Summer is in full swing, and if you haven't made it out to the Joint Base San Antonio Recreation Park at Canyon Lake yet, what are you waiting for? Tucked into the Texas Hill Country between San Antonio and Austin. This 250-acre lakeside retreat has been one of the best-kept secrets for military families, retirees, and DoW civilians all season long.
The views alone are worth the drive. Clear water, shady oak trees, and rolling Hill Country scenery set the stage for whatever kind of getaway you're after. Whether that's an action-packed weekend on the water or a few quiet evenings watching deer wander through camp.
Speaking of the water, this is where Canyon Lake truly shines. The marina has you covered with pontoon
boats, fishing boats, kayaks, and paddleboards available to rent. Three swimming beaches, hiking trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds keep the whole family busy from sunup to sundown. And when the sun goes down the park offers shuttle service to live shows at Whitewater Amphitheater right down the road; one of the best outdoor music venues the Hill Country has to offer.

Great Food, Great Events, and Great Company at JBSA Clubs
Joint Base San Antonio clubs offer dining, entertainment, and event spaces for the military community. Whether hosting a wedding reception, retirement ceremony, or casual gathering, the JBSA-Lackland Gateway Club, Randolph Parr Club, and Randolph Kendrick Club provide welcoming venues for every occasion.
The JBSA-Lackland Gateway Club features the Lone Star Lounge. Guests can relax, socialize, and enjoy entertainment every Friday night. Friday Variety Nights run
from 4-10pm and feature live entertainment in a fun social setting. The club also hosts military ceremonies, private parties, and large events. Professional catering and customizable menu options are available for all types of gatherings.
At JBSA-Randolph, the Parr Club offers dining and flexible event space in one location. Guests can meet friends at the Auger Inn, take part in monthly karaoke nights, or unwind every Friday night. The club features seven event spaces. Including the Sky Lounge, and Randolph Room. These venues are
ideal for weddings, conferences, retirements, and squadron functions.
The JBSA Randolph Kendrick Club provides a relaxed atmosphere centered around Gil’s Pub. The popular gathering spot features high-definition TVs and a Jumbotron-style screen for sports fans. Friday social hours begin at 5:30pm and often include live DJs and entertainment. The club also hosts bingo nights, pool tournaments, and domino competitions that encourage community connections.

Staying active is a big part of military life. The fitness centers across Joint Base San Antonio make it easier than ever to stay mission ready. Whether you want to improve your health, relieve stress, or build better habits, JBSA fitness centers offer something for everyone. From modern equipment to group classes, sports programs, and special events. These facilities help service members, families, retirees, and civilians stay strong both physically and mentally. Across all major JBSA locations including Camp Bullis, fitness
centers are equipped with cardio machines, free weights, strength equipment, basketball courts, indoor tracks, and dedicated workout rooms. Many locations also offer racquetball courts, saunas, and outdoor sports areas. Group exercise classes such as yoga, cycling, circuit training, Zumba, martial arts, and more are also offered.
One of the biggest benefits of JBSA fitness centers is convenience. Several facilities provide 24-hour

access for registered users. Allowing shift workers, early risers, and busy military families to workout whenever it fits their schedule. The gyms are designed for every fitness level. From beginners learning the basics to experienced athletes pursuing advanced strength and endurance goals.
Summer is also packed with opportunities to get moving and compete. The JBSA-Lackland Gateway Fitness Center hosts the Red, White, and Boom challenge from July 1-30, followed by the Summer Workout challenge from August 1-31. Both events take place from 9am-2pm. At the JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Fitness Centers, participants can test their strength and skills during a tire flip
competition, dodgeball tournament, and pickleball tournament. Runners can also lace up their shoes for the Stars and Stripes 5K hosted by the JBSA-Randolph Rambler Fitness Center at Heritage Park.
The variety of facilities allows patrons to find a workout environment that best matches their fitness style, goals, and schedule. Fitness is about building confidence, reducing stress, improving overall health, and creating a lifestyle that supports long-term wellness.
Working out regularly provides major health benefits that go far beyond appearance. Exercise helps improve heart health, build strength, increase energy levels, and boost endurance. Physical activity can also lower stress, improve sleep, sharpen focus, and support mental wellness.
JBSA Fitness Centers also create a strong sense of community. Intramural sports, fitness challenges, fun runs, and group classes give people opportunities to meet others, stay motivated, and enjoy friendly competition. The JBSA-Randolph softball season came to an exciting close as teams competed in the final tournament, showcasing outstanding teamwork, sportsmanship, and competitive spirit throughout the season. Congratulations to all the players and teams who participated. JBSA Golf: A Great Place to Play and Improve Your Game
Golf is more than just a sport. It is a way to relax, spend time outdoors, and challenge yourself. At Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) golf is an important part of the community. Whether someone is new to the game or has played for years. JBSA Golf offers something for everyone.
JBSA is home to outstanding golf courses where players can practice,
compete, or enjoy a round with friends and family. The courses are known for their beautiful greens and challenging layouts. One of the best things about JBSA Golf is that it supports military members, retirees, families, civilians, and are open to the public. Anyone interested in playing can contact the course of their choice and request a gate pass for access to the installation. Golf can help people reduce stress and stay active. Many players enjoy spending a few hours on the course to relax and focus on the game.
Each course at JBSA offers different challenges. Some holes require accuracy, while others reward longer shots and smart course management.
For beginners, JBSA Golf is also a great place to learn. Lessons and clinics help new players understand the basics, including grip, stance, swing mechanics, and putting. Experienced instructors work with golfers of all skill levels to help them improve. Young players can also take part in junior golf programs that teach sportsmanship, patience, and confidence.
JBSA also offers practice facilities where golfers can improve their driving, putting, and short-game
skills. Tournaments are another exciting part of the JBSA Golf experience, bringing golfers together through friendly competition and community connection. This summer brings many events for golfers to enjoy. At JBSA-Randolph there is the Independence Day 2-Person Scramble on July 3. Independence Day Tournament July 4 and Reverse Par 3 August 16 at JBSALackland. Then our Red, White, and Blue 2-Man Scramble July 4 and Summer Ending 2-Man Alternate Shot Challenge August 16 at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston.

This summer, Joint Base San Antonio Libraries are helping families turn the page on boredom with reading programs, hands on activities, and events for all ages.

JBSA Outdoor Recreation also offers concession machines and inflatable bounce houses that are perfect

Participants can enjoy hiking adventures, river floats, fishing outings, and seasonal events designed to bring the military community together. These activities are a great way to meet new people, try new experiences and enjoy the outdoors without the stress of planning every detail. Many programs are designed for all skill levels, so beginners and experienced
outdoor enthusiasts can participate and have fun together. Outdoor Recreation staff members are also available to help customers choose the right equipment and provide helpful tips before each adventure.
