Spring 2026 Program Guide

Page 1

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

Dear Members and Friends,

Spring is a season of renewal, growth, and possibility, and there is no better reflection of that spirit than what is happening right now at the JCC. As we welcome the warmer months, I am proud to share our Spring Program Guide, filled with opportunities that bring our community together and help every individual thrive.

Thanks to the generosity of our members, donors, and supporters, the momentum of our Shaping Futures capital campaign continues to move us forward. I am happy to share that we have raised over $4 million in commitments and pledges towards our $7 million goal. This is a wonderful testament to the power of our community, but we aren’t at our goal yet. In this guide, you will read about a transformational $1 million gift to our capital campaign that is helping turn our vision for the future into reality while inspiring others to invest in the future of our JCC.

That generosity reminds us that every gift matters. Whether your support comes through a leadership gift, an annual contribution, a monthly gift through the CEO’s Chai Society, or ongoing participation as a member, you play an essential role in sustaining the programs and spaces that serve our community each day.

I invite you to consider how you can be part of Shaping Futures this spring. Together, we can ensure that the JCC remains a place to belong, grow, and thrive for generations to come.

With heartfelt gratitude,

May 7 - June 7

Thursdays 7:30pm | Saturdays 3:30pm & 7:30pm | Sundays 2:00pm

After following an antisemitic tweet aimed at him down an online rabbit hole, comedian Alex Edelman finds himself in an unexpected place: a meeting of white nationalists in Queens, face-to-face with the people behind the keyboards. What follows becomes the backbone of Just For Us—a show that is equal parts hilarious and gripping, and that traveled from small London theaters to a unanimously acclaimed run on Broadway.

In Just For Us, Edelman—who received a Special Tony Award® for the show— explores religion, cultural identity, assimilation, empathy, gorillas that speak sign language, and what it means to be confronted with hatred.

LEADERSHIP, LOVE, AND COMMUNITY: A TRANSFORMATIONAL GIFT TO SHAPE FUTURES

The Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo is proud to announce a $1 million gift to the Shaping Futures capital campaign in loving memory of Gordon and Gretchen Gross.

The gift is from the Gordon and Gretchen Gross Family Estate, as directed by trustees Debra Gross Weiner and Sandra (Sandy) Wolchok, daughters and step-daughters of Gordon and Gretchen, respectively. The gift fulfills Gordon and Gretchen’s lifelong commitment to strengthening Jewish life through the JCC and Camp Centerland. It also honors Sandra and Debra’s grandparents, Lester and Mickey Gross, who instilled a deep spirit of philanthropy in Gordon from an early age.

Gordon and Gretchen were pillars of the Buffalo Jewish community, deeply committed philanthropists, and devoted JCC leaders. Both served as Presidents of the JCC, helping guide the organization through years of growth with vision, generosity, and an unwavering belief in the power of community.

Gretchen shared a profound and lasting bond with the JCC and Camp Centerland. A past JCC President, longtime Chair of the Camp Committee, and recipient of the Ralph Kushner Volunteer Services Award, Gretchen’s optimism, energy, and leadership left an indelible mark. Her insight and dedication helped shape the success of the JCC and Camp Centerland for nearly two decades, and her passion for early childhood education and Jewish camping was unmatched.

Following her passing, Gretchen’s extended family and the JCC established a memorial endowment fund to provide camp scholarships and support the photography specialty camp. A memorial fireplace was dedicated in her honor in the Omanut building at Camp Centerland, which proudly bears her name and was a birthday gift from Gordon. Each summer, her joyful spirit is celebrated during Awesomesauce Day, a beloved camp tradition featuring special activities, tie-dye, and plenty of ice cream; some of Gretchen’s favorite things.

“Gretchen believed that camp and early childhood education could change lives,” said Sandra. “Her passion for the JCC was boundless, and our father shared that same commitment to giving back. This gift ensures that their values—and their love for this community—will live on,” added Debra.

Inspired by this legacy, Sandy and Debra made this transformational commitment to the Shaping Futures capital campaign to ensure the JCC continues to thrive for generations to come, and to inspire others to give with purpose and heart. The gift will provide critical endowment support for future programs, scholarships, and evolving community needs.

“Sandy and Debra’s generosity reflects everything Gordie and Gretchen stood for,” said Patty Simonson, Chief Executive Officer of the JCC. “This gift honors an extraordinary legacy of leadership and ensures that the JCC will continue to be a vibrant, welcoming home for Jewish life in Buffalo for generations to come.”
