Teachable Moments L’Dor v’Dor- From Generation to Generation — By Melanie Gruenwald Over the past year, we have had the pleasure of welcoming hundreds of families to Shalom Family and Shalom Baby events and classes. We have observed a significant shift in the people who are bringing the children and babies to experiences. There are an increasing number of grandparents involved with the children. As a ‘transplant’ to Denver, I also understand the struggle of not having grandparents in town. I remember when we lived in California, and my son had special Mondays with his grandmother, grandfather and great-grandmother; their times together were priceless! Even now, when my children’s grandparents come to Denver, our entire family feels so supported and cared for. It is certainly challenging, however, not to have grandparents and a network of local family support. Our family, like many others I know, have built a network of special friends who become our local family—‘aunties’, ‘uncles’ and ‘stand-in grandparents’ for special occasions, birthdays, and holidays. It is wonderful to have grandparents and these ‘special friends’ in our community who participate with our children in Family Program activities! What is lending our community culture towards more grandparent involvement? We are noticing that grandparents are younger and more active, willing and able to romp around with their grandchildren. More moms are returning to full-

time work, and grandparents are serving as caregivers while both parents are at work. Many of our young families are from Denver and have remained here, or moved back to Denver after having children, so that they can be closer to their nuclear family. In addition, a study of young adults who grew up in interfaith families by the Jewish Outreach Institute, found that many of them considered their grandparents to be important role models and connectors to their religion and ethnic heritage. The Family Programs Department is pleased that we can be responsive to this demographic shift. We are building a grandparent database, so grandparents can stay in the loop about upcoming classes and events. We will also be offering “L’Dor v’ Dor ~ Grandparent and Grandchild” classes and events, beginning this summer. Our first “L’Dor v’ Dor” program will be ‘Tales from the Jungle’ in our Reading Jungle- every Friday from 10:30–11:15 a.m. This is perfect time to read a bit, sing a bit, and share some very special time together at the end of the week. Please join us to share your input and experiences. We are looking forward to planting the seeds together with you…. L’Dor v’Dor- from generation to generation.

All classes require pre-registration. There are no refunds for missed classes, but if you choose to come for a makeup in one of our other classes, we’d love to see you! Sticky Fingers Cooking! Children 2—3 years Tuesdays, 11 a.m.—noon $75 plus $15 for a child’s knife to use in class and take home!/JCC $90 plus $15 materials fee (knife)/guests *No discounts or coupons can be used for this class. Sticky Fingers Cooking comes to the JCC....Sticky Fingers, is a local cooking school where young children can whisk, julienne, and fold to their heart's content, and parents don’t have to clean up the mess! Sticky Fingers Cooking enthusiastically believes that kids who are involved in tasting flavorful foods and are a part of preparing what they will put in their mouth, will develop into well-rounded, adventurous eaters. We invite parents and their kids to cut, fix, nibble and share their creations each week. Participants will receive healthy recipes to try at home.

TUMBLING* Tumble Bugs Children ages 8 weeks—pre-crawling Thursdays, 11:30 a.m.—12:15 p.m. p.m. or Tuesdays, 5:15—6 p.m. Parents and caregivers will discover new ways to bond with their babies while enjoying the support of other adults in a comfortable, safe environment. We will explore each child’s individual development levels and discover fun ways to foster growth and happiness. This special time with your child will include songs, bubbles, stories, free play and great exercises and stretching designed for your little one. This is a great way to introduce early socialization skills and meet other families in the community.

This class focuses on gross motor development for children who are in various stages of walking. Wobblers to confident movers explore our tumbling equipment, including balance beams, trampolines, tunnels, balls and more. Each class will begin with a hello song, end with a goodbye song, and include developmental themes, expert instruction and free play.

Outdoor Artistic Tots... A whole body experience!

Maxi Tumbling Children 18—36 months Thursdays, 10:30—11:15 a.m. or Tuesdays, 4—4:45 p.m.

Children 17 months—3 years Mondays, 9:30—10:15 a.m. Explore the world of textures, colors, shapes and self-expression in this introductory art class for parents and their young children. More time will be spent outdoors to help caregivers and children relax and have fun while participating in experiences such as body painting and chalk art. Be ready to make a mess that you don’t have to clean up at home!

Special Fee – There will be an additional $15 materials fee for each session.

For the older toddler who is a confident mover and shaker, and needs some extra room to explore. Cooperative games with children of a similar age are introduced with parental/caregiver support, as well as different movement concepts – “under/over/through,” crawl/walk/jump, backwards/forwards, etc.

MUSIC Boogie Babies Children 8 weeks—pre-crawling Wednesdays 11:30 a.m.—12:15 p.m. Created for pre-crawlers and their parents, this class provides new and fun ways to bond with your babies using singing, finger-plays, nursery rhymes, instruments and movement. Come and nurture your baby’s natural musical abilities in this fun class.

