Brayden, son of Ernie Burns & Erin Berglund Burns, graduated from Mandeville High School. Running track since age 8, he first qualified for the Junior Olympics at just 10. He set multiple school records, including the LSU Field House Indoor 4x800 relay record, and individually set Mandeville High indoor & outdoor records in the 400m, 800m, and 1600m. In cross country, he recorded the 2nd-fastest state meet time in school history. After multiple collegiate track offers, Brayden committed to the University of LouisianaLafayette and will major in business with a concentration in finance.
Blake, son of Shalena and Brad Drury, attended Northlake Christian School from Pre-K3 through 12th grade. A multi-sport athlete, he played basketball from 5th–12th grade and football from 3rd grade through senior year, primarily at center. As a jr. and sr., he also played linebacker and tight end, earning All-District Second Team honors both seasons. As a senior, he added golf and helped lead the football team’s senior Bible study. Blake will attend Southeastern Louisiana University this fall and plans to continue on to Tulane Law School.

Rebecca, daughter of Stacy and Jay Silverstein, graduated from Christ Episcopal School this year! Throughout high school, she served as secretary of her class for all four years and participated in multiple clubs, including the biomedical club, the International Thespian \Society, and Mu Alpha Theta. She will attend Indiana University with a pre-med focus, majoring in human biology.
Cooper, son of Laura and Clark Todd, graduated from Mandeville High School. During his high school years, Cooper was a two-year letterwinner in football and a four-year letterwinner in baseball. This fall, he will attend Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Geaux Tigers!
Lucy, daughter of Christine and Tim Devraj, graduated from Mandeville High in the top 10% of her class and as an AP Scholar of Honor. She will be attending Trinity University in the fall and plans to major in psychology. At Mandeville High, she was a member of the National Honor Society and the Girls Varsity Soccer Team.

Sakina Shahid is the daughter of Dr. Muhammad Shahid and Sadia Shahid. A graduate of Mandeville High School with honors, she was actively involved in community service, the MHS Green Club, and completed an internship at a local optometry clinic. Sakina enjoys traveling, cooking, and playing pickleball with friends. She will attend LSU and major in Biology while pursuing her goal of becoming an optometrist.

Giabella, daughter of Jason and Gabriela Thompson, graduated from St. Mary’s Dominican High School. During her high school years, she was the Treasurer of the Pro-life Club, a member of Campus Ministry, and Retreat Team. She was also the Varsity Soccer Captain in 2025. MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR: senior spotlight
Brayden Berglund
Brayden’s journey in athletics began at the tender age of eight, when he first laced up his running shoes alongside his stepdad. While he explored various sports during his childhood, track and field emerged as his true passion. It was his AAU coach, Miguel, who first recognized Brayden’s innate talent and potential, encouraging him to fully embrace his abilities.
At just ten years old, Brayden’s hard work paid off when he qualified for the Junior Olympic teams, marking a significant milestone in his budding athletic career. Upon entering Mandeville High School, Brayden’s new track and field coach, Anthony Pequeno, also saw something special in him, pushing him to reach greater heights. Throughout his tenure at Mandeville, Brayden dominated the district competitions, clinching victory every year.
However, it was during his junior year that Brayden truly distinguished himself from his peers. Not only did he begin shattering high school records, but he also set new state records. In a remarkable showcase of his talent, his 4x800 relay team established a new indoor record at the LSU field house and set a state record with a breathtaking time of 8:01, culminating in a state title win. Just an hour later, Brayden triumphed again in the 800m, securing another state championship. By the end of his junior and senior years combined, Brayden had set an astonishing seven new high school records.
Yet, what many may overlook is that track and field is inherently an individual sport that demands unwavering dedication. With cross-country in the fall, indoor track during the winter, and outdoor track in the spring and summer, Brayden dedicates a rigorous ten months of the year to training.
This commitment necessitates a carefully structured regimen focused on adequate recovery, strict nutrition, and quality sleep—elements essential for sustaining the physically demanding nature of the sport. His parents recognize that while the accomplishments shine brightly, it is the relentless effort and discipline behind the scenes that truly fuels Brayden’s success.
Beyond school competition, Brayden continued testing himself on bigger stages, qualifying for national events hosted by Nike and New Balance. And outside competition, Brayden embraces adventure and lives with the same energy he brings to the track. He enjoys spending time on the water—boating, riding jet skis, and deep-sea fishing—and has even earned his scuba certification. Whether traveling to new destinations or hitting the slopes to snowboard, he thrives on challenge, movement, and experiences that push him beyond his comfort zone.
After receiving multiple collegiate offers, Brayden committed to University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he will continue his athletic career while majoring in Business with a concentration in Finance.

