The Amos family of Little Gonerby, nearby Grantham in Lincolnshire, were among the region’s finest makers of early 19thcentury Windsor chairs. The family worked within the Grantham tradition but with a refined touch, their chairs are known for their slender turnings, elegant proportions and the characteristic use of yew with elm seats. The family’s output spans a period of stylistic change with early examples featuring naturally curved branch underarm supports, while later pieces adopt the finely turned supports that became fashionable in the 1820s. Surviving Amos chairs are valued today for their craftsmanship, lightness and distinctive Lincolnshire character.

Catalogue Note

The practice of decorating furniture with contrasting inlays was used as far back as Ancient Egypt. It continued to flourish during the Medieval period in Islamic cities such as Cairo and Damascus, where geometric patterns were created using tiny inlaid pieces of bone or ivory and various woods. The technique seems to have been adopted in both Spain and Italy, particularly Venice, from about 1450, and was used on boxes and chests like the present lot. References in Italian 16thcentury inventories to chests ‘alla veneziana’ (in the Venetian style) may refer to this style of decoration.

For similarly decorated chests and cassoni, see Sotheby's, 27th October 2021, Arts of the Islamic World, lot 201, the V & A Museum, accession no. 72241860 and the National Trust, Polesden Lacey, ref. no. NT1245974.

Downhill was a magnificent mansion built by Frederick Augustus Hervey Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry in the late 18th century. Neal's 'Views of Seats' 1823 vol. 6 describes the west drawing room at Downhill as containing 'several vases, a beautiful China vase and a model of the Warwick vase' and 'A fine collection of marbles contribute to the very splendid appearance of this apartment' and 'these marbles included a copy of the Warwick vaselarge'.

The Warwick Vase, a colossal marble vase measuring nearly six feet high from the 2nd century AD, became one of the most celebrated pieces of antiquity. The vase was excavated in 1770 from a lake at Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli and acquired by Sir William Hamilton, antiquarian and Ambassador to Naples. It was later sold to the Earl of Warwick who installed it on the grounds of Warwick Castle.

This marble of Dirce, also know as Bacchante at Rest, derives from one of Lorenzo Bartolini’s most celebrated compositions, created during the 1820/30s for the 6th Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth House. The work is part of a series of smallerscale marbles produced after the success of Bartolini’s original . Combining refined classicism with naturalistic character, the figure depicts a reclining bacchante in a serene repose, the original is rendered with the soft polish and detailed anatomical modelling typical of Bartolini’s Carrara marbles. Bartolini trained in Florence before moving to Paris and working under the patronage of Napoleon’s circle until the fall of Napoleon. Upon returning to Florence Bartolini established a successful independent studio, taking on international commissions from the British aristocracy

Gloria Victis, crafted in the aftermath of the FrancoPrussian War, reflects Antonin Mercié’s shift in intention from a victorious soldier being lifted by Fame to a fallen hero borne upward by Victorya poignant alteration made in line with France’s defeat. This composition soon became a national emblem, with replicas evident in numerous war memorials across France, including at DeuxSèvres, Niort, Agen, and Bordeaux.

Mercié sits among the most distinguished French sculptors of his time, his talents recognised with a string of honours and awards throughout his life. He received the Prix de Rome in 1868 including the Légion d'honneur at the 1874 Salon for Gloria Victis, and the Grand Prix at the 1878 Exposition Universelle. He was appointed as professor at the École des BeauxArts in 1900 and subsequently elected as President of the Société des Artistes Français in 1913. To this day, Gloria Victis remains one of Mercié’s most enduring and eloquent expressions of heroism and national resilience.

Catalogue Note

Walter Potter, the Victorian taxidermist, is known for his whimsical dioramas featuring small animals such as kittens, rabbits, squirrels, and birds enacting uncannily human scenes, from table games to afternoon tea. Potter began creating his playful taxidermies aged 15, eventually gaining such attention that he opened the Walter Potter Taxidermy Museum in 1880 in Bramber, Sussex, which enabled him to capitalize upon the Victorians’ enthusiasm for the macabre. Potter combined skilled mounting with miniature props and highly detailed costumes, arranged in a theatrical manner to create scenes inspired by literature and by social and domestic rituals.

Over time these curiosities fell out of fashion, and the collection was auctioned and dispersed in 2003, with many tableaux now belonging to private collectors worldwidecherished for their unconventional charm. His work reflects Victorian sentimentality, curiosity culture, and a fascination with anthropomorphism, leaving behind a legacy that is arguably iconic yet unsettling in equal measure.

See Bonhams, The Sale of the Contents of Mr Potter's Museum of Curiosities, 23rd September 2003 for related examples including: lot 293 the 'The Kittens Wedding', which sold for £21,150 (including premium).

VALUATIONS

Valuations are a core part of our business and are usually carried out by a senior specialist or directors. Accuracy, speed and above all confidentiality are paramount.

INSURANCE VALUATIONS

Written valuations for insurance can vary from a single item to a large estate. Before starting we discuss the various options available so that the valuation is specifically tailored to individual client’s needs.

For valuations of an entire house contents an itemised bound valuation is produced and can be accompanied by photographs when required. In addition to providing an inventory, written valuations can prevent painful arguments with a loss adjuster in the event of a claim.

Woolley & Wallis valuations are accepted by all leading insurance companies.

PROBATE VALUATIONS

We offer a speedy and professional service for executors and trustees and provide bound valuations for probate and duplicate copies when required. Since security is often a consideration, we can usually arrange for a house to be cleared and sent for auction, our Valuations Department ensures that executors are informed of which sales are involved and the results thereof.

We also carry out valuations for Family Division, Capital Gains Tax, and Private Treaty Sales.
