How to Register

About the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center Welcome to all! For more than 80 years, the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center (JCC) has offered social, recreational and educational programs to the community. The Center and its programs are open to everyone, regardless of religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or ability to pay. No matter your age or interest, there’s something for you at the JCC.

JCC Annual Membership Become a JCC annual member and become part of our community. A JCC annual membership is a prerequisite when joining the JCC Sports & Fitness Center and it is strongly encouraged when enrolling in any JCC or MACC class or program. The membership fees are $60/year for individuals, $90/year for a mini-family (two people living at the same household address), and $100/year for families (three or more people). Senior membership is $30/year per individual and $60/year for couples. The purchase of an annual membership will entitle you to program enrollment at a discounted price (noted in program description sections). Memberships at the Tennis and JCC Sports & Fitness Centers are available for additional fees. Memberships must be renewed annually, and are non-refundable and non-transferable. The amount of your membership fee in excess of $25 is tax deductible ($35 for individuals, $65 for mini-family, $75 for family, $5 for senior individual and $35 for senior couple). You have the option of pre-paying your annual membership fee for two or three years and receiving a JCC gift card, applicable to any JCC member services except for paying for JCC Sports & Fitness Center monthly membership. You will receive a $50 gift card for a two-year pre-payment, and a $100 gift card for a three-year pre-payment. Gift cards for seniors are $25 and $50 respectively.

Please use the form on page 49 to register for classes. The form can be mailed or dropped off at the Center. Members may register for programs online. Go to www.jccdenver.org and click on “Program Registration.” If you are a first-time user, enter your account information. You will also need your member number the first time you sign-in online. Your member number can be found on your paper statements, or you can request it from the JCC accounting department at accounting@jccdenver.org. Please include your full name and street address. We will respond to your e-mail within one business day. Please note: members cannot register for ECC classes or summer camps online. Please contact the JCC Early Childhood Center at (303) 316-6377 to register for ECC classes. Information on summer camps, including registration forms, can be found in the annual Summer Fun Guide. All programs are subject to cancellation. If a program is cancelled, you will be notified, and your fee will be refunded in full. Instructions for submitting your form and payment can be found on the registration form at the back of this guide.

Scholarship Assistance In recognition of the needs of individuals and families in our community who wish to participate in our programs but are unable to afford the full fees, the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center offers scholarship assistance whenever possible. Each program director can give you more information; please call (303) 399-2660.

People with Special Needs and Disabilities The JCC is committed to welcoming people with special needs and disabilities through its Yad b’ Yad (“Hand in Hand”) program, which offers educational, cultural and recreational opportunities available throughout the Center. These opportunities include a lift in the indoor swimming pool, special fitness classes and programs and camping experiences. (See page x for program details).

Kashrut Policy The JCC is a kosher facility supervised by the TRI SULOM. Any lunches or snacks brought to the Center by program participants and visitors should be meat free.

MACC (Mizel Arts & Culture Center) Located on the JCC campus, MACC is a separate non-profit organization. MACC offers programs in the visual, performing, literary and cinematic arts.

Guide to Our Departments Aquatics The Goldstein Indoor Pool (year-round) and the Chotin Family Outdoor Pools (May-October) offer adult, child and parent-tot programs to provide the life-long health benefits of water exercise and recreational swim. Sports & Fitness Center members have full access to lap swimming, AquaFit classes, recreational swim and discounted swim lessons fees. Arthritis and Swim Safe Academy classes, special programs, and event rentals are open to all JCC members during scheduled times for a fee.

Camp Central Although camp is a central focus during the summer, the JCC also offers a year-round camp experience which offers exciting and fun activities for school vacations and Jewish holidays. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to find the perfect fit for your child’s interests and your schedule at the JCC.

Early Education and Family Programs Three unique programs combine beneath the umbrella of one department to ensure that parents and our youngest members receive the information, support and engaging programs they need to thrive:

Early Childhood Center (ECC) Since 1935, the JCC’s Early Childhood Center has provided a highquality, well-rounded, enriching experience for young children. The ECC offers a pre-school program serving children ages 12 weeks–5 years. Variable program options from 7 a.m.–6 p.m. include a full-day enriched pre-Kindergarten program, weekly swim instruction for children ages three and older and weekly gym and music enrichment for all ages. Afternoon enrichment classes allow children to delve deeper into specialty areas such as Hebrew, cooking and literature. We foster children’s natural curiosity and capability through child-directed play and a nurturing and supportive environment.

