No two classes are the same, so you will never be bored!

From Cookie Monster to the Man in the Best Shape of His Life A three-way mirror changed Rabbi Aaron Bergman’s life. While in Chicago, he’d stopped at a clothing store and decided to try on a suit. He found something nice, slipped it on and went to see how it looked. One step up the pedestal and he was staring at three visions of himself: front, right, left. Something was very wrong, he thought right away: his weight. He’d been chubby as a child, the kid who always had to get his clothes at the “husky boys” shop. It only got worse as he grew up. But in this moment, standing in front of the mirror in Chicago, he decided he was going to get in shape and stay in shape. Just one year later, thanks to a new approach to eating, working out at the Jewish Community Center and with support from his wife and congregation, Rabbi Aaron Bergman of Adat Shalom Synagogue is 40 pounds lighter. In fact, “I feel better now in my 50s than I did when I was in my 20s.” Once he made up his mind to get healthy, Rabbi Bergman wasn’t interested in slowly parting from the things he loved, like two-pound bags of M&Ms (“Those were my idea of the ‘fun size,’” he says), carbs and carbs and more carbs, and tons of potato chips. “I grew up in the era of canned fruit, on the stuff that had no natural ingredients,” he says. “Remember Tang? That’s what people drank because, why would you want to have that fresh-squeezed stuff?” So he went cold turkey – or, in his case, cold tofu. A vegetarian for 13 years, Rabbi Bergman consumes “only what seems not to mind being eaten.” Back to that junk food. It tasted good, but the effects were devastating. “I wasn’t thinking as fast as I used to,” Rabbi Bergman says. His knees and back were in pain, and he was taking medicine to lower his cholesterol. Would he even be able to walk his daughters down the aisle, he wondered. He decided to eliminate all processed food, pasta and rice and items with added sugar. In their place: roasted vegetables (often topped with hot sauce or spices), seitan and tempeh, hummus, lentils, peanut butter, quinoa, fruit and nuts. He loves a zucchini pizza crust that his wife Ruth, who also lost 40 pounds, makes.

He no longer drinks any soda, though he’ll have wine on occasion and loves coffee. Rabbi Bergman began coming to Center Fitness, where he goes on the Rabbi Aaron Bergman, his wife Ruth treadmill or the elliptical and their daughters machine and, his favorite, lifts weights. (Usually he’s got his earbuds in, and the playlist might surprise friends and colleagues. In fact, he favors heavy metal like Metallica and Motorhead, whose music carries a strong beat that keeps him moving.) Rabbi Bergman, who lives in West Bloomfield, says he likes coming to the JCC because it’s friendly and gives him a chance to speak with congregants in a more relaxed way; here, no one identifies him just as The Rabbi. He gets to catch up with friends he might not often otherwise see, because of course “people don’t hang out at shuls during the day.” And he genuinely likes members of the shul and gives them credit for supporting him through the challenges that invariably come with making major changes in life. Rabbi Bergman’s approach to fitness is dedicated, because he says the key to getting something done is putting it on your schedule, and determination, because “You don’t ‘find time.’ You make time.” He works out every day except Shabbat, but he’s flexible, because he doesn’t have to be here at a certain hour or for a particular class. The road to good health, he says, “shouldn’t be a punishment.” Today, the man who says he ate cookies with the ferocity of Cookie Monster believes that food should be savored and appreciated for its taste - and the fact that eating good stuff can save you embarrassment. “I used to have people offering to help me [move] all the time,” he says. “Now, when I’m sitting on the floor, no one asks me if I need help getting up.” ♣

Mark+Lisa+JCC=True Love Imagine that you’re at the Jewish Community Center when, suddenly, you spot her. Yes, the very her that could be The One.

She glances your way, and thank goodness you’re looking manly, cool and confident as you work out. But wait. Maybe she’s married. Maybe she’s got a serious beau. Maybe she’s just not going to be interested. Who can you turn to for help?

Mark Soverinsky approached JCC staff members Mildred and Tony at the fitness desk. The next time Lisa Rosenbaum walked through the door, Tony granted the request. “You see that guy over there?” he said, turning Lisa’s attention to a dark-haired man working out with weights. “Would you be willing to go out with him?”

Two years later, Lisa and Mark Soverinsky were wed, and 22 years later they are still happily married - and in great shape. Mark continues working out with weights (among other fitness activities), and Lisa teaches exercise classes at Center Fitness, where she is also a personal trainer. And to think it all started with a membership to the JCC.

Lisa was a native of Ohio and an advertising professional when she came to Detroit. As a teen she had worked at the JCC in Toledo, and she was eager to be part of the JCC in her new hometown. Working out at the JCC and teaching here is her first choice, Lisa says, because this is a place for everyone. Come in on any day, to any class, and you’ll see all ages, all sizes, from all backgrounds, people on every step of the way when it comes to getting in shape.

