Allied Jewish Apartments Sunday, April 3 (Every 1st Sunday) From Inner Smiles to Profound Joy A fun class that will easily counteract apathy, negative moods and low spirits. There's a simple technique called the“Inner Smile,” in which we are encouraged on-the-spot to smile inside, despite the circumstances in which we find ourselves. This creates a glow we can actually feel, and that is the key to actively taking charge of feeling better. It strengthens our love for ourselves, and can lighten our moods and our joy gets stronger. The result can be more balance and a steady stream of pleasurable moods to combat worries, stress, tension and irritability. The instructor is Francine Juhasz, who holds a Ph.D. in psychology from Case Western Reserve University, and is an energy management coach, wellness writer (two published books), psychotherapist and accomplished artist. Sunday, April 10 Candle Light Dinner Theatre – Matinee – The King and I The King and I is one of the all time marvels of the musical theatre stage! It’s 1862 and the King of Siam summons an English widow and her son to the Royal Palace in Bangkok to serve as a tutor to his many children and wives to help change his image from barbaric to refined. The music is dazzling and the acting is superb! A unique and touching love story! Thursday, April 14 Lamont School of Music Opera Theatre Production Lamont School of Music Opera Theatre Production - Giacomo Puccini’s Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica) & Gianni Schicchi. Giacomo Puccini's two melodic one-act operas, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi depict divergent paths to heaven and hell. Suor Angelica tells the heart-wrenching story of Sister Angelica. Sent to a convent as punishment for having an illegitimate child, the opera depicts her feelings of guilt and pain dealing with her child's life and death. Gianni Schicchi, on the other hand, is a mischievous episode from The Divine Comedy about a group of greedy family members trying to impersonate a recently-departed relative and write their way into his will. The family turns to Gianni Schicchi, a cunning con artist, to help secure the inheritance. Gianni Schicchi was Puccini's only comic opera. There is an option of being picked up at JCC. B’nai Havurah Thursday, April 14 & Sunday, April 17 Three Daughters Plus One (Israel 2008, Ruth Keusch, Aliza Eshed, Amnon ben Zeev) B’nai Havurah is proud to present the North American premiere of a 2010 Jerusalem Cinemateque Film Festival selection (Hebrew with English sub-titles). This documentary short explores the dynamics of a secular Israeli family with four daughters.Three of the daughters become ultra-orthodox Jews and the fourth becomes radically left-wing. Join us for a screening of the movie followed by a two-part discussion, led by Leah Peer, daughter of film-maker Ruth Keusch. Part one will focus on Jewish pluralism in Israel, as contrasted with the US; Part two will focus on the family dynamics involved in the choices these daughters made. Jewish Family Service Tuesday, April 12 Somalia Somalia's history is a story of Colonialism yielding to authoritarianism dissolving into anarchy. Chaos has reigned since the early 1990s with rampant wars between rival clans, with no functional government in charge. Severe famine prompted the United Nations and the U.S. to intervene in the 1990s with decidedly mixed results. Lately, heavily armed Somali pirates in speedboats have been seizing passing cargo ships and oil tankers and holding the ships and crew for ransom. Tuesday, May 3 Music at Emanuel: Osi Sladek, International Folk Singer and Accordionist Osi is a master performer and recording artist. His best known composition Shir Hatsanchanim, became the official hymn of the Israeli Paratroopers. He has been featured on PBS with one of his songs performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