Family Programs In addition to welcoming families and their newborns to the community, Shalom Baby and Shalom Family programs provide child development information, parenting skills, children’s classes, holiday celebrations and support from caring volunteers and professionals. The Reading Jungle and The PJ Library make reading enjoyable for the entire family and enables parents to strengthen their parenting and Judaic knowledge. Family programming at the JCC helps young families to create vibrant Jewish homes as well as lifelong connections to heritage, friends and community.

Rose and Robyn Loup Child Care Center Quality infant and child care (the maximum stay is three hours/day) is offered as a service to all JCC and Sports & Fitness Center members with a reservation. A parent or guardian must remain on the JCC campus during the child’s stay except for extended care pre/post camps reservations.

Seniors The JCC senior department offers a home away from home for seniors, with programs to stimulate the mind, body and soul. It’s a place to socialize with friends and make new ones in a warm, welcoming environment.

Newly Renovated JCC Sports & Fitness Center While some programs and services at the JCC Sports & Fitness Center are open to all JCC members, a Sports & Fitness membership brings numerous additional benefits. Our 30,000 square foot Fitness Center offers a wide range of top-notch programs and services, plus all the amenities you expect in a premier facility. At the JCC Sports & Fitness Center, you’ll find everything you need to have fun while getting fit. Families, kids, seniors and performance athletes all will enjoy working out in a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. Sports & Fitness Center members can take advantage of group fitness classes, athletic leagues, personal training, Hot Yoga, Pilates, Physical Therapy, Massage and many other amenities such as indoor and outdoor pools as well as basketball.

JCC Maccabi Teen Network The new JCC Maccabi Teen Network will be a programming resource for all Denver Jewish teens. Utilizing the wide array of resources the JCC has to offer, the JCC Maccabi Teen Network will provide new and engaging programs geared specifically to teens. Building on the success of the 2010 Denver JCC Maccabi Games, the JCC Maccabi Teen Network will encourage Denver teens to deepen the relationships formed through the Games as well as provide a context for creating new friendships. These programs will also welcome teens and tweens who have not previously been involved with the Games but are interested in connecting with their peers in a Jewish environment. In addition to a variety of program offerings, a dedicated space to teens has been created in the JCC’s Cooper Balcony. Tennis Center Known as the friendliest club in town, the JCC Tennis Center offers indoor and outdoor play. The Center’s programs include drill classes, private lessons, leagues, year-round junior programs and much more. Although some programs are limited to Tennis Center members, others may be open to JCC members.

Party Packages 2—13 years Looking for a fun and unique way to celebrate your child’s special occasion? We offer a variety of party packages. For an additional fee, staff will decorate the party room. JCC kosher guidelines must be observed for all food and beverages. In observance of the Sabbath, Saturday parties can be held only in the afternoon and must be paid for in advance. Party Packages ($175–$250) includes a two-hour reservation for the gymnasium, multipurpose room or the indoor pool. One to three staff members (lifeguard and party staff) attend; you must provide at least one adult assistant. For more information, call (303) 316-6444 option 4.

Take advantage of the highly respected Child Care Center while exercising or attending a class or meeting. The Child Care room is designed with walkers in mind. Creative arts, games and activities are offered to children during the time they spend in the room. JCC Sports & Fitness members can reserve space one week in advance, while JCC members can make reservations 24 hours in advance. Dropins are accepted if space is available. The minimum stay is one hour/day and maximum stay is two visits/day with a three–hour limit. Waiting lists are utilized when the Child Care Center is at capacity. To avoid being charged for a “no show,” please call 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel your reservation. A parent or guardian must remain on the JCC campus. A 10-minute grace period is included in an hour reservation. Payment is required at the end of the care provided. First and birthday visits are free. The Child Care Center reserves the right to limit a child’s reservation time based on the child’s adaptation to the environment.

Nursery (303) 316-6301 6 weeks—walking $6.50/hour ($3.25/half–hour) $7.50/hour ($3.50/half-hour) Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis. JCC Sports & Fitness members are able to make reservations one week in advance. One to two attendants provide care for up to five babies during prime time. Nursery reservations are more restricted after 5 p.m. on weekdays, at all times on weekends, and if children within the nursery and the Child Care Center must be consolidated into one room during afternoons. Same-day reservations are available as staffing permits.

The ECC is a welcoming and inclusive community which is built on principles of trust and respect. Through the collaborative efforts of teachers, children, parents and staff, each individual is valued for his or her unique contribution to the community. We provide opportunities for everyone to learn, grow and develop a culture of mutual appreciation and respect. We believe that children are competent, curious, capable and deserving of individualized attention. Our curriculum is play-based, child-directed and emerges through the interests of each child.

