August 31 – December 20, 2025
Dear Members and Friends,
As we turn the page into a new season, I’m filled with gratitude and excitement reflecting on the incredible success of our 80th Anniversary Celebration. Together with more than 250 members and friends of the JCC, we honored our past, celebrated our present, and boldly envisioned our future. Your presence and support made it a truly unforgettable milestone in our community’s journey.
This celebration also marked the official launch of our Shaping Futures Capital Campaign—an ambitious initiative to ensure that the JCC continues to thrive for generations to come. Through this campaign, we will strengthen our programs, enhance our facilities, and expand opportunities for everyone who calls the JCC home.
Our Fall Program Guide is a vibrant reflection of this mission. Inside, you’ll discover engaging opportunities for every age and interest—from enriching cultural events and family programs to energizing fitness classes and youth activities. Each offering is thoughtfully designed to foster connection, inspire growth, and bring our community together.
Thank you for being an essential part of this extraordinary community. Your engagement and generosity are the foundation of everything we do. I look forward to welcoming you to the Center this fall and sharing more about how, together, we are shaping a bright and inclusive future.

In 1950, as Senator Joseph McCarthy’s anti-Communist crusade gripped the nation in fear and silence, one voice rose in defiance. Senator Margaret Chase Smith—the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate—delivered her bold “Declaration of Conscience,” publicly condemning McCarthy’s reckless campaign. Her stand came at great personal and political cost, but endures as a rare act of moral courage.
McCarthyism disproportionately targeted Jewish artists, intellectuals, and activists—including prominent figures here in Buffalo. By opening our season with this powerful new play, the JRT reflects on a broader cultural reckoning through the lens of Jewish theater. Acclaimed actress Josie DiVincenzo returns to the JRT stage to portray a woman who dared to stand alone—and changed the course of American history.

Thank you to our sponsors

On July 24, we celebrated a huge milestone: 80 years of bringing people together, building community, and creating meaningful Jewish experiences. The celebration was filled with laughter, memories, and gratitude, as members came together to reflect on everything the JCC has meant to our region over the decades.
We looked back at our history and enjoyed special performances that highlighted the creativity and spirit of our community. From youth programs and fitness classes to cultural events and lifelong friendships, the night was a celebration of everything that makes the JCC a home away from home.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the generous sponsors who helped make our 80th Anniversary Celebration such a success. Your partnership not only elevated the event itself but also supports the JCC’s mission year-round. Because of your commitment, we are able to create meaningful programs, strengthen our community, and invest in the future! In Hebrew, “chai” means “life.” The word, which consists of the two Hebrew letters chet and yud is an important symbol in Judaism, often appearing on jewelry and in art. In addition, it is the numerical equivalent of 18. This is because each Hebrew letter has a numerical value, the sum of chet (numerical value of 8) and yud (numerical value of 10) is 18. As a result of its connection to the word for life, the number 18 is considered a special number in Jewish tradition.
For this reason, Jews frequently make gifts or charitable contributions in multiples of $18.

Starting at just $18 a month, Chai Society members will help us provide programs and services for infants, children, families, older adults, and everyone in between. A donation to the J immediately makes an impact today and for the future!

“It doesn’t matter what you have. What matters, is what you do with what you have.” – David Feuerstein, on what his father Irving taught him about the meaning of Tzedakah – or, charity, in Hebrew.
2024 To make a Life and Legacy gift or to learn more about the program please contact Alexander J. Eadie, Senior Director of Advancement, at 716.929.6258 or aeadie@jccbuffalo.org.

The JCC has received 67 Life and Legacy commitments as of January 15, 2025, totaling nearly $2.6 million in commitments. We are honored to be stewards of these community assets, and are incredibly grateful to the members of our community who have decided to generously commit to a gift in this way.

The Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Greater Buffalo has been the heart of the Jewish community in Western New York for over 80 years, welcoming individuals and families of all backgrounds.
We are a place of belonging, connection, and growth—promoting health, supporting families, and enriching lives across all ages. Our diverse programs include fitness and wellness, childcare, summer camps, cultural arts, Jewish Repertory Theatre, and community events rooted in Jewish values. Our foundation is built on three pillars:
People: Serving and connecting the community is our core mission.
Programs: From fitness to arts, our offerings are broad, engaging, and unmatched.
Purpose: Guided by Jewish values—kindness, education, justice, and inclusion—we aim to strengthen both Jewish and broader Western New York communities.
People. Programs. Purpose. These drive our vision to be the welcoming “town square” for community building and lifelong enrichment.

Thanks to an incredible donor commitment to kick off this effort, we will match dollar for dollar, every gift raised in 2025.
It is our responsibility (and honor) to pay that gift forward with all the generosity and support in our hearts. For almost 80 years, we have been able to weave the very fabric of the broader community through the lives we touch ... and, with your help, our work will continue for generations to come.
To support the campaign please contact Patty Simonson at psimonson@jccbuffalo.org or Alexander Eadie at aeadie@jccbuffalo.org.

Rosh HaShanah (literally, “Head of the Year”) is the Jewish New Year, a time of prayer, self-reflection, and t'shuvah. We review our actions during the past year, and we look for ways to improve ourselves, our communities, and our world in the year to come.

October 2
Yom Kippur means "Day of Atonement" and refers to the annual Jewish observance of fasting, prayer, and repentance. It is considered the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, and is the moment in Jewish time when we dedicate our mind, body, and soul to reconciliation with our fellow human beings, ourselves, and God.

October 7 & 8
Sukkot is one of the most joyful festivals on the Jewish calendar.
“Sukkot,” a Hebrew word meaning "booths" or "huts," refers to the Jewish festival of giving thanks for the fall harvest. The holiday has also come to commemorate the 40 years of Jewish wandering in the desert after the giving of the Torah atop Mt. Sinai.

October 14 & 15
A fun-filled day during which we celebrate the completion of the annual reading of the Torah and affirm Torah as one of the pillars on which we build our lives.

December 15 – 22
Chanukah is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights,” celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods. It commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after a group of Jewish warriors defeated the occupying mighty Greek armies.
