a stroll, and has great restaurants, world-class shopping and exemplary diversions— from the beach to diving to fishing and spas, all served up in the rare tradition of grace and luxury. There’s no place like it.

Key Don’t-Miss Destinations WORTH AVENUE

Worth Avenue has come a long way since its sleepy origins. These days, the Avenue (which is what everyone calls it) is the epicenter in Palm Beach for couture, with international designers like Salvatore Ferragamo, Chanel, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Graff, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co. and many more. The Avenue also boasts several first-rate restaurants, and a series of charming tucked-away courtyards—or vias—for further exploration. Designed by society architect Addison Mizner in the 1920s, the shopping street is three blocks long but is endowed with a romantic Mediterranean charm that elevates it to arguably the most beautiful shopping street in the world.

FLAGLER MUSEUM

Palm Beach founding father Henry Flagler’s beloved mansion “Whitehall,” which he built in 1901 for his wife, Mary Lily Kenan, was sold by his heirs in 1925 and used as an elegant hotel residence. In 1959, Jean Flagler Matthews purchased the property, acquired many of the mansion’s original furnishings and opened it as the Flagler Museum off Cocoanut Row. Today, it is an elegant tribute to the Gilded Age

and a popular tourist destination. (1 Whitehall Way, 561/655-2833)

THE BREAKERS

The Breakers Hotel is synonymous with luxury on a grand Palm Beach scale, but its origins were more modest when it opened as Henry Flagler’s The Palm Beach Inn in 1896 to accommodate travelers on his Florida East Coast Railway. Back then, it was the beachfront annex of the Royal Poinciana Hotel, which Flagler had opened in 1894. When guests began requesting rooms “over by the breakers,” Flagler renamed it The Breakers Hotel in 1901. The wooden hotel burned in 1903 and was rebuilt, opening in 1904. In 1925, The Breakers Hotel burned yet again, and it was again rebuilt, this time in concrete, and modeled in grandiose style after the Villa Medici in Rome. The “new” Breakers reopened in 1926 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The hotel complex has been updated over the years, covers more than 100 acres and is distinguished by two landmark towers and a sweeping front drive. It is still privately run by the descendants of Henry Flagler. It is open to the public and worth a visit for the

grand soaring frescoed ceilings, the commanding ocean views and the opulent nod to historical grandeur. Popular stops here are the retro HMF— The Breakers Palm Beach, a luxe lounge at this historic (and very hot) nightspot, and The Seafood Bar for a great ocean view. (1 S. County Road, 561/655-6611)

SOCIETY OF THE FOUR ARTS

This revered nonprofit cultural organization was founded in 1936 to fill the cultural gap on the island. It contains a gallery, a concert hall, a library and a sculpture garden. The Four Arts presents high-profile speakers, concerts, films and art exhibits (with a perpetual waiting list for memberships). The Four Arts Botanical Gardens date to 1938, with seven gardens illustrating the special plants and landscape design best suited for a subtropical climate; the adjacent Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden adds art to the mix in an “outdoor museum-like setting.” (2 Four Arts Plaza, 561/655-7226)

THE BEACH

The municipal beach at the foot of Worth Avenue offers Caribbean-blue waters and broad beaches for sunbathing, paddleboarding and snorkeling.

 Star gazing

In addition to heavy hitters like Rod Stewart, Rush Limbaugh, Howard Stern and Donald Trump, Palm Beach has been home to the following notable residents.

George Hamilton, actor

Henry Paulson, Treasury Secretary Vera Wang, fashion designer

Butch Trucks, musician

Lilly Pulitzer, designer

James Patterson, author

John F. Kennedy, president

Douglas Fairbanks Jr., actor

Dina Merrill, actress Wilbur Ross, secretary of commerce Yoko Ono, artist John Lennon, Beatle

What to Wear

GET THE LOOK

Lilly Pulitzer may have put Palm Beach on the fashion map, but believe it or not (and the late and much beloved Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau herself would tell you this), Palm Beach style is not all about pink and green. The Palm Beach look is studiously casual, with bright colors, a cashmere sweater loosely knotted around the neck, bare legs, good cheekbones. Everyone is very thin, slightly Kennedy-esque, and blonde is standard. Men drift toward an aging preppie look, with a little Italian tailoring thrown in for good measure. Loafers by Gucci.

