According to Orlando Pornasdoro Jr., the president of Pagbilao Jeepney Drivers and Operators Association(JODA), many ‘ordinary’ citizens like him might die out of hunger, for they can’t afford to provide millions of peso to buy e-jeepneys, which the government believe as “a symbol of progress and hope for a greener tomorrow.” “Tulad namin na simpleng mamamayan, saan kami kukuha ng pambili noon(modern jeepney)?… magkano lang[ang] kita namin, hindi nila(government) pwedeng basta-basta i-phase out ang[traditional] jeep, marami silang papataying tao sa gutom,” Pornasdoro said, 53 years old. Moreover, he also stated that the modernization program will cause drivers huge debt ‘up until death,’ explaining that the paying off of it might end up passing down from generation to generation.

However, the president also exclaimed that it is possible for drivers to afford the payment needed in buying a modern jeepney, only if the country will set a fare increase up to 50PHP. Meanwhile, Pornasdoro also expressed his empathy for commuters for he is convinced that commuters are also highly affected by the program being pushed. continue on page 3
