AARON HAZEL Go West
indian market 2026 1
For generations, the story of the American West has been told through a narrow lens. In “Go West”, acclaimed painter Aaron Hazel invites viewers to look deeper, uncovering the individuals and communities whose contributions have shaped the West but whose stories have too often remained untold. Hazel’s work challenges conventional perceptions of Western art by placing underrepresented voices at the forefront. Through bold color, expressive brushwork, and striking portraiture, he celebrates the rich cultural diversity of the West—honoring Native peoples, Black pioneers, Hispanic ranching traditions, and the enduring spirit of contemporary Western communities. His paintings are not simply portraits; they are acts of recognition, preserving histories and identities that deserve a place within the broader Western narrative. As a person of color himself, Hazel approaches each subject with curiosity, respect, and a desire to learn. His work reflects an ongoing exploration of the individuals who have shaped the American frontier, while encouraging viewers to reconsider what Western art can be and whom it represents. By illuminating these often-overlooked stories, Hazel expands the visual language of the West and creates space for a more complete and inclusive understanding of its history. Presented during Santa Fe’s Indian Market, Beyond the Horizon offers a timely and powerful reflection on representation, identity, and the evolving story of the American West. Through Hazel’s distinctive vision, the past and present converge, revealing a West that is far more diverse, complex, and compelling than many have imagined. 2
