Message From The Chancellor

Greetings!

At Arkansas State University-Newport, we believe education is more than just earning a credential or degree. It’s about equipping students with the knowledge, skills and support they may need to overcome obstacles and achieve their academic and career goals. That’s what truly makes ASUN a special place to be.

I’m proud of the work we’ve done to implement various strategies that further enhance student experience in innovative ways. One method we are using to advance student success is merging the Academic and Student Affairs Divisions into the newly formed Division of Academic and Student Affairs. By integrating these two essential areas, we are adopting a holistic approach to the student experience, ensuring that every touchpoint—from academics to support services—works together seamlessly. This bold initiative creates a more integrated and supportive environment for our students, ensuring they receive comprehensive assistance and guidance throughout their entire academic journey.

Furthermore, we have prioritized our students' well-being and success by establishing a new Division for Enrollment Management. In Fall 2024, we introduced a new CRM to facilitate admissions, marketing, and enrollment processes more effectively. We have also implemented student retention software to provide structure for the college journey and proactive guidance at critical moments for students. Additionally, we have rolled out the Aviators One-Stop Student Services Model to centralize various student support services, improve efficiency and accessibility, and enhance the overall student experience, ultimately leading to better student outcomes.

Over the past four years, the college has experienced significant growth, garnered tremendous support, and is recognized as a workforce leader in Northeast Arkansas. This is an exciting time at Arkansas State University-Newport, and our commitment to advancing student success will reach new heights with being selected as a new member of the Achieving the Dream (ATD) Network, comprising over 300 community colleges nationwide. We have recently launched several new programs, all designed to promote student success and achievement. We have expanded our allied health offerings to include Radiologic Technology. Additionally, we have partnered with another institution to enhance one of our region’s fastest-growing fields: data science. We have received a multi-institution $7 million state grant for our collaborative efforts focusing on stacked credentials in the areas of advanced manufacturing, food processing, and steel production.

Phi Theta Kappa - 5 star Status

ASUN’s Beta Nu Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) has earned 5-Star Chapter Status for the second consecutive year, the highest level of recognition for excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship. This achievement reflects the chapter’s commitment to academic success and community impact.

In 2024, PTK secured a $5,000 grant to support opioid awareness and Narcan training, partnering with ASUN Student Affairs to educate students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, a $1,000 research grant funded student-led studies on underrepresented women in STEM.

ASUN PTK members showcased their leadership by presenting initiatives at state and national conferences, including the PTK Catalyst Convention in Orlando. Their dedication to service and academic excellence continues to strengthen ASUN’s reputation on a larger stage.

ASU-Newport’s Applied Science Division earned top honors at the 2024 SkillsUSA State Conference, with students excelling in Advanced Manufacturing, Energy Control Technology, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology, and more.

Gold medalists Caitlyn Bradley (Esthetics), Madilyn Woods (Cosmetology), Cyijai Reed (Culinary Arts), and Will Cronin (Energy Control Technology) qualified for nationals in Atlanta. Silver winners included Reagan Smith (Esthetics), Christopher Constant (Computer and Networking Technology), and Sam Jones (Culinary Arts), while bronze went to John Whitehead (Computer and Networking Technology), Raif Crum (Advanced Manufacturing), Rylee Bailey (Cosmetology), and Matthew Miles (Energy Control Technology).

With first-place winners advancing, ASUN continues its mission to prepare students for high-demand careers through hands-on training and industry partnerships.

ASUN’s High Voltage Lineman Technology Rodeo on Monday, November 4, 2024, drawing a crowd of students, faculty, industry professionals, and spectators eager to witness the best and bravest compete in a thrilling day of skill, speed, and teamwork. The event, held on the Newport Campus, showcased the talent and grit of the future linemen currently in ASUN’s HVLT program as they tackled essential challenges designed to test their readiness for real-world conditions.

Gene Sweat Memorial Scholarship

ASU-Newport proudly awarded the inaugural Gene Sweat Memorial High Voltage Lineman Scholarship to Brantley Gholson in October 2024. This scholarship recognizes students who embody hard work, dedication, and a passion for lineman technology—qualities that defined Gene Sweat’s career.

Sweat spent 47 years at Farmers Electric Cooperative, rising from lineman to General Manager, and played a key role in shaping ASUN’s High Voltage Lineman Technology Program. He was also a dedicated community leader, serving on the Northeast Arkansas Higher Education Charitable Foundation and other organizations.

By awarding this scholarship, ASUN continues Mr. Gene’s legacy of leadership and service. Brantley Gholson now represents the next generation of linemen who will keep communities powered for years to come.

