From the President of the Jazz Club In 2025 the Jazz Club of Sarasota (JCS) will celebrate the 45th Anniversary of its founding by Hal Davis. As we approach the end of the 2024 calendar year, I’ve been thinking a lot about our membership demographics and what we can do to better serve this group. One of the published objectives of the JCS is to keep jazz alive. But what version of jazz do we support and administer CPR to? Jazz itself has changed tremendously in the last 45 years. Back in the swing and big band era of the 30’s and 40’s folks went to night clubs and danced to the big bands and their vocalists. When Jazz landed in the nightclubs of New York and Chicago there were no dance floors. The music was played by quartets and trios. That’s when it became apparent that Jazz was to be listened to. Especially, the rapid fire, never-the-same-way twice offerings of Miles Davis (no relation) and Charlie Parker and many others. By the 1950’s Jazz had separated itself from popular music. Rock and Roll and later on, Smooth Jazz were more than ready to fill the void with music that you could actually dance to and songs with lyrics you could hum. The JCS recognizes that our membership demographic is rapidly changing. To acknowledge this fact, I’m going to ask the JCS Music Committee to offer up a few more Big Band performances. When Hal and Evelyn Davis retired to Sarasota in the late ’70s from New York where he had been Vice President of Gray Advertising and publicist for Benny Goodman, they found opera, theatre, symphony and a world-class museum - but no jazz. Missing the music they loved, they invited friends in Pelican Cove to listen to jazz records. But, they yearned for live music so Hal called on his good friend, legendary guitarist, Bucky Pizzarelli, to play for the newly founded Jazz Club of Sarasota’s first member concert in 1980. Two-hundred and eighty people came to Holley Hall and Bucky played in return for airfare. He stayed at the Davis home and even brought along his 20-yearold son John, who is a major jazz performer today.
That was the beginning of the Jazz Club which has been going strong for 44 years, presenting legendary jazz musicians, such as David Brubeck, Benny Goodman, George Shearing, Bob Haggart, Zoot Sims and NEA Jazz Master Dick Hyman. Hal was the first president, succeeded by Jerry Roucher and followed by a string of capable leaders. It is one of the largest jazz clubs in the U.S., producing a major festival and over 75 events a year. Under the leadership of Ed Linehan and Nik Walker, the club has created new events, diversified offerings and is keeping America’s original art form a thriving force in Sarasota and the U.S. By Nancy Roucher

Marcus Miller has been dubbed one of the most influential artists of our time. At the top of his game for over 30 years, he is a two-time Grammy award winner, (U.S.), winner of the 2013 Edison Award for Lifetime Achievement In Jazz (Holland), winner of the 2010 Victoire du Jazz (France) and in 2013, was appointed a UNESCO Artist For Peace. His characteristic bass sound can be heard on a limitless catalog of musical hits from Bill Wither’s “Just The Two Of Us” , to Luther Vandross’ “Never Too Much”, to songs from Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, Herbie Hancock, Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, George Benson, Elton John and Bryan Ferry to name a few. With his distinctive style - a unique combination of funk, groove, soul and pure technical skills - Miller has been referred to as one of the most significant bass players in jazz, R & B, fusion and soul. Multifaceted American jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen is one of his generation’s pivotal figures in music and the related arts. Leader of the Emmet Cohen Trio and creator of the Masters Legacy Series, he is an internationally acclaimed jazz artist, a dedicated educator, the winner of the 2019 American Pianists Awards, and a finalist in the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. Cohen headlines regularly at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Village Vanguard, and Birdland, and has appeared at the Newport, Monterey, and North Sea jazz festivals. His artistry has taken him to venues and festivals in over 30 countries. nfused with vibrant Latin rhythms and a contemporary edge, the Tampa Bay-based Latin Jazz Ensemble stands out as one of Florida’s premier Latin jazz bands. Founded by the esteemed Cuban bassist and composer Mauricio J. Rodriguez, the ensemble burst onto the scene during the St. Petersburg Latin Jazz Festival in July 2021 with the release of Rodriguez’s captivating album, “Luz.”

Drummer Thomas Carabasi formed the Samba-Jazz group in 2005, following his time playing with Brazilian pianist Manfredo Fest and traveling to Brazil to immerse himself in the music. His broad jazz experience also includes years working with the legendary Kenny Drew, Jr. and other notable jazz artists. The Thomas Carabasi Quintet includes James Suggs (trumpet), Jeremy Carter (saxophone), Patrick Bettison (piano), Alejandro Arenas (bass) and Thomas Carabasi (Drums).

James Suggs is one of the finest jazz trumpeters and most in demand musician in the Bay area. He has performed critically acclaimed tribute shows to Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and Harry James.
Patrick Bettison is a multi instrumentalist and composer with a jazz background. He is mainly known for playing Electric Bass, Chromatic Harmonica and Keyboards.
Alejandro Arenas is the bass player for the group La Lucha who has received many local awards.
Sax man Jeremy Carter who is known for finding the sweet spot between Jazz and Soul..

