GOOD LUCK & GOOD CURLING!!

Welcome to Whitewood,

On behalf of Town Council and the residents of Whitewood, I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending the 9th Annual Farmers and Friends Bonspiel.

Whitewood may be a small community, but it has always been a place with a big heart. That spirit is on full display during this weekend, when volunteers, curlers, sponsors and supporters come together to make this event one of the most anticipated gatherings of the year.

Over the past nine years, the Farmers and Friends Bonspiel has grown into Whitewood’s largest annual event and something our community is incredibly proud of. What began in 2016 as a great idea to bring people together has become a remarkable success story. This year, the event is expected to surpass an incredible milestone — more than $1 million raised — with nearly all of those funds going back into community groups, organizations and projects in Whitewood and surrounding communities.

The impact of this event reaches far beyond the curling rink. It reflects the generosity of the people who support it — the volunteers who give their time, the sponsors who step up year after year, and the participants who travel from near and far to be part of the fun.

Whitewood has also become known as a destination for recreation and community events. Whether you’re here for curling, hockey, golf, or simply to visit friends and family, we hope you experience the warm hospitality our town is known for.

While you’re visiting this weekend, be sure to stop by the world’s largest curling broom, installed in 2024 at the north end of Lalonde Street beside the Flag Garden. The landmark now welcomes visitors to our community and is becoming a favorite photo stop.

In closing, I encourage everyone to take time to enjoy our facilities and visit the many local businesses that help make events like this possible. Thank you to everyone who has helped Farmers and Friends grow into the incredible event it is today.

Best of luck to all the teams, and I hope everyone has a fun and memorable weekend in Whitewood.

Chris Ashfield, Mayor Town of Whitewood

WORLDS LARGEST CURLING BROOM

The idea of the World’s Largest Broom started 8 years ago - what could Whitewood build to put them on the map!? One night up in the curling lounge the broom idea was born! Whitewood was already known for one of the largest curling bonspiels; it would only make sense for us to have the World’s Largest Broom!!

It took a while to get a plan and arrange contractors and materials, then COVID hit, and then the engineer that had been working on the design moved away. Once everything got back on track it took about 2 years to complete and in the fall of 2024 the broom was installed! Decals and landscaping will be completed this year to finish the project.

Thank you to the following businesses and contractors who helped contribute to this project and for their donations to make this a reality:

Hardline * Vaderstad * CORE * DK Duke Valley View Farms

Maximum Welding * Crushrite * Giroux Contracting * JK Metals

Town of Whitewood * John Hulbert Construction Ltd.

South Sask Rat Hole * Driftwood Engineering

THANK YOU!!

Thank you to everyone who has made this event such a success since 2016! This includes the curlers, volunteers, committee members, auction supporters and of course our generous sponsors! It has been incredible to see this event grow into something we never even imagined!

In 2016 our goal was to have a bonspiel with 32 rinks and raise a little extra money for our rink. That first year we kept getting teams to enter and managed to get to 64 teams the week before the event and the rest is history!

The Fundraiser auction was added just a couple weeks before the first spiel and then in 2017 the committee worked hard to really grow that. In the first two years we raised enough money to complete the Farmers & Friends lounge which has been a great addition to our facility. Each year this auction has grown and it has turned into an event in itself now!

With the bonspiel fundraising continuing to grow each year we started the grant program in 2018 in order to recognize that we have many sponsors and supporters from outside our community and wanted to help as many groups as possible with the funds from the bonspiel.

To date the bonspiel has raised over $890,000 which is truly hard to believe! Thank you to everyone who has made this possible, and especially the sponsors who come back year after year to support this amazing event!!

2025 was another success raising $171,000 over the bonspiel weekend!!
