Welcome I have had the privilege of performing at the Sarasota Jazz Festival for many years, and it is my great honor to be Musical Director. I am excited about the lineup we have curated for this year’s festival, and the opportunity to work with Ed Linehan.
This year’s lineup includes some of the brightest up and coming musicians and some of the great staples of this music. We hope the diverse programming will satisfy the palettes of many listeners. Our goal is to create a larger community of devoted jazz fans. As a Florida native, I have a special place in my heart for this festival and the arts as a whole in Florida. I look forward to the opportunity of getting to know each and every person who contributes to this festival in any way and the community of jazz fans. As Jimmy Heath said, “Without You, No Me”, your continued support is deeply appreciated. Enjoy!
Terell Stafford, acclaimed trumpet player based in New York, has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. Stafford is recognized as an incredibly gifted and versatile player, he combines a deep love of melody with his own brand of spirited and adventurous lyricism. Stafford’s exceptionally expressive and well defined musical talent allows him to dance in and around the rich trumpet tradition of his predecessors while making his own inroads. Stafford is the Director of Jazz Studies and Chair of Instrumental Studies at Temple University.

Celebrating Forty-Three Years A Brief History of the Jazz Club of Sarasota* The Jazz Club of Sarasota began as the brainstorm of Hal Davis, who retired to Sarasota in 1978 with his wife Evelyn. Hal was president of a Manhattan advertising agency and began his P.R. career in the publicity department of CBS. He handled top talent like the big bands of the era and managed Benny Goodman’s tours of Asia, Europe and the Soviet Union. When he came to Sarasota, he saw that there was an orchestra, opera and theatre…but something was missing – JAZZ! So, he and Evelyn invited people over to listen to music in their Pelican Cove apartment – and that’s how it started! Soon the jazz fans overflowed the Davis living room, their condo meeting room and eventually a bank community room. And The Jazz Club of Sarasota was born. The first three-day festival was presented in May of 1981 as the Sarasota Jazz Festival Hall of Fame Jazz Stars at Holley Hall. As The Jazz Club became an established organization, it opened an office in the Sarasota Opera House and became a founding member of the Sarasota County Arts Council. Hal Davis was the first president. The tenth Festival in 1990, a tribute to “The Amazing Dick Hyman,” presented five concerts under Hyman’s direction. Membership was now at 1,000. retired. Jerry was president for the next 10 years and expanded The Club’s programming and community profile. The festival expanded to five nights at the Van Wezel and the monthly Sunday night concerts became a staple featuring some of the biggest names in jazz. Membership reached 2,500 people. In 1997 jazz went to school with the creation of Jazzlinks: Jazz Connects to History, a 5th grade curriculum combining social studies and music through an initial grant from The Venice Foundation (now the Gulf Coast Community Foundation). This project has morphed into a program for 11th grade students in collaboration with Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe. Jerry Roucher retired as president in 2000 and Bobby Prince took over. Leadership passed to Jack Windt, Wes Bearden, Gordon Garrett, Bill Beckman, Dave Walrath, Peg Pluto and Ed Linehan, each making a unique contribution. The Jazz Club of Sarasota is one of the largest and most active jazz organizations in the United States. It continues to add new events and philanthropic activities that encourage the future of jazz… the original American musical art form. *Excerpted from an article written by Nancy Roucher
The 2023 Satchmo Award Paquito D’Rivera
The Jazz Club of Sarasota created its most prestigious honor, The Satchmo Award, in 1987 to honor those who have made a “Unique and Enduring Contribution to the Living History of Jazz...Our Original Art Form.” The Harold and Evelyn R. Davis Memorial Foundation sponsors The Satchmo Award, which was created by Hal Davis, founder of The Jazz Club of Sarasota.
The Satchmo commemorates the contributions of the jazz great Louis Armstrong, nicknamed "Satchel Mouth" or "Satchmo." The award was designed by Frank Eliscu, a sculptor and art teacher, the designer of the famous Heisman Memorial Trophy.
Paquito D’Rivera has won a combined 14 Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards (5 Grammy and 9 Latin Grammys). He is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and his achievements as a classical composer. Born in Havana, Cuba, he performed at age 10 with the National Theater Orchestra, studied at the Havana Conservatory of Music, and at 17, became a featured soloist with the Cuban National Symphony. As a founding member of the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, he directed that group for two years, while at the same time playing both the clarinet and saxophone with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. He eventually went on to premiere several works by notable Cuban composers with the same orchestra. Additionally, he was a founding member and co-director of the innovative musical ensemble Irakere. With its explosive mixture of jazz, rock, classical and traditional Cuban music never before heard, Irakere toured extensively throughout America and Europe, received several GRAMMY nominations (1979, 1980), and a GRAMMY (1979).

