Pineapple Ave, Suite 111 Sarasota, FL 34236 941.260.9951 When Hal and Evelyn Davis retired to Sarasota in the late ’70s from New York where he had been Vice President of Gray Advertising and publicist for Benny Goodman, they found opera, theatre, symphony and a world-class museum - but no jazz. Missing the music they loved, they invited friends in Pelican Cove to listen to jazz records. But, they yearned for live music so Hal called on his good friend, legendary guitarist, Bucky Pizzarelli, to play for the newly founded Jazz Club of Sarasota’s first member concert in 1980. Two-hundred and eighty people came to Holley Hall and Bucky played in return for airfare. He stayed at the Davis home and even brought along his 20-year-old son John, who is starring in this year’s Festival. That was the beginning of the Jazz Club which has been going strong for 42 years, presenting legendary jazz musicians, such as David Brubeck, Benny Goodman, George Shearing, Bob Haggart, Zoot Sims and NEA Jazz Master Dick Hyman. Hal was the first president, succeeded by Jerry Roucher and followed by a string of capable leaders. It is one of the largest jazz clubs in the U.S., producing a major festival and over 75 events a year. Under the leadership of Ed Linehan, the club has created new events, diversified offerings and is keeping America’s original art form a thriving force in Sarasota and the U.S. By Nancy Roucher
BIGGER and BETTER JAZZ CLUB! It feels so good to be back with our new season of great performances outlined here in our 2021-2022 program. However, we are not satisfied by simply resuming our past efforts. The JCS Board recently approved a Five Year Strategic Plan that aims to reinvigorate and secure the club’s core purpose – to preserve and promote jazz. The full plan will be published and distributed soon, but here are a few highlights that go into effect this year: •
Performance programming will be scheduled throughout the full twelve-month calendar. In past years the events have begun in October and ended in May.

The annual Sarasota Jazz Festival will continue in March, but will be expanded to include more events and major headline performers.
•
The beloved and honored Giving Hunger The Blues charity music festival will now be produced and promoted by the Jazz Club; and,
•
The Jazz club will be producing more special events and developing new music series.
The overarching dual purpose of the plan is to expand the opportunities to enjoy and appreciate our music and to secure the future of the Jazz Club for another 40 years! With your support we will achieve these goals.

This year The Jazz Club is fortunate to have Shelly Berg, a Steinway piano artist and five-time Grammy-nominated arranger, orchestrator, and producer as director of the Sarasota Jazz Festival. Berg’s extensive background includes critically acclaimed album projects. He earned three Grammy nominations in the Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s) category with jazz singer-lyricist Lorraine Feather and international superstar Gloria Estefan, and a fourth Grammy nomination as co-producer of Gloria Estefan: The Standards (Sony). He earned his fifth Grammy nomination as co-arranger of “I Loves You Porgy / There’s a Boat That’s Leavin’ Soon for New York” from the album Rendezvous. Recent projects include recording and/or performing with Tony Bennett, Seal, Lizz Wright, Andra Day, Clint Holmes, Renée Fleming, and Arturo Sandoval. He is also the host of a monthly radio show Generation Next on Sirius XM, music director of The Jazz Cruise, and artistic advisor for The Jazz Roots series at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami. An award-winning educator with 40 years of leadership in higher education, Shelly Berg is Dean and Patricia L. Frost Professor of Music at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. He was previously the McCoy/ Sample Professor of Jazz Studies at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California and a past president of the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE). In 2003 he was honored as Educator of the Year by the Los Angeles Jazz Society and in 2002 received the IAJE Lawrence Berk Leadership Award. hrough our scholarship program, we assist students to attend a four-year undergraduate college or university. These students are all academically and musically gifted and major in jazz music. This year, thanks to the generosity of members and friends, in addition to usual scholarships we were able to award three special scholarships: The Matt Bokulic Scholarship, The Consistent Excellence Award, and The Blake Bennett Scholarship.
The Jazz Club of Sarasota helps turn high school kids into young adults pursuing a career in jazz!
The Matt Bokulic Scholarship honors a musician who has been admired for many years by jazz fans across southwest Florida. Matt’s family, friends and combo partners established this memorial scholarship and will fund it annually; The Jazz Club will administer it. Since Matt was helpful and thoughtful of other musicians, the student selected to receive this award each year will have shown that they offer guidance, help, and are supportive of their colleagues. The Consistent Excellence Award honors a student who has been with us for four years. As he enters his senior year, we felt that we had to honor his high personal standards and steady, outstanding progress throughout his college career. David Mason’s playing epitomizes polish and taste. It was our pleasure to grant this award to David Mason.