Our Philosophy and Goals Our program is designed to help develop the whole child: socially, intellectually, emotionally and physically. We encourage the development of children’s inner resources: curiosity, creativity, imagination, independence, a love of learning and self–esteem. Learning to play cooperatively and building positive relationships with friends are fundamental components of our program. Our caring and experienced staff encourages joy from learning, enthusiasm for exploration and discovery, and a high regard for self and others. The result are an environment that offers one of the city’s finest early childhood programs.

Our Heritage We celebrate Jewish heritage and traditions through the observance of Jewish holidays. Jewish customs and values are incorporated into our daily experiences, building memories for young children through participation in Jewish rituals and age–appropriate songs and stories. The Jewish Early Childhood Education Initiative (JECEI) and An Ethical Start serve as the foundation of learning about values and ethical behavior and is a part of our classroom and parent learning communities. Teachers and parents work together to learn how the teachings of Pirkei Avot (Ethics of our Fathers) influence the way we treat each other and build our community. Fridays bring a special celebration of the Sabbath with school–wide group singing, snacks and Shabbat guests.

Curriculum The ECC offers a child–centered curriculum based on an emergent approach. Through careful observation and documentation of children’s interests and play, teachers create discussion topics that capture children’s natural curiosity. Our Judaic curriculum is interwoven in all that we teach. We strive to provide a happy and relaxed learning situation that emphasizes the process of learning and the pleasure of discovery. As part of our belief that learning takes place through play and “hands–on” experiences, children are encouraged to develop creativity and critical thinking skills through a balance of structured activities and interactive play.

Classrooms Our classroom design and play–based curriculum encourage children to make choices and to work independently and in small groups. Each room holds a variety of activity centers to stimulate self–initiated learning and socialization. Classrooms serve as an extension of the home environment to support the child’s feeling of safety and security. Developmental areas such as literacy and creative arts, math, problem solving and dramatic play are experienced through an environment which offers open-ended materials and equipment, allowing children the chance to use their imagination and creativity to foster their development.

Staff and Faculty

Parent/Toddler Preschool Class

Our staff is made up of warm, caring individuals who are professionals in their field. Our faculty participates in on-going training in early childhood and Jewish education. Through age-group teamwork, teachers learn from and support one another in applying best practices in the field of early childhood education. Our staff is enthusiastic, creative and eager to work with parents to enhance every child’s preschool experience.

Serving as an introduction to preschool, children 12–23 months experience creative arts, circle time, social interaction and more with the comfort of a caregiver nearby. Led by a teacher who facilitates ageappropriate activities, the class includes time away from parents and caregivers to help children learn independence. This program runs from 9–10:30 a.m. for a full academic year. Classes meet once a week on Tuesdays. Tuition is $123 per month/JCC member.

Family Partnerships We view parents as an integral partner in the child’s learning experience. Teachers work with parents to learn about children’s specific needs, as well as share information about the classroom experiences. Positive relationships with parents are fundamental in the work that we do at the ECC. The Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) brings together parents & teachers to enhance various aspects of our community through fundraising, special events, a family newsletter and parent education.

Openings are still available in ECC classes for the 2010—2011 school year. Please call Leah Joffe at (303) 316-6377 to register. ECC Registration Enrollment for the 2011–2012 school-year is determined by a lottery system. A $200 non-refundable enrollment fee and the last month’s tuition must accompany each registration application. Families register and pay on the day of each lottery. Payment plans are available for families who want to spread the total amount over a finite period of time. Tuition assistance is also available. Please email preschool@jccdenver.org to request information. The following dates show each tier of the lottery: Current ECC Families: Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 1 and 2, by pre-assigned lottery number.

JCC Members: (Must have joined the JCC by Dec. 31, 2010) Interested JCC members must either call (303) 316-6377 or email preschool@jccdenver.org no later than Friday, Jan. 28 to request a lottery number. Lottery numbers will be drawn on Monday, Jan. 31 for all JCC members who want to enroll for the 2011–2012 school year and will be notified of their number on that day. The JCC member lottery for ECC registration will take place on Monday, Feb. 7 at 8 a.m. by pre-assigned lottery number for qualifying members (those who were members before Dec. 31, 2010). Please call (303) 316-6377 if you have not received your lottery number by Feb. 1 or to schedule a tour.

