My fascination is with art image as an outer reflection of inner life, with the image of woman as ‘Anima’ - the female counterpoint in a male psyche. All my work begins with life drawing and recently I have been drawing the figure’s reflection in a mirror placed on the floor. This view from the ground up embodies my lived experience of tension between gravity and levity.
I have always been most interested in what lies behind appearances. I try to remove my self more and more during the creative process to allow my unconscious a voice, to allow the materials to speak and to allow accidents to happen.
I have been obsessed with the way bitumen emerges from behind oil paint, with the way it appears to paint itself, revealing something unexpected and hidden. The marks seem reminiscent of rotting, death and decay, reflecting our own physical mortality as well as our worldly concerns where petroleum products and plastics are the bringers of pollution and climate change.
