JEFFERY WHIPPO DEFINES MOTIVATION AND DISCUSSES IF IT CAN BE MEASURED
JEFFERY WHIPPO DEFINES MOTIVATION • Leadership Development expert, Jeffery Whippo defines Motivation as simply internal and external factors that stimulate one’s desire and energy to be continually committed to a job, or a subject, or to make an effort to attain a specific goal. • He believes that motivation can result from the interaction of both conscious and unconscious factors and that the intensity of desire or need, the incentive or reward value of the goal, and the expectations of the individual as well as their peers can all be factors in motivation. • Additionally, Jeffery says that another way of defining motivation is literally just the desire to do things.
WHIPPO’S VIEWS ON MEASURING MOTIVATION • Jeffery Whippo implies that measuring motivation can be done, however it can be very challenging. • The reason for the difficulty in measuring motivation is that motivation is a qualitative, and not a quantitative, value; and because of this, it cannot be measured easily with numbers and or statistics. • Jeff describes that one of the only ways that motivation can be measured in pure numbers is in sales where targets and sales incentives can be used as a measure of motivation. • Outside of the sales space, organizations can estimate the motivation of their employees through the use of surveys and questionnaires.
WHIPPO EXPLAINS HOW EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION CAN BE MEASURED Jeff Whippo identifies three steps that can be followed to measure employee motivation. • Implementing a performance measure for your organization. This really only works if your organization is sales-focused as it can give you an estimate the effort employees may or may not be putting into the business. • Conducting a survey of the employees themselves. It is important to evaluate how much the employee cares about the success of the business, as it has been demonstrated that employees that care about the success of the company are more likely to be more motivated in their daily tasks. • Performing a customer satisfaction survey. Customer satisfaction surveys work well for employees that are more customer service oriented, and can be directly linked to the motivation of the employees. That’s because motivated employees are conscious about trying to make customers happy and will go the extra distance to ensure the highest level of customer satisfaction.
