Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit
S
ince its establishment in 1926, the JCC has played a central role in the physical, social, spiritual and educational well-being of the Jewish and general community of Metropolitan Detroit. Located in West Bloomfield, our facility offers year-round programming for families, children, teens and adults. The JCC includes a fitness center, three swimming pools, a summer day camp, a child development center, an inline hockey center, an interactive children’s museum and an art gallery – to name a few! We continue to expand and diversify our programs, but our goals have remained the same since our founding: to provide the finest programming, events and services, and to guarantee that our JCC is a place of Jewish values where everyone is welcome regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, ability or financial status.

Kids All Together (KAT) (ages 2½-14)
KAT gives children with special needs the opportunity to participate in activities at summer camp. With support from an inclusion counselor, every child has the chance to swim, enjoy arts and crafts, and play sports alongside typically developing peers. The KAT program, which has been recognized by the Autism Society of America-
Oakland County as a model for inclusion, began with two campers and now regularly includes more than 30.
Special Needs Adventure Program (SNAP) (entering grades 5-12; ages 18-26)
SNAP is for older campers and combines typical camp fun with off-campus adventures to destinations such as the Detroit Zoo, DIA, Zap Zone and local parks. SNAP is divided into Explorers (grades 5-8); Voyagers (grades 9-12); and Adventurers (ages 18-26). Mini SNAP (June 12-16) $650 ($520 for JCC members) Mini SNAP is open to campers in 5th grade to age 26. Participants go on fieldtrips during the week and spend time on campus enjoying fun camp activities.
Young Adults All Together (ages 15-26)
Young Adults All Together offers campers the opportunity to enjoy summer fun while learning life skills. Two days a week are spent volunteering for local organizations, with trained staff serving as job coaches; two days are for exploring the community and enjoying camp fun; and one day is for developing “soft skills” such as budgeting, nutrition and personal safety.

Mosaic Arts International 2017 Now through June 17
Featuring the best in contemporary mosaics from SAMA (Society of American Mosaic Artists), this exhibit was juried by Gary Drostle of London; Shug Jones of Texas; and Sergio De Giusti of Redford Township. Featuring the work of Verdiano Marzi Verdiano Marzi teaches mosaic in France and Japan, and at the Chicago Mosaic School. A resident of Paris, Marzi partnered with the Louvre for 20 years to develop and lead the workshop series “Fragmented Image: Mosaic.” His book, Studio Secrets, has been published in French and English.
The Fabric of Survival: The Art of Esther Nisenthal Krinitz July 16 – September 19
Opening Reception: Sunday, July 16, 1-3 p.m. In October 1942, after living under Nazi occupation for three years, the Jews of Mniszek, Poland, were ordered to report for “relocation.” Esther Nisenthal was 15 years old and decided to go, instead, with her 13-year old sister Mania and look for work among Polish farmers. The girls assumed new names and managed to evade the Gestapo. After the war, the sisters made their way to a Displaced Persons camp in Germany, where Esther Nisenthal Krinitz: The Labor Camp

Esther met and married Max Krinitz. In 1949, Esther, Max, and their daughter Bernice immigrated to the United States. Mania married Lipa Kalenberg and moved to Israel, and many years later to Texas. In 1977, when she was 50, Esther Nisenthal Krinitz began creating works of fabric art to share her story of survival. Trained as a dressmaker but untrained in art, she eventually created a collection of 36 fabric pictures of strong, vivid colors and striking details with a sense of folk-like realism. Holocaust Memorial Center docents will be available for questions at the opening of the exhibit. Multiple programs will be scheduled during this exhibition. For updates, visit charachgallery.org.