MUST-HAVE PALM BEACH ACCESSORIES: For women: Lilly Pulitzer dress

Alhambra necklace from Van Cleef & Arpels

Inside scoop  THE SENSE OF exclusivity associated with Palm Beach may owe its roots to sewingmachine heir and early resident Paris Singer. He decreed that no membership to his Everglades Club would be guaranteed for next season, keeping every socialite on his or her best behavior: One woman was dropped from the club’s roster because she laughed too loud at a dinner party.  WHITE SHOES for men were introduced in Palm Beach in the late 19th century at a

Flaglerowned shoe store. They became popular worldwide, but if you wear them after Labor Day, you may still risk excommunication.  AT JUST OVER 10 square miles in area, Palm Beach is not quite three times the size of New York’s Central Park.  PALM BEACH contains more than 1,100 pools and 100 tennis courts.  IN THE 1920S, there was a “dress censor” employed on the beach at The Breakers to ensure propriety in attire—no skin showing and dark stockings, please.

 THE CARTIER PANTHER [designed in 1917] was inspired by Florida panthers that roamed Palm Beach in the 1900s.  IN ITS 1920S heyday, The Stotesbury House, El Mirasol—at 348 N. Ocean Blvd., just north of present-day Wells Road— sat on 42 acres from ocean to lake, and had 32 rooms, a 40-car garage and a private zoo. The house was torn down in 1957.

 THOSE EXOTIC squawkers wheeling overhead are wild quaker parrots that lend Palm Beach—and most of South Florida— its special tropical charm. In fact, Palm Beach is home to all kinds of wildlife, from its many seabirds like terns and ospreys and wading birds like blue herons, to what swims offshore.

 TAKE A WALKING, driving or biking tour of the island with your own private guide through Leslie Diver’s Island Living Tours (561/868-7944; islandlivingpb.com). Driving tours range from 90 minutes to 2.5 hours and include a walk through the vias on Worth Avenue. Biking tours (bikes not included—you can rent them at the Palm Beach Bicycle Trail Shop) are 90 minutes each and are a great way to ogle the Island’s grand landmarked estates designed by the “Fab Four” of esteemed Palm Beach architects: Addison Mizner, Marion Sims Wyeth, John Volk and Maurice Fatio.

 THE LAKE TRAIL, which follows the Intracoastal on the western side of the island, offers a great view of the Intracoastal and an up-close look at the homes and tropical vegetation of Palm Beach. Start at the North Bridge, where E.R. Bradley’s casino once was (all that remains on the site now is a fireplace)( 2 ), and proceed past The Biltmore and the houses on Hi-Mount Road built on what is known as the coral cut, to an 1897 house called “The Vicarage,” once home to swashbuckling Douglas Fairbanks Jr. The northernmost end of the island is a broad dock once home to Annie’s Tackle Shop and Dock,( 1 ) a mainstay for boaters and residents alike that was torn down in the early 1980s.

Palm Beach—by Sea Not everything in Palm Beach is about terra firma; there are a few ways to dip into the island’s other natural world, too.  ON THE NORTH end, the Atlantic surf breaks are best at the east end of Reef Road.  SOUTH FLORIDA is known for its diving spots, and just up the beach off The Breakers is one of the most popular ones—the Breakers Reef—which is two miles long and teeming with sea life, from corals, sponges and tropical fish to moray eels and even the occasional whale shark. You can arrange a dive through your hotel concierge or check into The Scuba Club in West Palm Beach. Its dive masters know all the best dive sites accessible by boat, from wrecks to colorful drift dives.

 OFFSHORE FISHING is another local trademark. The deep blue waters of the Gulf Stream come very close to the coastline here, so fishing is superb, with anything from big game trophies like marlin and sailfish, to tarpon, shark, wahoo, kingfish, dolphin and any number of other fish,  THE TURQUOISE WATERS off Palm Beach are great for any number of water sports like sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking and Jet Skis. Most hotels have water sport concessions.

depending on season. Hotel concierges can hook you up with a boat

and a captain, or you can visit local sites like fishingbooker.com.

