JEWELLERY NOTICES

Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular lot. These certificates may have been obtained by Woolley and Wallis or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Woolley and Wallis and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale, or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.

Not all images are lifesized, and weights and measurements in the catalogue are approximate only. It is common practice for coloured stones including jade to be treated to enhance their appearance. This includes jade that has been bleached (usually in acid), polymer/resin filled or dyed, or a combination of any of these treatments. Prospective buyers should presume that all coloured stones sold by Woolley and Wallis have been treated unless stated to the contrary in the catalogue description. Please contact the department for more information regarding enhancement and treatment of coloured stones, and for condition reports which are available on single item lots.

Pearls known and guaranteed to be cultured or natural are described as such in the cataloguing. Where the origin of a pearl is unknown and not guaranteed, it is described simply as a ‘pearl’, and it will be specified in the cataloguing as untested. Pearls described in this way are guaranteed to be pearls and not simulants, but their origin is not guaranteed as either natural or cultured. Items described as ‘seed pearls’ have also not been tested and cannot be guaranteed as natural pearls.

All diamonds included in this sale have been tested using a specialist device that detects labgrown diamonds.

Any dispute as to the authenticity of a lot, including signatures, age and condition, and as to the treatment of gemstones including pearls, synthetic diamonds and HPHT enhanced diamonds, must be brought to the attention of Woolley and Wallis within two weeks of the sale date. Woolley and Wallis do not guarantee the working order of mechanical movements at the point of sale and beyond. For full descriptions for lots 1194,

The daughter of William, Prince of Hohenzollern (19681927) and Princess Maria Theresa of BourbonTwo Sicilies (18671909), she married her first husband in 1913, Manuel Maria Filipe Carlos Amélio Luís Miguel Rafael Gabriel Gonzaga Francisco de Assis Eugénio de SaxeCoburgoGotha e Bragança (18891932), the last king of Portugal. Though Kirill was her first love, due to his Orthodox faith Victoria was instead pushed by her family, especially her grandmother Queen Victoria, to marry Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rine (18681937). The match was not a happy one, and in 1901 they divorced, to the scandal of European society. In 1915, Victoria and Kirill were finally married, though without the consent of either King Edward VII or Emperor Nicholas II, which resulted in Kirill being stripped of his offices and honours, and the couple being banished from Russia. It was not until 1910 that they were pardoned by the tsar and readmitted to Russia, where they remained until the Revolution in 1917. Later, following the death of both Nicholas II and Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich of Russia (18781918), Kirill would proclaim himself emperorinexile in 1926 as the last remaining head of the House of Romanov.

Van Cleef & Arpels first introduced this new style of jewellery with the release of the 'Flamme' brooch in 1934. This design, which has now achieved iconic status in Van Cleef & Arpels' oeuvre, pioneered the shift away from the angular and more abstract geometric forms of the earlier Art Deco period. Its scrolling design, similar to a flame, from which the French name 'Flamme', introduced the taste from more organic forms and gentler curvilinear shapes that heralded the taste for the softer style of midcentury jewellery. With the 1937 Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne, this new taste for curves and arabesques was firmly established, and the tone was set for the following two decades. Skilled craftmanship was at the heart of this new style, with the large design houses sourcing their pieces from the exceptional workshops active in Paris at the time, including that of Dumont et Campagnie. The present lot is firmly set within this tradition, and speaks of all the quality and exceptional design that characterises Van Cleef & Arpels jewellery.

In the event that such a lot is successfully bid for by an individual who is not authorised to possess it, that individual will be required to pay for it, but will not be allowed to take physical possession of it. The auctioneers will reoffer the lot on behalf of the buyer in a future auction; or may accept instructions to dispose of it by some other legal means, at their discretion.

VALUATIONS

Valuations are a core part of our business and are usually carried out by a senior specialist or directors. Accuracy, speed and above all confidentiality are paramount.

INSURANCE VALUATIONS

Written valuations for insurance can vary from a single item to a large estate. Before starting we discuss the various options available so that the valuation is specifically tailored to individual client’s needs.

For valuations of an entire house contents an itemised bound valuation is produced and can be accompanied by photographs when required. In addition to providing an inventory, written valuations can prevent painful arguments with a loss adjuster in the event of a claim.

Woolley & Wallis valuations are accepted by all leading insurance companies.

PROBATE VALUATIONS

We offer a speedy and professional service for executors and trustees and provide bound valuations for probate and duplicate copies when required. Since security is often a consideration, we can usually arrange for a house to be cleared and sent for auction, our Valuations Department ensures that executors are informed of which sales are involved and the results thereof.

We also carry out valuations for Family Division, Capital Gains Tax, and Private Treaty Sales.