Jazzlinks CARES azzlinks is getting ready to launch its ninth season of bringing history to life for high school students in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. The Jazz Club’s collaboration with Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) and Sarasota County Schools illuminates important aspects of African American History through jazz music, the lives of performers and historical events. Funded in part by a grant from the Florida Arts Council, Division of Cultural Affairs, the project includes a teacher workshop, classroom experience and auditorium performance in each participating school. Nancy Roucher, coordinator of Jazzlinks, is working with WBTT’s education director, Jim Weaver, who authors the script, casts and rehearses the performers.

This year’s focus will be on The Harlem Renaissance and the legendary stars who made this a significant part of American history. WBTT actors will portray Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday, Ethel Waters and Duke Ellington to tell the story of the joy of the Harlem Renaissance, in contrast with the terrible conditions in the South - lynchings, discrimination and heartbreak.

Teachers will have a curriculum to guide student learning and will participate in the classroom experience before attending the performance in each school’s auditorium. Jazzlinks was originally created as a 5th grade curriculum that was implemented in all Sarasota elementary schools in the early 2000’s. In 2013 the state curriculum changed the focus of African American history to high schools. The project was dormant for several years until I was asked to help WBTT form an education program. “A light went on in my brain and I realized that I had the content and WBTT had the talent! That was the beginning of the “marvelous collaboration” between The Jazz Club and WBTT! by Nancy Roucher 27

Scholarship
For more than three decades The Jazz Club of Sarasota has been awarding financial support to deserving students studying jazz music. Students apply from Sarasota and surrounding counties. This past year The Jazz Club awarded 14 scholarships with 4 scholarships for high school students attending specialized summer programs in jazz. Three special scholarships were awarded: The Matt Bokulic Scholarship, The Blake Bennett Scholarship and the Robert H Weitz Scholarship. The Matt Bokulic Scholarship honors a musician who has been admired for many years by jazz fans across southwest Florida. Since Matt was helpful and thoughtful of other musicians, the student selected to receive this award will have shown that they offer guidance, help, and are supportive of their colleagues. Ben Dunham, a senior at the University of Miami Frost School of Music received The 2024 Matt Bokulic Scholarship. Ben was drawn to the vibraphone due to the way it uses melody, harmony and rhythm. His goal is to combine careers in composition and performance as a jazz vibraphonist.

The Blake Bennett Scholarship is awarded in memory of a scholarship student, an excellent trumpet player, and a fine young man who was respected and admired by all. He tragically died in a traffic accident only a few months after his fourth year as one of our scholars. This year The Blake Bennet Scholarship was shared between two deserving individuals Jayden Titus and Alex Malkovich. 28

Jayden Titus is a sophomore music major at the State College of Florida. A trumpeter, Jayden says he knew as a kid that he would pursue music. He aspires to a career in jazz performance.

Alex Malkovich plays the guitar and tenor saxophone. He is a student at St. Petersburg College. Alex hopes to have his own band and be a touring musician.
The Robert H Weitz Scholarship is in the memory of Bob Weitz, past chairman of the Jazz Club scholarship committee. For over 14 years, Bob spent many happy hours attending musical events at high schools across SW Florida as he searched for students showing exceptional talent. He encouraged them to Alex Malkovich focus their interest on jazz and he recommended that they apply to the Jazz Club for scholarships. A dear friend and champion for the kids. Colin Leonard, a multi-instrumentalist, playing the flute, saxophone and clarinet is this year’s recipient of The Robert H Weitz Scholarship. He is a senior at Oberlin Conservatory of Music majoring in Jazz Performance Studies. Colin plans a professional career in music, combining teaching, composing, and performing.

High School Band Competition High School Jazz Bands Compete for Top Three Prizes
The Jazz Club of Sarasota has always sought to encourage and foster the development of student jazz musicians. The thirteen high school jazz programs in Sarasota and Manatee Counties are being invited to compete. The competition will take place on Sunday, April 13, 2025. All Club members, as well as the general public, are invited to attend the competition to hear for themselves the incredible talent of our high school students. Our professional judges will select the top three jazz bands. The top band will receive an award of $3,000.00, second place will receive $2,000.00 and the third-place finisher will receive $1,000.00. Be on the lookout for additional details of the upcoming competition and plan to come out and support the great budding high school jazz performers in Sarasota and Manatee Counties.

THE SATCHMO AWARD The Jazz Club of Sarasota established the Satchmo Award, its most prestigious honor, in 1987 to honor those who have made a “Unique and Enduring Contribution to the Living History of Jazz...Our Original Art Form.” The Harold and Evelyn R. Davis Memorial Foundation sponsors the Satchmo Award created by Hal Davis, founder of the Jazz Club of Sarasota. The Satchmo commemorates the contributions of jazz great Louis Armstrong, nicknamed “SatchelMouth” or “Satchmo.” The award was designed by Frank Eliscu, a sculptor and art teacher who also designed the Heisman Memorial Football Trophy. Stay tuned for information on our 2025 recipient and presentation. The Jazz Club of Sarasota, founded in 1980, is dedicated to preserving, promoting, presenting and educating people about jazz, America’s original musical art form.
