from the Helm
For many years, ‘From the Helm’ was a quasi ‘state of the union’ le er for our summer series where I would reflect on past events in the PBSC, while sharing exciting changes and opportunities in store for our teams in the new season to come. I’ve never been much of a rinse and repeat kind of a guy, and so, the le er ‘From the Helm’ eventually found it’s place on the shelf at the point and time I felt it was becoming more of a rubber stamp editorial piece in the magazine. Fast forward 10+ years and all that has evolved and changed with our sport and industry - it just seems appropriate to bring it out of retirement, if even for a minute.
In June 2025, we celebrated 30 years of the Saltwater Slam, the inaugural PBSC tournament that found its start in a small Pompano Beach tackle shop called Tackle Depot. The flood gates opened with so many memories looking back on all the great people that have been a part of these events over the years. Many of whom were kids and now have kids of their own. I am truly blessed to have shared so many life memories with our teams
over the years. I have o en said, “Years from now, you will never remember how much that winning check was for, but you will never forget the people you did it with and the special moments that took place doing it.” That’s the stuff that will keep you coming back year a er year, if you make that the priority, not the paycheck. The people, the relationships, the experiences, that’s truly where the life memories are made.
I stood in front of our first group of anglers 30 years ago promoting a ‘fishermen first’ format and that focus has never wavered. In the case of our industry, however, much has changed in the last 10 years. What was once the dream boat, a 25-foot center console with twin engines, is now eligible for the small boat division in the PBSC series. Let that sink in. It has been awe inspiring to watch the evolution of large center consoles over the past decade or more. Their carrying capacity, speed, range and overall fishability is a testament to the builders in the industry and their

from the Helm
commitment to raising the bar year a er year to meet the demands of a growing sport.
Unlike the billfish tournaments we run, the gap that exists in our summer series in terms of the boat sizes and specs, is much larger. A forty-five foot console might clear the inlet with a 20 foot skiff trailing behind, hoping to hitch a so er ride in their wake…. for a few hundred feet anyways, before they are out of sight, lol. As the sport has progressed and competition levels have increased, managing the tournament experience for all who participate in the PBSC summer series has been a mind bender at times to say the least. Nevertheless, the passion to continue delivering a ‘best in class’ tournament experience for all involved still burns as brightly today as it did on day one.
There is another fundamental component of these events, present since day one – COMMUNITY. The fabric that makes up our incredible fishing community here in Pompano Beach is woven by many different threads. Families, highly skilled fishing teams, casual fishing teams, newcomers to the sport and most importantly, kids! I have never been an advocate for participation trophies. I believe performance at the highest level should be rewarded as such. I want our youth to appreciate the process of working towards a goal and knowing that falling short isn’t failure. It’s a learning opportunity where they can apply what they learned, continue to improve and celebrate the small and large victories along the way that are a direct result of their work ethic and dedication. I also want casual fishing teams, more focused on the experience than the outcome, to know that we want and need them to be a part of these events.
It’s about the ENTIRE community, not one part of it. With that, I also believe that all tournament directors have a responsibility to manage their events for all participants. When decisions are made, rules are tweaked, prize structures modified, it’s important to recognize that the intent is to maintain a reasonable level of competition for all teams.
In that spirit, we always have and will continue to look for ways to make the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit as exciting as possible for our entire fishing community. It’s that commitment that brought forth breakout concepts like the KDW Jackpot, Pick 3, and the popular Semi-Pro Division while still maintaining the prestige associated with posting heavy weights at the scales and chasing meat fishing’s most prestigious title – the Showdown Crown. It’s the same spirit that will drive the larger payouts being offered in our ‘Big Fish’ Division as well as the new GROM SQUAD categories!
Like all things in life, success requires give and take, where compromise can lead to new opportunities and growth for all involved. But if we don’t lose sight of the big picture, and keep in mind that we are all working towards the same goal, to produce the best possible fishing events and experiences for our entire fishing community, then I think our ability to continue delivering the results we all want, has its greatest chance for success! But it will ALWAYS be, fishermen first, that I can guarantee! We look forward to joining the past, present and future of this amazing sport as we celebrate another memory making season of the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit!