Coca-Cola Bronze Scholar

Catherine Frans was named a Coca-Cola Academic Team Bronze Scholar, earning a $1,000 scholarship for her academic excellence and leadership.

Cassidy Powers received the 2024 Welch Scholar Award, recognized for academic excellence and community engagement. The Welch Scholar Award is given annually to honor the first president of the ASU System, Dr. Charles L. Welch.

INMATES Awarded AWS Certification

Two inmates in ASUN’s Prison Education Welding Program became the first incarcerated women in Arkansas to earn American Welding Society (AWS) Certifications.

Traditional Nursing Achieves 100% Pass Rate

Arkansas State University-Newport (ASUN) is thrilled to announce an outstanding achievement in its Traditional Registered Nursing program—its latest graduating cohort achieved a 100% first-attempt pass rate, highlighting ASUN’s commitment to excellence in nursing education.

Dr. Stacie Hay, Dean for Nursing and Health Professions, praised the program, faculty, and students. “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Traditional Registered Nursing program for this achievement. The dedication of Tracy Porter and Regena White has been instrumental in this success,” said Dr. Hay.

This 16-student cohort set a high standard, reflecting the rigorous training, innovative teaching, and supportive learning environment at ASUN. This milestone reinforces ASUN’s role as a regional leader in nursing education, dedicated to preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals.

The 2023-2024 academic year marked an exciting milestone for ASU-Newport, as the Aviator Athletics program took flight with its inaugural seasons of Men’s Basketball and Women’s Softball. These student-athletes demonstrated exceptional talent, teamwork, and perseverance, laying the foundation for a strong athletic tradition at ASUN.

In their first season, the Aviator Men’s Basketball team finished with 13 wins, scoring an impressive 2,002 total points while averaging 77 points per game with a 42.8% field goal percentage. Meanwhile, the Women’s Softball team had a competitive debut, securing 6 wins, scoring 95 runs, hitting 9 home runs, and earning 1 shutout victory.

Beyond their athletic achievements, Aviator student-athletes have embraced a strong commitment to community engagement. Throughout the year, players from both teams have visited local elementary schools, meeting with students, answering questions, and inspiring young learners to work hard in both academics and athletics. These visits have strengthened ASUN’s relationship with the community, reinforcing the college’s mission to support and uplift future generations.

ASUN is also deeply grateful for the incredible support from our Aviator fans. Whether at home games or on the road, our supporters have brought unmatched enthusiasm and energy, helping to create an electric atmosphere that drives our teams forward. Their dedication has played a crucial role in establishing a culture of school spirit and pride that will continue to grow as Aviator Athletics expands.

Phase 1 features a scenic pathway with informational signs detailing the institution’s milestones. This project offers students, faculty, and visitors a unique opportunity to connect with ASUN’s legacy while enjoying the outdoors.

The Center for the Arts (CFA) received major upgrades, enhancing performance experiences. New lighting and sound equipment bring productions to life, while a new scrim, generously donated by the Jackson County Community Theater, adds a professional touch. These improvements ensure CFA remains a premier venue for students, artists, and the community.

Achieving the dream

ASU-Newport is proud to join Achieving the Dream (ATD) as part of the Accelerating Equitable Outcomes Initiative, a nationwide effort to improve student success at rural-serving institutions. ASUN is one of seven colleges selected for the 2024 cohort, joining more than 300 colleges nationwide dedicated to enhancing student experiences through innovative, evidence-based strategies.

As a member of the ATD Network, ASUN is focused on transforming student outcomes through data-driven decision-making, equity-centered practices, and institutional capacity-building. The initiative supports the college in strengthening its approach to student retention, completion rates, and workforce readiness.

The journey began at the ATD Kickoff Institute in New Orleans, where ASUN leaders collaborated with peer institutions and ATD experts to assess current challenges and opportunities. In October, ATD coaches visited ASUN campuses, engaging with faculty, staff, and students to guide the institution in implementing high-impact student success strategies.

Through Achieving the Dream, ASUN is reinforcing its commitment to accessible, affordable, and transformative education. This initiative aligns with ASUN’s mission to empower individuals, advance communities, and foster a culture of belonging, diversity, and innovation.

Scaling Learner opportunity and economic growth initiative

ASUN is proud to be one of eight Arkansas community colleges selected for the Scaling Learner Opportunity and Economic Growth initiative, powered by Education Design Lab’s Community College Growth Engine. This program focuses on creating agile, skills-based education-to-career pathways that align with workforce needs.

