Jason Pruet: Researcher Advancing Mission Aligned AI

Jason Pruet from OpenAI is a physicist and technology leader with over 20 years of experience in science, national security, and public service. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, San Diego, where his research focused on astrophysics and nucleosynthesis. Under the guidance of George Fuller, a Nobel laureate and Willy Fowler's student, he explored the physics of gamma-ray bursts, particularly the role of weak nuclear processes in shaping these powerful cosmic events. His academic work laid the foundation for a career bridging research, leadership, and service to national security.

Research and Work at Lawrence Livermore

After completing his doctorate, Jason joined Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) as a postdoctoral researcher through a SciDAC Supernova grant. His strong scientific background quickly led him to become the group leader for computational nuclear physics. At LLNL, he worked on national security missions including stockpile stewardship, detection of clandestine nuclear materials, and nuclear forensic attribution. His leadership in computational research helped strengthen the laboratory’s role in supporting U.S. defense and technological advancement.

Federal Service and Leadership

In 2011, Jason Pruet transitioned into public service with the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). He managed key programs such as the Primary Assessment Campaign and the Physics and Engineering Models Campaign there. He also helped establish the Capabilities for Nuclear Intelligence program, connecting the national laboratories’ scientific expertise to critical intelligence missions. Later, as Chief of an intelligence branch within the DOE Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, he led teams responsible for evaluating foreign nuclear weapons programs. His dedication and leadership earned recognition from the Secretary of Energy and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Innovation at Los Alamos National Laboratory

After nearly a decade in Washington, Jason joined Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), overseeing the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program. This program ensured the reliability of the nuclear stockpile without underground testing. Collaborating with leaders such as Brian Spears, Kevin Dixon, and Rick Stevens, he helped develop national initiatives to advance artificial intelligence for Science, Energy, and Security. At LANL, he became the founding director of the National Security AI Office, focusing on the responsible integration of AI into national missions.

Current Role at

OpenAI

In 2025, he became a member of the Mission Alignment team. His work centers on ensuring AI technologies are developed responsibly and used for humanity's benefit. He collaborates with scientists, policymakers, and nonprofits to align AI research with ethical, security, and societal goals.

Continuing Commitment

Throughout his career, Jason Pruet has authored and co-authored numerous scientific papers on nucleosynthesis, nuclear detection, and high-performance computing. His professional journey reflects a lifelong commitment to advancing science responsibly, strengthening national security, and ensuring that innovation serves the greater good.