The Blake Bennett Scholarship is awarded this year in memory of a scholarship student, an excellent trumpet player, and a fine young man who was respected and admired by all. He tragically died in a traffic accident only a few months after his fourth year as one of our scholars. Jazzlinks azzlinks is getting ready to launch its seventh year of bringing history to life for high school students in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. The Jazz Club’s collaboration with Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) and Sarasota County Schools illuminates important aspects of African American History through jazz music, the lives of performers and historical events.
Funded in part by a grant from the Florida Arts Council, the project includes a teacher workshop, classroom experience and performance in each participating Jim Weaver, Director school. Nancy Roucher, coordinator of Jazzlinks, is working with WBTT’s new education director, Jim Weaver, who is revising the script and preparing to cast performers who will go into rehearsal later this fall. Weaver was theatre director for Kent State University at Stark in Ohio. He has a Master of Fine Arts in acting and is an experienced director, including stints at WBTT, where he is the director of the season’s opening show, Eubie. His work has been seen at Lincoln Center, American Stage Company, Bay Street Theatre and several international theatres. He is also an actor, singer and choreographer who has performed on Broadway, Europe and internationally. Weaver has created an original short play for the classroom experience, using Raps to introduce the struggle for Civil Rights highlighting historic events like lunch counter protests and bus boycotts, plus significant figures in U.S. history and famous jazz performers. This will spark a 28

discussion between students and actors. The culminating performance, conceived by Nate Jacobs, founder and artistic director, will focus on famous jazz performers, including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Because of Covid and the school district’s current limit on visitors, the teacher workshop and the classroom experience may occur virtually. Hopefully, conditions will improve and the performance will be “live” at each school. It will feature roots of gospel, spirituals, jazz and blues connecting the success of African Americans during the Harlem Renaissance and the aftermath of the Civil War and Reconstruction. Jazzlinks was originally created as a 5th grade curriculum that was implemented in all Sarasota elementary schools in the early 2000’s. In 2013 the state curriculum changed the focus of African American history to high schools. The idea occurred to transform the original Jazzlinks unit into a dynamic experience for 11th grade students and the result is a “marvelous partnership.” Jazzlinks was a featured virtual presentation at the Florida History Conference this summer led by Sarasota School’s Specialist in Social Studies, Bernadette Bennett. High School Band Competition CARES highlight of our annual Jazz Festival is the recognition of the area’s top three high school jazz ensembles. In 2019, we recognized Pine View, North Port and Sarasota High Schools for their excellent jazz band performances. The thirteen high schools in Sarasota and Manatee counties are being invited again this year to compete for the opportunity of performing at a Festival concert. The competition will take place on a weekend in January 2022. Members of The Club and the general public are invited to attend the competition, which is a wonderful opportunity to see and hear the incredible musical talent of our high school students. Three certified band competition judges will critique each band and make a final determination of ranking the bands. The Club will offer cash prizes of $3,000 to first place, $2,000 for second, and $1,000 for third. These cash prizes are utilized by the winning high schools to purchase instruments, buy new musical arrangements and otherwise enhance the schools’ jazz programs. The top bands will also be offered the opportunity to perform at the Jazz Festival or another Jazz Club event. The winning students also receive admission to one of the evening festival concerts. The entire jazz community benefits from the participation and attendance of our next generation of jazz performers. Satchmo Awards Named in honor of
Louis“Satchmo”Armstrong
THE SATCHMO AWARD The Jazz Club of Sarasota created its most prestigious honor, The Satchmo Award, in 1987 to honor those who have made a “Unique and Enduring Contribution to the Living History of Jazz...Our Original Art Form.” The Harold and Evelyn R. Davis Memorial Foundation sponsors The Satchmo Award, which was created by Hal Davis, founder of the Jazz Club of Sarasota. The Satchmo commemorates the contributions of jazz great Louis Armstrong, nicknamed “Satchel Mouth” or “Satchmo.” The award was designed by Frank Eliscu, a sculptor and art teacher who also designed the Heisman Memorial Football Trophy. Stay tuned for information on our 2022 recipient and presentation. The Jazz Club of Sarasota, founded in 1980, is dedicated to preserving, promoting, presenting and educating people about jazz, America’s original musical art form.