Launched in November 2024, this initiative brings together colleges, employers, and local stakeholders to design and implement micro-pathways—short, stackable credentials that lead to high-wage careers. Using a human-centered design framework, ASUN is working to develop innovative learning opportunities that help students transition seamlessly from education to employment.

ASUN secured $3 million to develop stackable credentials in manufacturing, food processing, and steel production, plus $1.675 million for workforce training in the Arkansas Delta, expanding career opportunities and industry partnerships.

ASUN’s first National Science Foundation grant is transforming workforce training, creating pathways for high-demand careers in manufacturing, automation, and industrial maintenance.

Summer CAMPP

ASUN’s Summer CAMPP (Creating Advanced Manufacturing Pathways Program) introduces high school students to hands-on learning in industrial maintenance and automation. Participants explore careers in manufacturing, welding, and technology through workshops, industry tours, and skill-building activities. This initiative, funded by ASUN’s first National Science Foundation grant, aims to inspire the next generation of skilled workers.

Structured Apprenticeships

ASUN’s NSF-funded Structured Apprenticeships provide students with real-world training in manufacturing and automation. Participants earn industry-recognized credentials through a Technical Certificate or Department of Labor Certificate of Completion, ensuring workforce readiness. This program, designed for high school graduates and incumbent workers, connects students directly with high-paying career pathways.

ALIGN Nursing Grant

ASU-Newport was awarded $428,000 from the Office of Skills Development through the ALIGN grant to expand nursing education and workforce training. This funding supports a new high school Practical Nursing (PN) program launching at ASUN-Jonesboro in Spring 2025. Partnering high school juniors will begin coursework and, upon completion, will finish the program the summer after their senior year—qualifying to take the NCLEX-PN exam by September 2026. This initiative strengthens Arkansas’ healthcare workforce pipeline, providing early access to nursing education and ensuring students are workforce-ready upon graduation.

ITAC Department Of energy Grant

ASUN has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to develop Industrial Controls and Maintenance Apprenticeships. This funding, part of the Industrial Training and Assessment Centers (ITAC) program, will enhance technical education and workforce training in Northeast Arkansas.

The grant supports the creation of a Registered Industrial Controls Technician Apprenticeship and an Industrial Maintenance Apprenticeship Readiness program, helping students gain hands-on experience and industry-recognized credentials. ASUN’s commitment to skilled workforce development ensures that graduates are prepared for high-demand careers in industrial maintenance and automation.

Few employees dedicate nearly six decades to an institution, but Geraldine Overbey has done just that. After 55 years of service, Geraldine retired in 2024, leaving behind a lasting legacy at ASUN’s Marked Tree campus.

Throughout her career, she has been a trusted mentor to students, faculty, and staff, providing unwavering support in countless roles. Her commitment to ASUN’s mission will be remembered for years to come.

Mobley Joins Statewide Data Science Advisory Council

Dr. Monica Mobley has been selected to serve on the Arkansas Data Science Advisory Council, expanding the Data Science for Arkansas (DASA) ecosystem to include more two-year colleges. Her work will focus on 2+2 transfer pathways, stackable certificates, and workforce upskilling/reskilling in data science and analytics. This initiative strengthens Arkansas’ data workforce pipeline, ensuring students have access to cutting-edge education and career opportunities. Dr. Mobley’s leadership will help shape statewide strategies for advancing data science education and industry partnerships.

ASUN Teacher Education students partnered with Jonesboro Parks and Recreation to plant and prune trees in downtown Jonesboro, gaining hands-on experience in urban landscaping and environmental conservation.

Eyes to the sky for the Great American Eclipse

ASU-Newport embraced the 2024 Great American Eclipse with education, outreach, and campus events, making the most of this rare phenomenon. ASUN partnered with Crowley’s Ridge Education Service Cooperative to develop K-12 learning modules and distributed free eclipse glasses to students across the region. Career coaches provided eclipse-related presentations and activities in local schools. ASUN also hosted lunch-and-learn events and welcomed the public to campus for the eclipse, creating a shared experience for students, faculty, and the community. The event fostered scientific curiosity, engagement, and a sense of wonder, making it a memorable educational moment for all.

The event continues to be a cornerstone of ASUN’s community engagement, providing a welcoming space for families, students, and staff to celebrate the season while fostering school spirit and community connections.

ASUN is excited to announce that we are building a state-of-the-art Center for Health Sciences to train the next generation of healthcare professionals. With advanced labs, a surgical simulation center, and space for over 500 learners, this 49,000 sq. ft. facility will expand access, address workforce shortages, and create lasting impact across Northeast Arkansas. The Center for Health Sciences is expected to break ground in 2025.