For the Kids  THERE IS ALWAYS pizza in Via Mizner at Pizza al Fresco. Dine outside and enjoy the Florida breeze and stunning architecture made famous by Addison Mizner. (14 Via Mizner, 561/832-0032)  PLAYGROUNDS, FIELDS and tennis courts are all at the Town of Palm Beach’s Seaview Recreation Center. (340 Seaview Ave., 561/8385485)

 THE BEACH AT Phipps Ocean Park features grassy shade, picnic facilities and a playground, all on the Atlantic Ocean. (2145 S. Ocean Blvd., 561/8385400)  THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY of Palm Beach County is housed in the restored 1916 Courthouse in downtown West Palm Beach. Exhibitions feature county history, along with profiles of the

people and events that made the area. (300 N. Dixie Highway, 561/832-4164)

Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens

Get Your Arts Fix ANN NORTON SCULPTURE GARDENS

Ann Norton had no formal artistic training in 1953, when she set out to build her life’s work by brick and chisel, kiln and granite slab. The nine monumental sculptures created on her property have been preserved, all these decades later, as the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, just across the bridge in West Palm Beach. Tucked in a residential street, the gardens and Maurice Fatio-designed house still feel like a best-kept secret. Walking the gardens, with their 300 palm species, surprising water features and fluttering butterflies, feels like escaping into a fairytale ruled by semiabstract giants. (253 Barcelona Road, West Palm Beach, 561/8325328)

78

NORTON MUSEUM OF ART

Also minutes from the island, West Palm Beach’s Norton Museum of Art has been a cultural fixture for more than 70 years, accumulating more than 7,000 works in its eclectic permanent collection. This is where blockbuster exhibits stop while on tour, and where stunning original exhibitions are conceived by expert curators. The museum will be closed until February 2019, after which it will reopen as the “New Norton”—capping a $100 million renovation project nine years in the making, which Executive Director Hope Alswang calls “a vessel for our aspirations.” (1450 S. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach, 561/8325196, norton.org)

THE GALLERIES OF PALM BEACH

But you needn’t leave the island to ogle world-class art, and perhaps take some home. Thanks to the dozen or so galleries interspersed among the shops and restaurants on Worth Avenue and surrounding streets, Palm Beach is a mini mecca for classic and contemporary art. DTR Modern (440 S. County Road) and Taglialatella Galleries (313 Worth Ave., Via Bice) are sleek and vivid, showcasing eye-

popping contemporary masterpieces. Galeria of Sculpture (11 Via Parigi) is the place to go for whimsical glass art, while Ashley John Gallery (410 S. County Road), Mark Borghi Fine Art (255 Worth Ave.) and the John H. Surovek Gallery (349 Worth Ave., Via Parigi) are stately

standbys for American art from the previous two centuries. One of Palm Beach’s newest galleries, the two-year-old M Fine Arts (415 Hibiscus Ave.), is an enclave of French art rarely exhibited outside of Europe.

Arts & Culture FLAGLER MUSEUM, PALM BEACH

The development of Florida’s economy and status as a tourist destination can be attributed to Henry Flagler, who built the Florida East Coast Railway from Jacksonville to Key West. Flagler and his wife Mary Lily Kenan spent their winters in the Beaux-Arts mansion Whitehall, known today as the Flagler Museum, a beautiful, well-preserved national historic landmark. Visitors to the museum can take selfguided brochure tours, self-guided smart device tours or docent-led tours of the estate and Henry Flagler’s private railcar, built in 1886 for his personal use. Visitors can also download the free Flagler Museum app on their smartphones prior to their visit to learn more about the history of the museum as well as have access to audio tours, an orientation video, events calendar and more. Those who

THE COLONY 155 HAMMON AVE., 561/655-5430  The Restaurant at The Colony is so popular it needs no name other than “The Restaurant.” The hotel’s fine dining option, it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and offers a variety of seafood entrees, appetizers, steaks—even a chicken schnitzel. A personal favorite, best enjoyed overlooking the beautiful Florida-shaped pool, is the Bimini Chicken Stack: grilled chicken, avocado, bacon, crispy onions and Monterey Jack cheese, served on ciabatta bread.  Café 155 is another dining option at The Colony that is perfect for the Palm Beacher on the run. Enjoy the café-style atmosphere to have a light breakfast or lunch, or make use of the grab-and-go selections, perfect for fueling up before a stroll to the nearby beach.  Bimini Bar and Royal Room at the Colony are worlds apart; The Bimini Bar is your tropical laid-back hangout outdoors (try the hot dog—we mean it!) on The Colony’s patio, and the Royal Room offers fine dining—two more features that make The Colony irresistible.