General Public: Families wishing to register for the 2011–2012 school year can do so on Friday, Feb. 11 on a first come, first-served basis at the ECC front desk. Families who are not currently enrolled at the ECC may call or stop by the ECC to set up a tour and get registration/materials. Registration materials will be available by Monday, Jan. 3. We strongly encourage parents to tour our facility in advance of registering. Tours for new families are available and can be scheduled by calling (303) 316-6377. While breastfeeding is a natural process, it is mostly a learned art. The more you know the fewer challenges you might face. After attending a class you will be aware of the obstacles that can occur in the first days and weeks and know how to handle them. Instructor Donna Brown, R.N., IBCLC discusses the advantages of breastfeeding, how breast milk is produced and how to get off to a good start. We recommend taking this class in the last trimester of pregnancy.

Mishloach Manot for Purim Sunday, March 6, 3—5 p.m. South Location TBD FREE One of the four Purim mitzvot (charitable act) is “Mishloach Manot,” – gifts of food and drink – to ensure everyone has enough food and drink to enjoy the Purim feast. Children and parents will have an opportunity to work together to create gift baskets filled with hamantaschen, fruits, nuts, candy and juice to donate to a local non-profit organization.

Swim Safe Academy Parents must teach their children how to swim for their survival —Talmud Kiddushin 29B Swim Safe Academy is our small group swim lesson program. Using the Aquatic Concepts model of encouraging children to enjoy the water while steadily progressing in stroke technique development, students are grouped according to ability and progress through the program as they complete each skill set. In the winter and spring, group swim lessons are held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and on Sunday mornings. If you are unsure of your child’s swimming level, call or stop by the aquatics department and we’ll arrange to test your child.

Registration Class size is limited and students are enrolled on a first-come, firstserved basis. You must register for each session separately. Level 5/E: Sharks (5—12 years) In this level, swimmers are introduced to bilateral breathing. They also work on flip turns, and learn to put arms, legs and breathing together for the breaststroke and butterfly. This is a great class for your child to take if they have any interest in the Sea Stars Swim Team. They can brush up on all four competitive strokes, as well as work on some swim team techniques.

The JCC Sea Stars are more than just a swim team, we are a swim program. Swimmers of many ages and abilities, all with different dreams, have a place in our plan. 2011 JCC Maccabi Games and Artsfest: Israel July 24—Aug. 5, 2011 Teen Participant Ages: 14—17 years old (as of July 31, 2011) Participate in the program of a lifetime. Experience competition in an international setting, get a chance to tour Israel and make friends from all over the world! The first week athletes will participate in competition and over the weekend they will be hosted by families in our Partnership 2000 Region, Ramat Negev. The second week will be spent visiting the main tourist sites in Israel.

The following sports will be offered in Israel: Girls and Boys Basketball (all ages), Girls and Boys Soccer (all ages), Bowling, Swimming, Tennis and Table Tennis. Note: Participants who aged out of the Games this summer are eligible for Israel Maccabi Artsfest in Israel Sports not your thing, but you still want to go to Israel? Participate in JCC Maccabi Artsfest! This is an experience for Jewish teens who want a chance to expand and improve their artistic skill. Teen artists spend the majority of each day in master classes with professional artists-in-residence. They will prepare a final product for the closing event in which all participants will exhibit their pieces or perform. Outside of the intensive art workshops, Artsfest participants will join in the evening programs and Israel touring experience with other JCC Maccabi Games Israel athletes.

Denver Jewish Film Festival Teen Film The Trotsky Sunday, Feb. 13, 4 pm Shwayder Theatre and Phillips Social Hall Viva La’Revolution! Come view a film selected by a group of your peers which highlights themes relevant to your life. The Trotsky examines the power teens have within society to influence change. It deals with the notion self determination within the school system and shows how far one teenager will go to make a change. Following the screening there will be a speaker as well as a social event where you will have a chance to unpack the films and get to know teens from around the Denver area. Filmmaking Class Video is, undoubtedly, the pre-eminent storytelling medium of our age, particularly true of the generation now coming of age. In this dynamic workshop, teens will have the opportunity to make their own videos, discover their creative voice and use it to tell a story of their choosing. All equipment will be provided to guide participants through scriptwriting, storyboarding, directing, shooting, scoring and editing their video. Beginning students, as well as those with some filmmaking background, will find this to be a valuable and enjoyable creative experience with applications to school projects and presentations, as well as personal aesthetic expression. Please note: the Sunday session includes admission to the screening of the film festival’s Maharal (see film description on pages 31). Kabbalah Experience Kabbalah Experience Curriculum The study of Kabbalah is a life-long process of growth. Each class we teach stands on its own, though knowledge and application of Kabbalah progresses with continuing study. Our curriculum is an integration of textual study, discussion, self-exploration, and meditation. Advanced students focus on spiritual growth through text-based study or exploration of the authentic self. We apply Kabbalah concepts to your life to help change your awareness and impact how you see yourself and others. The first year curriculum consists of three classes, which are typically taught in sequential order: Soul, Space and Time. We recommend that new students start with Soul, but you can start with Space if the logistics of that class are better. Time is only offered in the spring. The ECC provides the same high quality of services for all children in a stable, nurturing environment. The Center promotes independence in children with special needs, while helping them gain self–esteem, confidence and social skills. Special needs facilitators, who receive training from both the JCC and outside consultants, help children to participate in every aspect of preschool activities.