Instructor: Kari Knutson

Children 9—18 months Sundays, 11:15 a.m.—noon Learn to communicate with your child and give them the tools to communicate with you, using simple, everyday signs that could potentially alleviate frustration, tantrums and physical aggression in your toddler. Each class will feature a theme (food/eating, getting dressed/going to bed, play time, etc.) and will introduce a handful of signs most often used. We will then spend time participating in those activities so that caregiver and child will have the opportunity to practice their new “words.” Each fiveweek session covers the same information.

Jammin’ Tots Children crawling—36 months Wednesdays 9:30—10:15 a.m. This class is designed for parents and their children who are on the move. Parents/caregivers support their children as they explore and discover their own abilities to sing and move to a beat. Activities include singing, dancing, instrument play, creative movement, rhythm exploration and pure fun. We also offer Jammin’ Tots Jr. on Mondays for the toddler just starting to crawl and walk.

STROLLER FITNESS Stroller Strides™ Moms with children 8 weeks—3 years Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, 9:30—10:30 a.m. Join Allison Wheeler, owner of Stroller Strides™ in Washington Park, for an early morning workout that includes power walking, interval and resistance training, and core conditioning. All you need is a mat or towel for ground exercises, a stroller and of course, your baby!

Mixed-Age Music/Makin’ Music Children 8 weeks—4 years Mondays, 5:45—6:30 p.m. (wear your pajamas); Wednesdays 10:30—11:15 a.m. Babies love to watch older kids, and older kids love to be leaders in this fun mixed-age class. Parents/caregivers support their children as they explore and discover their own abilities to sing and move to a beat. Activities include singing, dancing, instrument play, and rhythm exploration. Play with egg shakers, rhythm sticks, bells, drums and more. This is a great class for siblings of different age and ability levels.

Pre-natal Yoga Session I: Wednesday, May 25—July 6 (No class June 8 for Shavuot) Session II: Wednesday, July 13—August 17 Session III: Wednesday, August 24—September 28 JCC Room 203, 6—7 p.m. $48/S&F; $72/JCC; $86/guest Relax, stretch, and come meet other expectant moms. Instructor, Jenny Fleming has been teaching pre-natal/post-natal yoga at the JCC for the last eight years. She has been trained in Iyengar yoga and is a massage therapist and a registered nurse. This is a yoga class where expectant moms can do yoga knowing that the poses are safe and chosen specifically for their needs. Sessions will be six weeks long and will occur on an ongoing basis as long as we have enough people to run the class.

Jewish Baby University Summer Session: July 24 & 31, 9 a.m.—4 p.m., Rose Medical Center July 25, 6:30—9:30 p.m., Rose Medical Center August 5, 5:30—7:30 p.m., includes dinner, location TBD $150/couple Rose Medical Center and the JCC For the first time ever, we have compressed our normal 7-week course into a 4-day series. Designed for first-time parents, this innovative program combines childbirth education with an exploration of the Jewish traditions and rituals connected with pregnancy, birth and parenting, and provides an opportunity to create lasting friendships. Instructors Rabbi Jeffrey Kaye (Judaic) and Sue Geissler (Prepared Childbirth), lead this program created by the Colorado Agency for Jewish Education and co-sponsored by the JCC and Rose Medical Center. Please note: participants join the Boot Camp for New Dads and Miracles and Mayhem classes. Enrollment also includes a JCC Family Membership.

Breastfeeding Thursday, July 28 JCC, 6:30—9 p.m. $40/session/JCC (includes partners); $48/session/guest While breastfeeding is a natural process, it is mostly a learned art. The more you know the fewer challenges you might face. After attending a class you will be aware of the obstacles that can occur in the first days and

weeks and know how to handle them. Instructor Donna Brown, R.N., IBCLC discusses the advantages of breastfeeding, how breast milk is produced and how to get off to a good start. We recommend taking this class in the last trimester of pregnancy.

Baby Safe Thursday, August 4 JCC, 6:30—9 p.m. $40/session/JCC; $48/session/guest Join local pediatricians from Southeast Denver Pediatrics as they prepare parents for situations that include difficulty in breathing, choking, seizures, dehydration and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). You’ll learn how to perform infant CPR, how to “baby-proof ” your home, and how to respond to burns, cuts, bruises, head injuries, high fevers and more. Instructors also provide valuable information about the issues new parents often face during the first few weeks of their baby’s life.