Christian Sands — Steinway Artist and five-time Grammy Nominee — is an emerging jazz force. His abundant piano technique perfectly matches his conception, accomplishing a much deeper musical goal: a fresh look at the entire language of jazz. Christian says, “My music is about teaching the way of jazz and keeping it alive.” Whether it’s stride, swing, bebop, progressive, fusion, Brazilian or Afro-Cuban, Sands develops the past while providing unusual and stimulating vehicles for the present… and for the future. He expresses himself through an extensive vocabulary of patterns, textures and structures, all the while maintaining a strong sense of understatement, sensitivity, taste and swing — hallmarks for as long as he has been playing. Lizz Wright Through an inimitable voice that The New York Times touts as, “a smooth, dark alto possessed of qualities you might associate with barrel-aged bourbon or butter-soft leather,” Wright sings with a soaring reflection of the cultural fabric of America. She lies beneath the script of human history transcending social divides with an offer of love and deep sense of humanity. Wright culls inspiration from her Southern upbringing in Georgia where she was the musical director of a small church in which her father was the pastor. Gospel music, and the call and response singing with the church congregation, informed her first brushes with music while soon she would traverse the Great American Songbook on her path to an illustrious singing career. At the age of 22, Wright made a name for herself nationally as a vocalist with a touring concert tribute to Billie Holiday, where her poised performance stole the show. At 23, she signed with Verve Records for the release of Salt, which topped Billboard’s contemporary jazz charts. Her subsequent albums continued to top the charts with her single “Lean In” (from Freedom & Surrender) landing on President Obama’s 2016 Summer Playlist. Produced by Americana icon Joe Henry, Wright’s latest full-length studio recording, GRACE (Concord Records; 2017), reveals the web of deep running roots of story and song that bind together the vastly diverse traditions that are the soul of the American South.
On June 15, 2022, Lizz Wright launched an independent record company, Blues & Greens Records, with the release of Holding Space, a brilliant live album capturing a Berlin, Germany concert in 2018.

Allen Carman Project with Gumbi Ortiz Allen Carman and Gumbi Ortiz had been friends and kindred musical spirits since the mid80s when the percussionist sat in with the bassist’s popular Tampa-area group City Heat. The concept for The Allen Carman Project began developing when the two musicians happened to do a gig together in 2015, their first mutual appearance in many years. After several decades on the road with Al Di Meola, Ortiz was looking to shift gears, and he mentioned that he was working with Philippe Saisse on an album. He suggested that Carman do a project with them. The bassist had never stopped playing, but he had been focused on his career as an attorney the previous twenty years. Carman jumped at the opportunity to rediscover his musical passion.

Marcus Miller Marcus Miller has been dubbed one of the most influential artists of our time. At the top of his game for over 30 years, he is a two-time Grammy award winner, (U.S.), winner of the 2013 Edison Award for Lifetime Achievement In Jazz (Holland), winner of the 2010 Victoire du Jazz (France) and in 2013, was appointed a UNESCO Artist For Peace. His characteristic bass sound can be heard on a limitless catalog of musical hits from Bill Wither’s “Just The Two Of Us” , to Luther Vandross’ “Never Too Much”, to songs from Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, Herbie Hancock, Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, George Benson, Elton John and Bryan Ferry to name a few. With his distinctive style - a unique combination of funk, groove, soul and pure technical skills - Miller has been referred to as one of the most significant bass players in jazz, R &B, fusion and soul. Bass Player Magazine includes him on its list of ten most influential jazz players of this generation. After several years of touring in Miles Davis’ band in the early 80’s, Miller developed a close professional and personal relationship with Davis which led to his collaboration on three critically acclaimed albums - the most famous being the ground-breaking album and title song Tutu, making Miller the last primary producer, arranger and composer for this great jazz legend.

Dick Hyman & Diego Figueiredo 2017 NEA Jazz Master 2001 Satchmo Award Dick Hyman is a piano virtuoso who—Zelig-like—has been known for playing in any style he wants. A masterful improviser, he is also a composer of concerti and chamber music, and the soundtrack composer/arranger for more than a dozen Woody Allen films (including, appropriately, Zelig). In addition, he launched the acclaimed Jazz in July series at the 92nd Street Y in New York City and served as its artistic director for 20 years.