Getting Started Package This package is for those who have never taken Pilates on a machine. Because of the unique movements and specialized equipment in the Pilates program, FUNDAMENTAL sessions are mandatory for participation on the Allegro. After mastering beginner classes, we encourage those ready for a bigger challenge to move up the Pilates ladder into Intermediate and Advanced Allegro classes. Scheduling additional private or semi-private sessions to learn advanced techniques with a Pilates personal trainer is required. The ability to master movements depends on the individual and there is no set time for moving up to harder classes. General classes may not be suitable for individuals with conditions or needs that may affect the ability to attend group classes. Those with special conditions should have a consultation to determine abilities.

Group Allegro Classes Enjoy a 50-minute workout session in an intimate class setting offering personalized attention. For a reservation in any Allegro Reformer or Tower/Chair class, participants can go on-line, sign in at the sports desk or call at least 24 hours in advance. Due to limited space, a 24hour cancellation notice is required for all participants in order to avoid being charged a “no show” or “late fee.” Packages of four classes are available for $48 ($12 per class) for S&F members. Participants are required to pre-pay for packages and have up to 60 days to use them. Please see the schedule for a detailed list of classes. Pilates Personal Training Our certified trainers offer individualized instruction in a one-on-one or semi-private setting. Whether your goal is to master your fundamentals, take your training to the next level, work on a specific need, or integrate sports specific cross-training by adding Pilates, our trainers will schedule sessions at convenient times for you. Both Allegro and Tower/Chair private and semi-private sessions are available.

Cancellation & No-Show Policy

We will not be selling single sessions for Pilates classes. Drop-Ins are considered classes that have not been registered for. Drop-Ins are $18 per class,will be billed directly to your account and are subject to the class being run.

Class Minimums We require a minimum of three people per class. If we are unable to reach the minimum of three participants that particular class will be cancelled. If you are registered for a class that is cancelled, you will be notified the day before (Sunday class participants will be notified on Friday).

Yoga A wide variety of yoga styles and levels are offered to suit the novice through advanced levels. Participants learn proper breathing techniques and full body alignment. Instructors guide each participant through a series of progressions to maximize individual results. Classes include Hatha, Iyengar, yoga flow, power yoga and yoga level one. We also now offer hot yoga.

Be a Part of Our 3rd Annual Indoor Ironman Triathalon From Saturday, Jan. 1—Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 Competitors: • Swim 2.4 miles or row 2.5 hours • Bike 112 miles • Run or walk 26.2 miles • Receive packets with more information and logs to track progress when you register at the Sports & Fitness desk. Each spin class counts for 15 miles or you can bike outdoors. You can run indoors or out, but using the elliptical trainer does not count. The indoor pool is 44 laps to one mile. There are two rowing machines upstairs in the cardio room. There will be a post race party in the main lobby on Tuesday, Feb. 1 with food and door prizes. About MACC MACC (Mizel Arts and Culture Center) illuminates the human experience through creative and cultural programs in the performing, visual and literary arts for the Jewish community and the Denver community at large. We strive to produce, present, exhibit, preserve and advance the arts, serving as a performance and exhibition venue, as well as an educational resource for people at every stage of life. MACC is one of the Rocky Mountain region’s premier arts organizations. Located on the campus of the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center, MACC is a separate non-profit organization guided by a mission that is focused specifically on arts and cultural programs. The MACC Name MACC changed its official name from the Mizel Center for Arts and Culture to the Mizel Arts & Culture Center and now uses MACC in everyday communications in order to help eliminate confusion between MACC and its fellow non-profit organization, the Mizel Museum. The Mizel Museum is a wonderful organization that offers a variety of programs but is a completely separate organization.

