Animals of the West have become Sharon Markwardt’s favorite subjects. It’s no wonder; with horses, dogs, and a donkey on her property, and surrounded by the neighbor’s longhorns, goats, and chickens, interaction with the animals is a part of the daily rhythm. She keeps a camera handy as she travels as well, to catch shots of other subjects. “I feel a connection to these creatures, and I love it when I can express their personalities and emotion, their soulfulness. So much comes through in the eyes. Painting them gives me great joy, and I think it shows. When collectors tell me my work makes them smile every day … what could be better?”