A Champion Story Living Water / Makin Time
Leg 1 Saltwater Shootout
For the Living Water / Makin’ Time team, 2025 was one for the record books. As we set our sights on winning a 3rd set of rings, we decided to switch it up by adding Capt. Alex Burgess to the team. Steve Fishman and I had become friends with Alex, after buying bait from him over the past few years, and we knew he’d be a great fit with our tried-and-true crew that’s fished together for almost 20 years. Like our team, Alex had already won 2 rings fishing the series, so we were all geared up to chase our 3rd together!
Leg 2 Saltwater Slam
In the first leg of the PBSC series, the Saltwater Shootout, we were in between boats. I had just sold my 450Z Seavee and was in the process of buying a 390Z Seavee. Thankfully, Mike Benson, who’s fished with us for 20 years, had his 33 Conch ready to go. As we all know, you need to start off strong in the first leg because consistency is the key to winning the rings. A er prefishing on Friday, Alex had a good idea where we’d start fishing and right out of the gate, we were on a solid king bite. Most of the kingfish that we caught in the morning were on the kites and we were also lucky enough to catch a 20 lb cobia on a flatline. I avoided a few sharks on the cobia and Alex stuck that fish just in time. We knew at that moment that the Pick 3 (King, Tuna, Cobia) was in play because the tuna bite is always solid in May. Once we had a decent bag with our kings and cobia, we moved to tuna fishing. Chris Zislin had a solid tuna report, so we moved to that area and caught 2 nice tunas on the kites… Mike Fishman kept yelling how he was crushing tuna on wire…lol. We added 2 more tunas on flat lines and by the end of the day, our 225 lb. bag was good enough for 2nd place and the Pick 3. With a $97,138 payday, we were off to a solid start in the series.
The Slam in June proved to be challenging on our prefishing day, but Alex had a solid report from a few buddies that fished north of Jupiter on Friday. With Mike Fishman out for the Slam, we called Tony Melo to step in for this one. Tony had fished the Quest for the Crest series and the Ft. Pierce Kingfish tournament with us last year, so he had great chemistry with our team! On tournament morning we made our way north of the fleet to the spot Alex’s buddies did well. With only 2 other boats in the area, we were able to pick off a few nice fish early and had 100 lbs. with our 4 biggest kings… Chris Fishman and Chris Zislin had the hot hand that morning. A er we caught our kingfish, Capt. Ryan Goldman spoke to a buddy that was fishing south and had a solid tuna bite off Palm Beach, so we headed south to find a few. We had 2 tunas in the box pre y quick, however, the bite slowed and we knew we needed 2 more to have any chance at pulling off a win in the Slam. Our team always fishes hard till lines out, so Capt. Alex reset for a final dri and with 30 minutes le , we put 2 more tunas in the box at the buzzer! We knew we had around 170-180 lbs., but we weren’t sure if that would be enough for a win in June. A er all the boats weighed in, we were stoked to see that our 177 lbs. was enough to hold off Captain Carl Torresson and the Slob City crew and secure the win for us in the Slam.
Leg 3 Saltwater Showdown
When the Showdown rolled around, we had an 11 point lead over Mac Daddy for the series. But, August is typically tough and we knew that this series was far from over. We heard that Mac Daddy was prefishing all week so we decided to add Thursday to the prefishing schedule. Unfortunately, Thursday started off with some bad news when Jimmy Oliver called Alex while we were on our way north to let us know that his boat had sunk at the dock overnight. Jonah Bennet, who also fished with us in the Quest for the Crest series and the Ft. Pierce Kingfish tournament, and his crew on Finsanity met us at Alex’s slip to Continued on next page
A Champion Story
help get the boat tied off properly until help arrived with crash pumps. There are always obstacles to overcome in tournament fishing, and you have to be ready for curveballs. Once we dropped Alex off, we headed north to find some fish. A er fishing Thursday and Friday, we had a good idea where we’d start on Saturday. Typical for August, it was a grind on the ledge to find quality kingfish and we picked at smaller fish throughout the day. But, we kept working and found a few decent fish later in the a ernoon around 1:30. We heard that Mac Daddy had a few tunas, along with their kings, so we knew we needed
to add another species to the bag. We’ve always done well with wahoo in the Showdown ( we won the Crown in 2020 with an a ernoon Wahoo ), so Ryan fired out one of our last big baits. As Alex nudged out a li le deeper, Ryan had the right fish pile on his bait. A few minutes later, Mike Benson and Alex stuck a 48 lb. Wahoo and sealed the deal for the Showdown Crown! We were confident that we secured the rings with that wahoo, but once we realized that we had also won the Showdown with our 135.8 lbs. bag, we knew we accomplished something special. Our 2nd, 1st and 1st place finishes gave us 91 points for the series… a new Showdown Crown record.
Our team appreciates the grind along with the prestige associated with winning against the best meatfishing teams in South Florida. We are humbled to win our 3rd Showdown Crown, as we continue to chase Capt. Art Sapp and Native Son’s record of 5 series championships. This TEAM always steps up in big moments, and everyone contributes. From Capt. Alex keeping the bait fat and happy and working hard all year, along with Capt. Ryan and Capt. Mike Fishman prepping the gear and having the boat ready for action, this is truly a team effort. Coach Steve Fishman, Chris Fishman, Mike Benson, Chris Zislin and Tony T-Bone Melo are also always ready to contribute whenever and wherever needed. It was a great feeling to see all the hard work payoff with a record season in the PBSC series. These events are second to none and we look forward to chasing a fourth Showdown Crown in 2026.

"The Showdown has been our most consistent tournament from 2020 - 2025. And, we were blessed to pop bo les for a 3rd time in 2025. This win also helped us seal the deal for our 3rd overall Showdown Crown… the wahoo always seem to cooperate with us in August. We appreciate all the great teams that fish the series and push us to improve every year! Congrats to Mac Daddy and the other top teams that charged hard at the end. We still love the adrenaline rush of tournament fishing!"

"We had an awesome time competing in the series against the best Kingfish Teams in the country and were very fortunate to win top team/boat in our division! We strive to be competitive and we will never fail from a lack of effort!! The fishing this past season was tough at times but we try to capitalize on every bite because you never know if it’s the right one or not! We have a lot of friends that fish the series that have awesome teams and the communication between us is great!! Can’t wait to start trying for them rings soon, that would be an incredible feat to accomplish against the best fisherman on the east coast! The series is run very well and look forward to it every year!
Thank you very much Jamie and the rest of the tournament crew for all you do."
Can’t them be accomplish best east run forward Thank the for

Introducing the all new 400Z. The evolution of a legend - the 390 series becomes the all new 400Z. Bigger, with more of everything, the 400Z prioritizes cockpit space with more storage, and more available configurations than ever. The console is wide enough for 24” displays and features a raised helm pod for better ergonomics. There’s an optional second row of seating. The aft cockpit is much bigger and boasts two 100 gallon in-deck fish boxes, two standard corner live wells and a dedicated space for a Seakeeper. Fuel economy is unchanged, yet fuel capacity is up by 18%, as is the nautical range. That leaves only one question, where are you taking your 400Z?