Gretel Bergmann, a gold medal contender at the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin. Responding to threats of an international boycott due to Germany’s treatment and exclusion of Jewish athletes, the Nazis bring Gretel back from England and force her to train for the German team. However, they ultimately do not plan to allow her to compete. The story focuses on the unlikely friendship that emerges between Gretel and the athlete chosen to replace her, two individuals whose lives are caught up in forces they cannot control. Not only are their lives at risk, but also the lives of their families in this period before WWII. Truth is stranger than fiction and this is an important and intriguing story that should be seen.

Hitler demands that the French government round up its Jews and put them on trains for the extermination camps in the East. The collaborators start to put the plan into effect and within a short time, 13,000 of Paris’s Jews, among them 4,000 children, will be rounded up and sent on a road with no return. The fateful date: July 16, 1942, 68 years ago. With a meticulously constructed script based on extensive research and first-hand accounts, Writer/Director, Roselyne Bosch, brings to the screen one of the most moving dramas of the year. In this dynamic workshop, teens will have the opportunity to make their own videos, discover their creative voice and use it to tell a story of their choosing. All equipment will be provided to guide participants through scriptwriting, storyboarding, directing, shooting, scoring and editing their video. Beginning students, as well as those with some filmmaking background, will find this to be a valuable and enjoyable creative experience with applications to school projects and presentations, as well as personal aesthetic expression. Please note: the Sunday session includes admission to the screening of the film festival’s Maharal (see film description on pages 31). The class will convene in the lobby prior to the film, view the film together and stay through the post film discussion. Educational Media Organization (EMO) is an organization founded by Denver-based filmmaker, Scott Kinnamon, whose mission is engaging and educating kids through video and digital media. EMO has worked in schools, community organization, film societies and workshops across the country, helping kids to find their own voice and enhance their ability to articulate their own narrative. Scott Kinnamon, EMO executive director, is a filmmaker who has worked in the film/video industry for more than 14 years in both Los Angeles and Denver. He has been involved in feature films, television, educational films, industrial films and commercials. He has extensive experience working in non-profit organizations, schools and commu-

nity-based organizations. Recognizing the potential for reaching at-risk kids through filmmaking, he created and co-taught the film program at Manual High School. The success of that endeavor sparked the creation of EMO, and the expansion into many new schools and organizations.

MACC Announces The Elaine Wolf Theatre

Dear MACC Patrons, I am overjoyed to announce that the Mizel Arts and Culture has received a significant gift to completely renovate the Shwayder Theatre. Our benefactor, Elaine Wolf, has been a long time supporter of many programs at the MACC (it should be noted that this gift comes directly from her and not from her foundation). The renovation will completely transform the Shwayder Theatre into an opulent, state-of-the-art facility allowing for both the continuation and expansion of our quality programs. The theatre is scheduled to receive the following: 1. A new Mezzanine level. This will add approximately 166 seats. This will include a stair and elevator in a new tower located in the front of the building (just to the right of the current theatre doors). 2. A new accessible row of seating. This will allow disabled and elderly patrons easy access to better seating without having to negotiate any stairs- as well as increase our handicapped seating capacity. The addition of this row will bring the lower level seating from 300 to 272. Our new total capacity for seating will go from 300 to 438. 3. A relocation of our current box office to the front of the facility and increased office space. 4. New signage & a theatre marquee above the doors leading to the theatre. 5. Significant renovation of our lobby. 6. A new stage floor,with permanent flooring for our 2 side stage entrances. 7. A new air conditioning system. 8. New sound system and improved acoustics.Improved lighting systems. 9. Improved lobby communication systems. 10. Improved video systems for internal monitoring and advertising. 11.An assisted listening system for our hearing impaired audience.

As you can imagine, we are extremely excited for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and deeply grateful to Elaine for her extraordinary generosity. Please note that we are open for business during our construction. We expect other theatre classes to continue this winter/spring with minimal disruptions. We will offer our teen production in the Pluss in the spring as usual. We expect to start construction in December 2010. The new theatre will be re-named “The Elaine Wolf Theatre” and we are planning a grand opening in April or May (stay tuned for more details). MEET THE ART FACULTY Toby Meyer studied painting at the University of Colorado, the University of Oklahoma, Loretto Heights College, Red Rocks Community College and with Edith Niblo. Her paintings have been collected in private and corporate collections in Australia, Israel, Germany, Ireland and Mexico, as well as throughout the United States. She has participated in numerous exhibitions and one-woman shows. Her work can be seen in Denver at the Madden Museum Of Art in Greenwood Village and at Signatures Fine Arts in Florida.