The extravagant breakfast buffet has it all: chilled seafood, carving stations, a wood-fired pizza oven, Mediterranean-inspired small plates and an indulgent battery of desserts. Sunday Fundays feature endless visits to the gourmet Ketel One Bloody Mary Bar, beer garden and a personal favorite, the Veuve Clicquot Rich Champagne Garden.  Angle, the resort’s “fine dining” option, offers a farm-to-fork menu featuring prime meats and fresh seafood. This isn’t for

the faint of heart (or wallet); for example, the butter poached lobster is listed as only a starter. Then there’s the $115 Caviar Staircase, which, when paired with Champagne, may be the official snack of Palm Beach.

NYY STEAK, IN SEMINOLE CASINO COCONUT CREEK 5550 NW 40TH ST., COCONUT CREEK, 954/935-6699 Visitors from New York who do not mind a short trip south from Palm Beach may have found their new home! Within the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek,

NYY not only boasts a mean cut of meat, but it also provides a swanky lounge for gamblers and diners to relax. NYY’s in-house butcher (how many steakhouses can actually boast that?) dryages its USDA Prime steak for 21 days; you might view this as the Babe Ruth of steaks. It also has an impressive caviar platter, served with egg, red onion, crème fraiche and chives. A fan favorite is NYY’s thick cut bacon, house-cured and smoked, and presented on what looks like a clothesline, so that the maple lacquer drips into the warm

cornbread positioned below. Being a Yankees fan for one night is completely worth it here.

FOUR SEASONS 2800 S. OCEAN BLVD., 561/582-2800 The official host of the Palm Beach Wine & Food Festival, the newly revamped Four Seasons Palm Beach offers two incredible dining experiences, with a beachfront restaurant and fine dining at its inside restaurant location, which also boasts a gorgeous pergola-style outdoor dining terrace. PIZZA AL FRESCO, 14 VIA MIZNER, 561/832-0032 Pizza al Fresco offers excellent dining (indoors and out) in a romantic via, but without the—ahem—romantic prices normally attached to island dining. You can choose from apps and entrees ranging from lobster bisque, lamb sausage, roast chicken and several pastas to a battery of pizzas locals swear by—especially the Palm Beach Pizza, with mozzarella, smoked salmon, caviar, red onions, capers and sour cream. This hidden gem is a locals’ favorite.

RENATO’S, 87 VIA MIZNER, 561/655-9752 Renato’s is arguably the most romantic restaurant in South Florida, with old-fashioned top drawer service, a tinkling piano, an outdoor patio space that feels positively European and a fine dining menu that is

superb. Renato’s has everything your heart desires, with foie gras to lobster risotto and more. Don’t wait for a special occasion; it’s always a special occasion here.

STARBUCKS, 150 WORTH AVE., 561/651-7740 Starbucks had to leap a few hurdles to land on Palm Beach, which is famously anti-franchise, but it is now a popular meeting spot right smack on Worth Avenue in the Esplanade. Caffeine close to both the beach and action central is all you could ask for.

TA-BOO, 221 WORTH AVE., 561/835-3500 Ta-boo is a tradition on the Avenue, and arguably its most well-known culinary landmark, the place to see and be seen for more than 60 years and counting. It is a local favorite for its happy hour, and regulars know to ask for certain tables. Ta-boo stories include the one that says the Bloody Mary was invented here, and that Joe Kennedy had a tryst with Gloria Swanson in the ladies’ room. True or false, it’s that kind of place—full of great gossip, better steaks and a buzz that never really goes away.

BICE, 313 WORTH AVE., PALM BEACH, 561/835-1600 Bice, which originated in Italy’s fashion capital, Milan, has been a mainstay on the Avenue since the early 1990s, and known for its authentic Italian cuisine and Palm Beach elite clientele. It is one of the island’s see-and-be-seen spots, with legendary bartenders and a Tuscan menu that is solid gold. People rave about the butternut squash ravioli, the seafood risotto, the veal scaloppini. But it’s all divine.