Creed Berglund sanctuary residents THE Berglund family pet
Sometimes the most important family members arrive completely unplanned.
That was the case for Creed, a yellow Lab mix who wandered into the Berglund family’s lives on a cold January evening in 2018—and never left.
At the time, the family in Hammond had been considering a second dog to keep their silver Labrador, Apollo, company. Dad Ernie wasn’t fully convinced.
Then fate stepped in.
While Ernie was out of town for work, son Brayden asked his mom, Erin, to join him for an evening training run before track season. It was dark and cold when a bone-thin yellow dog appeared. At first, they were unsure of him and started heading home, but he followed.
Once they reached the garage light, it was clear he wasn’t aggressive, just severely malnourished. Erin brought him food, and Brayden cried while watching him eat. They made him a bed from towels so he could stay warm through the night.
As Erin recalls, “Ernie thought we were making it up, that this dog didn’t ‘just happen’ to follow us home.”
By morning, he was still there.
While Ernie may not have been convinced before, he lovingly named their new dog Creed, inspired by his favorite movie, Rocky.
Creed’s exact age is unknown, though he is believed to be
at least two years older than Apollo, who turned 10 in June. He looks like a Yellow Labrador Retriever but is suspected to be mixed with a Louisiana Black Mouth Cur.
From the start, Creed acted like he belonged.
A sweet, gentle giant, he believes every person he meets exists to pet him. If they don’t, he’ll sit on their feet until they do. His favorite person is Erin—his “Mama”—though he treats everyone like part of his fan club.
He is also highly social. More than once, Creed and Apollo have escaped to “explore,” leading the family to meet many neighbors in The Sanctuary. The dogs are now known for showing up at neighborhood gatherings, especially pool parties, as if invited.
Erin says, “I truly believe there’s a person in there. He maintains intense eye contact like he’s having a conversation, and he’s the best snuggler.”
Creed’s story later became more serious when he was diagnosed with lymphoma, not once but twice. He is currently finishing his second round of chemotherapy, and the family calls every day with him a gift.
They are grateful to Dr. Lyons at MedVet and Dr. G and her team for providing exceptional care and supportive herbal supplements throughout his treatment.
Looking back, the family sees it clearly, a starving dog followed them home and ended up exactly where he belonged. And they’ll tell you they were the lucky ones. “We didn’t choose Creed. He chose us.”

Three-Peat: A Championship Soccer Culture at St. Scholastica Academy
State Champions
Winning one state championship is an accomplishment. Winning three in a row is the result of a culture built on discipline, accountability, and trust. In just his fifth season as head coach of St. Scholastica Academy soccer, Glenn Benjamin, whom the team calls Coach Benji, led the Doves to their first-ever three-peat, the program’s 10th state championship, and a season that earned him Division II Coach of the Year honors and a spot as one of eight finalists for National High School Coach of the Year.
For Coach Benji, the championship began with the players’ mindset. “This year was truly special because of the commitment, resilience, and chemistry these players showed from day one,” he says. “Every player bought into the team-first mentality. It wasn’t just about talent—it was about heart, discipline, and believing in one another.”
His expectations were straightforward. “Playing time is earned. It’s not given.” With contributors ranging from eighth graders to seniors, every player had to earn her place. The team’s depth also allowed Benjamin to rotate lineups, play multiple formations, and adapt to different opponents throughout the season.
The results spoke for themselves. St. Scholastica finished the regular season 11-5-6, allowing just 15 goals while recording 13 shutouts. In the postseason, the Doves elevated their game, scoring 21 goals while surrendering only one, forcing 108 offsides, and adding three more shutouts on their way to another state title.
Senior captain Reese Dantin says the team’s greatest strength was its resilience. “The season consisted of a lot of very high moments, but also a lot of low moments,” she says. “The way the team adapted to those low moments is what made this season extraordinary.”
Sophomore Molly Montgomery, who scored one of the goals in the state championship match, credits Coach’s belief in the team for keeping everyone focused. “We were on the wrong track, and because of Coach Benji and his belief in us and our capabilities, we pulled it out in the end,” she says. “We worked for the three-peat all year, and we won because of our mental game as much as our physical game.”
Coach agrees that mental toughness defined the season. “We battled tough opponents, pressure, adversity—we even battled the flu,” he says. “Somehow, we still showed up the next day and played like champions.”
Freshman Lilette Ferrand quickly discovered why the program has become one of Louisiana’s best. “Our team is like a family,” she says. “We have strong friendships, trust each other, and always encourage one another both on and off the field.”
That chemistry extended beyond the field with team-building experiences, including a bowling outing at Paradise Alley in Mandeville, strengthening the bonds that fueled the team’s success.
The Doves also collected an impressive list of individual honors. Molly Montgomery was named District Offensive MVP, Bailey Tardo earned District Overall MVP, and Adalynn Hebert was named District Co-Defensive MVP and St. Tammany Farmer Defensive Player of the Year. Five players earned First Team All-State honors, while Reese Dantin and Addison Foret were selected to the Second Team.
Coach Benji shares that this win was especially sweet because it gave the Doves three straight championships while winning titles in both Division I and Division II. Resse Dantin reflects on her extraordinary senior year, adding that “the true championship came through the relationships we made throughout the season and the work we put in to reach that goal.” Coach Benji just returned from attending the National High School Athletic Coaches Association banquet in Iowa, where he was one of eight finalists for national high school coach of the year, a well deserved honor.
For St. Scholastica Academy, the three-peat wasn’t just another championship. It was the reward for a team that trusted its coach, believed in each other, and embraced the process every step of the way.