Carol Redmond holds a M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a B.F.A. from the Nova Scotia College of Art in Halifax. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in Colorado, Michigan, New Mexico, Arizona, and Ohio. She has taught art classes for the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, the Museum of Outdoor Arts and the Greenwood Village Arts-in-the Schools program. She has also coordinated outreach programs for the Oriental Museum at the University of Chicago. Carol has long been a favorite of our young art students who thrive in the creative and inspiring environment that she creates. Now, adults too can draw upon the strong academic background, many years in the classroom, and the wealth of professional experiences that provide the foundation for Carol’s classes.

Brighton Beach Memoirs is Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical play and the first chapter in what is known as his Eugene trilogy. Set in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, New York in 1937, the coming-of-age comedy focuses on Eugene Morris Jerome, a Polish-Jewish teenager who experiences all the traditional growing pains in his search for identity and meaning. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father and his worldly older brother, Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and Grandpa the Socialist and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states "if you didn't have a problem, you wouldn't be living here."

Biloxi Blues continues Simon's dramatization, begun in Brighton Beach Memoirs, of Eugene Morris Jerome's adolescence and young manhood. The sequel follows Eugene and his fellow recruits through basic training at an Army base in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1943. Eugene learns to cope with fellow soldiers from all walks of life, falls in love and matures, all while having to navigate around the eccentricities of his drill sergeant. The play, which won the Tony Award for best play, is both humorous and thought-provoking. The workshop production includes six fully-mounted public performances in the 100-seat Pluss Theatre (three for each play). Registration for this class will commit actors to full participation through May 22, 2011. Parents should note that the plays contain material that should be considered to have a PG-13 rating. There is no audition required to sign up for this production class. Students will be cast within the first few classes. Note that depending on class size, some students may be cast in only one show while some may be cast in both. Also note that if enrollment is low, we might decide to produce just one of the shows. Please read the rehearsal and performance schedule carefully to determine if you are able to participate. The winter and the early spring semester are scheduled like our traditional class offerings (one class meeting per week), while there are additional rehearsals in April and May 2011 immediately prior to the performances. Also note that there is a mandatory tech rehearsal on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8. Some scheduling conflicts, especially during the winter semester, can be accommodated, but if you will be out of town for the majority of rehearsals or for any performances, please do not enroll in this class.

PARENTS- DROP POLICY AFTER CASTING: Students will have four business days to drop this class after the posting of the cast list (which is traditionally on or before week three) with no penalty. After four business days from the public posting of the cast list, tuition will be non-refundable.

MEET THE FACULTY Emily MacIntyre (Production Manager, MACC) holds a B.A. degree in theatre from California Lutheran University. She spent her childhood and young adult years acting in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area. While working on her degree, she spent three years as a union stage-manager with Kingsmen Shakespeare Company in Thousand Oaks, CA. While in California, she directed/designed children’s pageants for local churches, worked crew for Young Actor’s Ensemble, taught Shakespeare camps, and acted in children’s theatre with Amgen’s Community Outreach Project and Pinki’s Playhouse. Emily moved to Denver in June of 2003, and she has been privileged to work with the children and staff of the Wolf Theatre Academy – stage-managing over 20 mainstage productions. Other MACC productions include Poignant Irritations, and Denver Children’s Theatre productions: The Last Paving Stone, Rikki Tikki Tavi, Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, Ramona Quimby, Sleeping Beauty and The Golden Goose, Cinderella. Emily spent one season co-directing/teaching with ‘Acting Up! Theatre Arts for Teens’ and is currently a guest artist at DSA teaching the stage management class. Kelly McAllister (faculty; Director, Brighton Beach Memoirs & Biloxi Blues Repertory) holds a BA in Theatre Arts from San Jose State University. Kelly is an actor, director, playwright and experienced theatre teacher. He has taught extensively for the Wolf Theatre Academy for the last few years and directed popular productions of Greater Tuna and The Complete Works of Shakespeare, Abridged for the Wolf Company Players. He has also taught for the Renaissance Program in Boulder. His bi-coastal credits include theatre classes in New York City for the Hope Theatre, Synapse Productions and Expanded Arts as well as California credits at Small World Schools, Children’s Theatre Workshop and The Western Stage. Kelly was a reviewer for nytheatre.com and won playwriting awards at the NY Innovative Theatre awards and the NYC International Fringe Festival. Kelly is also a former full-time school teacher. Kate Roselle (faculty) is a director and teacher who has been working with young actors in Denver since she arrived here several years ago. In Colorado, she has previously taught with the Denver Center Teaching Academy and the Arvada Center, and directed for Curious New Voices at Curious Theatre Company. Prior to her move, Roselle was Education Director at New Stage Theatre in Jackson, MS where she taught acting and workshop development, headed the school touring program, and developed the New Stage Summer Acting Intensive for students in grades 1-12. Some of her favorite directing credits include Wind in the Willows, Fiddler on the Roof, Jr, Charlotte's Web, Pinocchio, Shakespeare's Sweethearts & Swords, Pirates of Penzance, Jr. and A Christmas Carol. Roselle also worked extensively with the Mississippi Arts Commission as a grant panelist and workshop leader for their Arts in Education program. Crystal Verdon (faculty) holds a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Concordia University in Irvine, California. Crystal has taught extensively for the Wolf Theatre Academy for the last three years, since moving to Colorado from San Diego where she taught drama and specialty classes such as Shakespeare, Stage Combat, Movement for Actors, and Storydrama for almost a decade. While in Colorado Springs, she was a public school drama director and the Theatre Education Coordinator for the CS Fine Arts Center, expanding their educational offerings and writing museum theatre curriculum. She also teaches with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, the Arvada Center and has worked extensively as a performer in Denver and San Diego.