The Eisenshtadt Family Jerry and Carol Eisenshtadt are two of the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit’s most dedicated supporters and longtime members whose children and grandchildren continue these traditions. When the JCC moved to its current residence in West Bloomfield in 1975, the Eisenshtadts were among the first to join. The couple (Jerry is in financial services with New York Life, and Carol is a residential realtor with Max Broock) and their sons Steve, Howard and Jeffrey were at the JCC almost every day, enjoying sports, the opportunity to be with other Jewish families and numerous programs and events. Jerry and Carol’s commitment to the JCC soon expanded to include leadership roles. Carol is a past president of the JCC and the JCC Board of Directors, and she served as president of
the board of the Women’s Health Club, where she continues to be active organizing day trips around Metro Detroit. For many years, both Jerry and Carol were volunteers with JCC Maccabi, including Carol’s three years serving as director of housing. Like their parents, the Eisenshtadt sons have been active at the JCC and in numerous Jewish organizations throughout the area. Steve Eisenshtadt, a commercial realtor with the Friedman Group, serves on the JCC Board of Directors and was chair of venues for the JCC Maccabi Games & ArtsFest. He and his wife Mallery are the parents of Haley, who is graduating from Case Western Reserve and will work for Microsoft; Lindsey, a student at Michigan State University; and Andrew, a student at Hillel Day School. Howard Eisenshtadt, who works with Title Source, also has served as a volunteer for JCC Maccabi, while his wife Sharon is on the board of directors of both JARC and ORT. The couple own the SHE Boutiques in Bloomfield Hills and Grosse Pointe, and they are the parents of Cole, a student at MSU; and Julia, who will attend the University of Michigan. Jeffrey Eisenshtadt, CEO of Title Source, is a former president of JARC who now serves on the organization’s board of directors; his wife, Wendy, is the former vice president of Jewish Family Services and served as head of the JFS Finance Committee. Both Jeffrey and Wendy are involved with Tamarack Camps and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. They are the parents of Kaitlyn, a student at U-M; and Alec, who will attend U-M this fall.

The Jewish Gay Network of Michigan works to increase the sensitivity of the Jewish and secular communities to the dignity of everyone, regardless of sexual orientation. The Jewish Historical Society of Michigan (JHSM) was founded in 1959 to preserve and commemorate the past for future generations. The only volunteer organization dedicated exclusively to this purpose, the Society has amassed a storehouse of information about the events, traditions and lives of Jewish people throughout the state.
Jewish War Veterans (JWV) of Michigan
The JWV exhibit at the JCC features photos, memorabilia and more that tell the story of Michigan’s exemplary Jewish servicemen from the time of the Civil War to today. Included is a tribute to Lt. Raymond Zussman (1917-1944), who received the Medal of Honor for his actions in France during WWII.

The Matthews Sports Exhibit Jewish Heroes & Other Legends
Dr. Robert Matthews was just 10 years old when he began collecting sports memorabilia (his first finds were mementos of the Detroit Tigers and Jewish baseball stars) – and he has never stopped. Over the years, his impressive collection has expanded to include items from football, basketball, hockey and golf, but baseball is always at the heart. Treasures from Dr. Matthews’ collection are on exhibit at the JCC and include: ★ Mounted baseball cards representing 142 Jewish Major League players Al Rosen
Sandy Koufax ★ R are, documented items relating to Morris “Moe” Berg, a Major League catcher who worked as a spy for the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) and the CIA during and after WWII. Berg’s 1934 films of Tokyo were believed to have been viewed by U.S. military intelligence prior to the historic 1942 Doolittle air raid on Japan. ★ An original work of art depicting 26 current and former Jewish baseball players, with autographs and inscriptions. ★ An autographed copy of the 1948 first edition of Babe Ruth’s autobiography.
★ A 1953 Lafayette High School yearbook with Sandy Koufax’s signature and notes. ★ Baseballs, a bat, a first baseman’s glove and a 1927 James Monroe High School yearbook signed by Tigers legend Hank Greenberg. ★ Miguel Cabrera’s signed baseballs, bats and batting helmet. ★ A program and ticket from the first Super Bowl (1967). “Visiting the display is like taking a mini-trip to the Hall of Fame,” Dr. Matthews says. “Kids can learn about the superstars and appreciate their Jewish sports heritage, and adults can be reunited with their heroes and relive the joys of their youth.” He adds that, “The best part of the whole experience is knowing that others get a chance to see these one-of-a-kind items. The joy is not in having the collection. The real joy is sharing the collection with people who appreciate it.”
