You held my hand when I was small, You caught me when I stumbled, and shared a laugh through it all. Da, you were the hero of my childhood days,
Each time I think of you, my heart swells with pride, Just the thought of you brings warmth I can’t hide. I’ll always miss you, Da. But I know you’re by my side.
In moments filled with laughter, Through the sunshine and the rain, I feel your gentle presence, Watching over me until we meet again, Da.
With all my love, Your Devoted Daughter.
Dad
It is hard for me to say goodbye. I will miss that twinkle in your eyes. I was always proud to call you Dad, the best friend a son could have. With a broken heart, I held you, and I saw you Slip Away. Although I loved you dearly, Dad, I could not make you stay. An empty heart, an empty chair. My father’s love is no longer there. Golden heart stopped beating, now you’re loving Souls at rest. God broke my heart to prove to me that he only takes the best.
The times we laughed and times we cried, memories now inside my mind, and though letting go is so very sad, I will never forget you Dad Love Your Son
God called you home, but left me your wisdom. I carry your love in all that I do. Until we meet again, Granddad, thank you for everything. -Love Chub
Life’s Reflections
Takecomfort in God’s promise that death is not the end, but ahead of us is heaven if we belong to Christ. We were not meant for this world alone, and by His death and resurrection, Christ removed the one barrier that separates us from eternal life—the barrier of our sins. When a believer dies, he or she enters into God’s presence. No evil can touch them, and they are secure and at peace forever.
On August 12, 1958, the world was blessed with the arrival of Calvin Lennoldon Gathings, born to Lee Curtis Gathings, Sr., and Christine Beaty-Gathings, who both now watch over him from above.
From the very beginning, Calvin radiated a fiery determination to be the best. He embraced this ethos throughout his life, presenting his best self to everyone he encountered while inspiring his loved ones to do the same. His genuine spirit shone brightly as he made it a point to check in on those around him, ensuring they felt valued and cared for. To be loved by Calvin was truly a gift, and on the morning of January 20, 2026, he answered God’s call, embarking on a glorious journey to be reunited with his Heavenly Father.
Calvin’s educational journey culminated at Booker T. Washington High School, where he graduated in 1975. Following this, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1976, dedicating himself to land-based military operations, security, and defense. His service included tours in Iraq, where he exemplified commitment and bravery. Over 37 and a half years, Calvin built a distinguished career in the military, retiring on April 8, 2018, a decision that filled his family with immense pride.
On January 5, 1980, Calvin married his beloved Angela L. Hubbard, who now watches over him from above as well. Their union was blessed with two wonderful children: Calvin L. Gathings Jr. and LaFescia S. Gathings-Hardin (Antwaun). These children hold dear the countless precious memories created with their father, keeping his spirit alive in their hearts.
Calvin leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory. In addition to his children and son-in-law, he is survived by two aunts, Ellen Cowan and Irene Davis, both of Memphis, TN; three sisters, Annie Hall, Fannie Gathing, and Rita Gathing-Jordan; two brothers, Lee Curtis Gathing Jr. and Carlos Gathings Sr.; and two sisters-in-law, Willa Larry of Georgia and Carolyn Arnold of Memphis, TN. His legacy continues through twelve grandchildren: Tevin, Brianna, Julian, DeVonte, TiKyla, DeAngelo, JaVonte, Zniya, Tyler, Tyrese, Laroya, and Elle, as well as two great-grandsons, Asher Woods and Tylan Hall.
Calvin is also survived by fourteen nieces, nine nephews, and a wide circle of great-nieces, greatnephews, cousins, and friends who will carry his memory forward. A special mention is made of his dear friend, Ms. Althea McDuffie, who shared a cherished bond with him.
While Calvin has departed from this world, his spirit, love, and the values he instilled in all of us will continue to inspire and guide our lives. Let us honor his memory by living passionately and with purpose, just as he did.
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Isaiah 41:10

Recessional
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Psalms 23