Katie Whitcraft (Assistant Production Manager, MACC) is thrilled to be returning to the Pluss Theatre for a fourth season as the production manager/ technical director. Katie served as technical director for last fall’s hit musical Fiddler on the Roof. Previously Katie stage managed Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and was the Assistant Stage Manager for the Denver Children’s Theatre production of Ramona Quimby. She also designed the set for The Mystery of Irma Vep at Backstage Theatre in Breckenridge. Katie attended Tisch School of the Arts at NYU and completed her Bachelors in Theatre as well as her MBA in Not-for-Profit Management at the University of Denver. Steve Wilson (Executive Artistic Director and Wolf Theatre Academy Director, MACC) holds an M.F.A. in acting from the National Theatre Conservatory in Denver and a B.F.A. in drama from the University of Southern California. He has been an artist-in-residence throughout the Cherry Creek and Denver Public School Districts, and was the high school theatre teacher and Performing Arts Chairman at St. Mary’s Academy for 10 years. Steve has directed productions at major theatre companies throughout the Denver area, including PHAMALy (Physically Handicapped Actor’s & Musical Artists League), the Bug Theatre Company, Town Hall Arts Center and The Theatre Group. He garnered awards for “Best Director” from both the Denver Post and Boulder Daily Camera as well as three Henry Awards (Colorado’s Tony Award) for “Best Direction of a Musical” for his productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Urinetown and Man of LaMancha for PHAMALy. Steve also received a Denver Post Ovation award as “Best Director of a Musical” for PHAMALy’s Joseph... and Side Show. His acting credits include numerous Shakespeare festivals, the Denver Center Theatre Company, Compass Theatre Company, the Denver Civic Theatre and the Theatre Group. Steve, who has overseen the development of three theatre companies, is currently the MACC’s Executive Artistic Director, the Director of the Wolf Theatre Academy, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Colorado Theatre Guild (former six term President) and the Scientific and Cultural Collaborative (current Board co-chair).

The amount of your membership fee in excess of $25 is tax deductible ($35 for individuals, $65 for mini-family, $75 for family, $5 for senior individual and $35 for senior couple).

All registrations are on a first-come, first-served basis, so please register early!

Phone Registrations

Memberships are available for individuals, couples, families, seniors, and senior couples (children 17 years or younger must join under a family membership.) Membership benefits include the opportunity to enroll in all center programs and activities at a discounted rate, special membership invitations and announcements, and mailed copies of seasonal activity guides. If you are not currently a JCC Member, please fill out the membership form in this guide and include it with your registration.

To register by phone, call the appropriate department (the MACC does not accept phone registrations). You must submit the waiver form below in order to participate in any class or program.

How to Register

Limited Space/Waiting Lists Please register early to secure your spot. Once a class fills, a waiting list will be created and you will be notified of any openings.

Class Confirmation

Mail-in or Walk-in Complete the enclosed registration form and include your check, money order or credit card payment for the full amount, plus the JCC Membership fee. Send your form and payment to the JCC, 350 South Dahlia, Denver, CO, 80246, or drop it off at the Center in a convenient drop-off box.

You will be registered for the class you requested unless you receive a call from us indicating otherwise.

Class Cancellations/Refunds All deposits and fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. The JCC and MACC are unable to credit or refund fees for absences or temporary withdrawals, unless the program is cancelled by the JCC or MACC.