Lisa and Mark Soverinsky’s first outing together was for dinner downtown, and Lisa immediately knew she liked her date because he had a great sense of humor. He was happy-go-lucky. He wasn’t,

Lisa says, one of those guys – every woman has known at least one – who can only be described as “weird.” What he wasn’t: prepared for Lisa’s spectacular fitness skills. “Let’s go swimming!” he suggested, only to find Lisa far in the lead.

“Let’s go running!” was Lisa and Mark Soverinsky his next idea. Lisa was quickly ahead. Now there was a woman after his own heart.

Mark proposed while the two were at “The Phantom of the Opera.” Today, both Mark and Lisa, who live in West Bloomfield, do their part to help the world get and stay in shape in every way. Mark is a psychiatrist for children and adults. Eleven years ago and soon after giving birth to their third child, Lisa became a certified personal trainer, which includes everything from gaining extensive knowledge of the body to learning how to teach a class, and began working at the JCC. Today, she also teaches TRX, weights and Muscle Jam. Lisa teaches, she says, “Because I love spreading good health and wellness.” Everything, she says – mind, body and spirit – is connected, and developing a healthy body means creating a healthy spirit.

Lisa recalls a recent visit to Israel where she was running and the landscape was beautiful and the air clean and bright, and along the way she saw bike riders giving her the thumbs-up and the experience, she says, was so perfect it can only be described as spiritual. The mother of Rebecca, Mara and Ellie, who also love working out, Lisa is grateful for the opportunity to help others get in shape at the JCC. She says: “I still can’t believe I’m lucky enough to be doing this.” ♥

Finding a Home at the JCC By Dina Routin

I left my homeland of Israel only to see whether I was living there out of a habit or out of a deeper belief in it. Life brought me to Michigan. When I arrived in West Bloomfield four years ago, I knew only one person: my adopted bubbie. I was a traveler without a plan and without family or friends, yet no matter where I was, I needed to find a place to work out. At first I knew only one road, and I would walk that road back and forth. Later, I dared walking further, expanding my horizon and discovering new trees and ponds. Michigan became a place of constant inspiration. With new people and a new state of mind, I realized that if I wanted to stay, I needed to work. While interviewing for a job at a local Jewish organization, I learned I could get a discount at the JCC fitness center. As I arrived at the center, I was treated kindly, making it possible for me to become a member. Back then I had very little: Two suitcases that I brought with me from Israel, a few new friends and some doubt about whether I did the right thing. It was odd that of the few things I could “invest” in, I chose the JCC. Soon enough the fitness center became my second home. Being a traveler is wonderful, trying to get a job and build a life is a different story. Some days were

promising, while on others I would find myself tearing up while working out. The job fell through, and I was back to “ground zero.” In fact, many times I felt that way, yet with all the turmoil around the fitness center remained my solid sanctuary. I met a few staff people, probably due to my different attitude, character and perhaps even chutzpah. About a year after arriving in Michigan and working every opportunity possible, I met James. A week after we were married, James was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The demands of caring for James around the clock became overwhelming, both physically and emotionally. In order to give him the best care I possibly could, I needed to regain my energy, but leisure time and fitness seemed like an impossible luxury. Unable to break away, I would run around our apartment. Shortly after James died, just five months after we married, I found my way back to the fitness center. Miraculously, like a gift of manna, I got a call from Jim Micovich, the Center Fitness director, asking me to work at the fitness desk. To say this phone call saved me is an understatement. After allowing myself to mourn and gaining the desire to move forward, I was blessed with a purpose and a steady income – all in the place I was at my most comfortable, a place I considered “home.” I worked at the fitness desk for a year, still working out and meeting people, when a position became available at the development office. It was so natural to move from knowing people to managing the donor database behind the scenes. A note at my desk reminds me daily to be grateful. Throughout my life in Michigan, the JCC has been a great part of my personal development. ❂

The Matthews Sports Exhibit Be sure to stop by and visit the Matthews Sports Exhibit at the JCC in West Bloomfield! This impressive exhibit, from the collection of Dr. Robert Matthews, features memorabilia from leading sports stars, past and present, and includes: • An original work of art, depicting 26 current and former Jewish baseball players, that includes autographs and personal inscriptions. • An autographed copy of the 1948 first edition of Babe Ruth’s autobiography. • A signed check and a handwritten 1934 income tax return filled out by Morris “Moe” Berg. An American League catcher and coach, a Princeton grad and friend of Albert Einstein, Berg also worked as a spy for the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) before and during WWII. His 1934 photos of Tokyo helped Gen. Jimmy Doolittle plan his 1942 air raid on the Japanese capital. • Two kippot signed by Sandy Koufax, from only a handful of such items known to exist. The kippot were intended to be given as awards to students at a Jewish religious school. • A baseball and bat signed by Tigers legend Hank Greenberg.