ABC’s of Financial Planning Thursday, August 11 JCC, 6:30—9 p.m. $40/session/JCC; $48/session/guest Diapers, bottles and gear oh my! Becoming a parent is one of the most rewarding experiences you will have, yet also the most one of the most expensive. It can be overwhelming to understand the changes required to your saving and spending patterns to plan for the everyday costs of having a child, planning for preschool/grade school and for many parents, saving for college. It's also critical to plan for how your children will be taken care of in the event of a loss of a family member. Seth Davis is a Certified Financial PlannerTM who spends much of his time working with younger families. He will provide a solid overview on the financial topics you need to know about and answer any questions you may have.”

Miracles and Mayhem: The Realities of Motherhood Sunday, July 24 1—3 p.m., Rose Medical Center $30/session/JCC; $36/session/guest New mothers will find a safe and nurturing environment created by instructor Deborah Fishman, Psy.D, for discussing the challenges of coping with motherhood. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore the ways in which your identity will change and how the changes will affect your relationships. Sibling Prep Class Sunday, June 5 10 a.m.—noon, JCC Reading Jungle $5/child/JCC members $7/child/guests or day of A special class for big brothers and sisters-to-be! This hands-on session, facilitated by Judi Morosohk, CAJE ECE Specialist, will give the children pointers on what to expect when the baby comes home., how they can be helpful—and most importantly, reminding them there is enough love for everybody. Through stories, discussion, and hands on activities (like changing a doll’s diaper!), the children will feel more prepared for the arrival of their newest family member. This class is designed for 2 ½–5 year olds.

Stories from Sinai: A PJ Library Shavuot “Camp-In” Children 1–6 and their families Monday, June 6 5—7p.m., JCC Finer Terrace (Social Hall if weather is inclement) $8/person (ages 2 and up)/ $32 max per family/JCC $10 (ages 2 and up)/ $40 max per family/guests or day of Step back in time to when we were all together at Sinai…. This is a perfect way to end a day at camp, share in stories and creative arts with your children, and learn about the festival of Shavuot. Pizza will be served.

Poolside Playdates Wednesdays, June 15—August 24 10 a.m.—11:30 a.m., JCC Pool Join JCC Family Programs by the baby pool for bubbles, chalk, snacks and fun with friends! Tots and their caregivers who join us must be members of the JCC Sports & Fitness Center. Guests will be charged $5 per visit, punch cards available for $45 (for 11 weeks).

Hike with Hazon Sunday, June 26 9:30 a.m.—12:30 p.m. Castlewood Canyon Park (located about 28 miles south of Denver.) We'll meet at Canyon View Nature Trailhead at 9:30. Fees: There is a $7/car entrance fee to enter the state park unless you already have a Colorado State Parks pass. Bring a picnic lunch and snacks to share. Please join us for a short family hike into Castlewood Canyon with Sarah Shulman, Director of Community Education for Hazon. Kids will have an opportunity to follow cairns to find the trail. We will take breaks along the way to sing songs and do activities together, including identifying flora and fauna. After the hike we will gather for a snack/early lunch. Remember to bring hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, extra water, snacks, lunch, and carriers (for the smaller children). After the hike we will gather for a snack/early lunch. This program is geared towards children up to age 6.

Family Programs heads to the Ranch! Friday, August 12—Sunday, August 14 Cap off your summer with a Jewish dude ranch vacation at the JCC Ranch Camp! Leave the cooking and cleaning to us, as you and your children fall in love with our beautiful 400-acre site in the Black Forest. Experience a JCC Ranch Camp style Shabbat with singing, dancing, and a community celebration. Activities for all ages throughout the weekend will include horseback riding, Ninja Acrobats, crafts, hiking, ropes course, evening activities, and more. This weekend-long session will be jam-packed with family fun.

The Reading Jungle Enjoy some “Family Time” in room 205. Open the door and discover a great place to spend time with your young children at the JCC. The Reading Jungle is our delightful family library filled with Judaic and mainstream children’s books, parenting and teacher resources, CDs and toys. With Tales from The Jungle and Playgroup Gatherings, we’ve created many opportunities for you to come and enjoy this wonderful space.

Honi and the Carob Tree A Talmud Tale* Told by Peninnah Schram Honi the Wise One was also known as Honi the Circle Maker. By drawing a circle and stepping inside of it, he would recite special prayers for rain, sometimes even argue with God during a drought, and the rains would come. He was, indeed, a miracle maker. As wise as he was, Honi sometimes saw something that puzzled him. The he would ask questions so he could unravel the mystery. One day, Honi the Circle Maker was walking on the road and saw a man planting a carob tree. Honi asked the man, “How long will it take for this tree to bear fruit?” The man replied, “Seventy years.” Honi then asked the man, “And do you think you will live another seventy years and eat the fruit of this tree?” The man answered, “Perhaps not. However when I was born into this world, I found many carob trees planted by my father and grandfather.
