Living the West Through Paint

Living the West Through Paint brings together two artists whose work is shaped not by imagined narratives of the West, but by lives deeply immersed in it. Though their subjects differ—Christensen’s contemplative landscapes and Redden’s intimately observed animals and working life—their paintings share a commitment to authenticity, discipline, and direct experience.

For Scott Christensen, painting is both a practice and a way of being present in the world. His landscapes emerge from prolonged observation and a process rooted in plein air study. Light, atmosphere, and rhythm guide his compositions, resulting in paintings that feel fluid and meditative—less about depicting a place than conveying the experience of moving through it. Influenced by art history, literature, and music, Christensen’s work balances tradition with restraint and quiet innovation.

Grant Redden paints from the ground up, informed by a lifetime spent in ranching country in southwest Wyoming. Horses, livestock, and the working West are not subjects he visits, but ones he knows intimately. His animals are individuals, rendered with weight, character, and presence. Avoiding formula, Redden approaches each painting as a fresh act of observation, honoring the labor, history, and relationships that define Western life.

Together, Christensen and Redden offer complementary perspectives on what it means to live in—and with—the West. One moves through light and landscape with quiet reflection; the other stands firmly in the physical realities of land, animals, and work. Living the West Through Paint is not about nostalgia or myth, but about attention, experience, and a way of life translated honestly onto canvas.
