SPOTLIGHT: on coloured stones Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but jewellery set with precious coloured gemstones such as sapphires, rubies, spinels, peridots and tourmalines are gaining in prominence within today’s market. Jewellery valuer Helena Waudby FGA DGA notes that ‘Buyers are gaining in confidence and being more adventurous, they are looking beyond traditional colourless diamonds and wanting to acquire beautiful coloured stones to add variety to their collections’. There is nothing more extraordinary than the magic and fascination of a coloured gemstone, and naturally, as demand increases, so does price… watch this space.

ITS ALL IN THE PEDIGREE This splendid silver claret jug was discovered by Auctioneer Ashley Jones during a home visit in Cheshire. Inherited by the owner, the claret jug was instantly recognisable as something very special. Under ‘normal’ circumstances, you would expect a claret jug to have a glass body, however, this solid silver bodied example was endearingly modelled as a circus dog. Claret jugs are highly sought after and not only did this example appeal to claret jug connoisseurs, but also to silver animal and novelty silver collectors.

ONE TO WATCH ‘People often ask me what they should be investing in, and my usual advice is that you can’t possibly go wrong if you buy something you like and would enjoy owning. It is difficult to predict what will be sought after in years to come, however the auction room has yielded some fascinating results in recent years and none more noticeable than the boom in the watches market, particularly wristwatches. We have noticed that luxury brands; Rolex, Patek Phillippe, Omega, Cartier and IWC, to name a few, have performed increasingly strongly and those models that are the closest to the initial model at the time of production. Coupled with being a clean example in good condition means that these are likely to increase in value over time. However, my initial advice still stands, buy it because you want it, look after it and if it increases in value over time, then great! If it doesn’t, you have derived pleasure from owning a miniature masterpiece and being its custodian over the years’. Issue Two • Auction Review

CHURCHILL’S CIGAR

One of our most unusual finds to hit the headlines came in the form of a half smoked cigar that was left by Sir Winston Churchill on his voyage aboard HMS Duke of York in 1941 to meet President Roosevelt. Christina Trevanion explains ‘The cigar comes from a pivotal point in our history and is something we all associate with ‘British Bulldog’ Churchill’, collected by the ships chaplain and with impeccable provenance, the cigar caught the eye of keen Churchill enthusiast, who secured the cigar for £2,600. ‘The buyer was delighted with his purchase and messaged us to express his joy at acquiring such a historically important artefact for his collection’ explained Christina.

TIME FOR TENNIS? GAME SET AND MATCH This highly sought after Sphairistike Lawn Tennis set, was found languishing in a summer pavilion in the grounds of a Cheshire country house and created a stir in the saleroom when the collection sold for a phenomenal £21,000 to a UK based private collector who battled hard to secure his purchase against a determined American online bidder. Despite only being a part set and in very poor condition, the exciting find still drew international interest from the tennis community. “The Sphairistike set was exceptional’ said Managing Partner Christina Trevanion ‘correctly and diligently identified by my team, we spoke to a great number of impassioned collectors who stressed how rarely an original Sphairistike set comes up for auction and just how much of an impact that this game had on tennis as we know it. Moreover its creator, Major Walton Clopton Wingfield, hailed not too far from us in Wrexham, so in many ways it was as if the set was coming home!” Prior to the Sphairstike’s invention, tennis was played on specialized indoor courts which were expensive and troublesome to erect, by the mid 19th-century the games popularity was in decline. Wingfield, envisioned a version of a tennis court which could be easily erected on outdoor croquet lawns. After experimenting with the idea, Wingfield secured a patent in 1874 for what he described as the ‘New and Improved Court for Playing the Ancient Game of Tennis’ which he coined ‘Sphairistiké’ a Greek term which roughly translates to ‘ball-game.’ Sphairistiké was a hit with the upper classes, many of whom replaced their croquet lawns with more permanent ‘lawn tennis’ courts. In 1877, the All England Croquet Club in Wimbledon decided to stage competitive Lawn Tennis games for the very first time, and thus began The Wimbledon Championships we know now. Major Wingfield achieved his ambition of restoring the noble game of tennis to its former glory, transforming a once strictly indoor game into the outdoor version we are so familiar with today.

Lights, Camera, Action! Although her filming schedule was disrupted substantially throughout 2020/2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ‘The show must go on’ was very much the cry we heard from Christina. ‘I was very honoured to be able to continue filming, albeit in a very reduced and COVID secure manner in 2020. It was important for me to keep providing new content for viewers, and I was grateful to receive many lovely messages from viewers who found that watching my programmes was a ‘ray of light’ in all the bad news that we were hearing’. ‘It is easy to forget, in our busy lives, that for some people, to see a familiar face on television is not only reassuring but may be the highlight of their day whilst they struggle in isolation. We managed to create some ‘special’ episodes of Bargain Hunt and continue filming Antiques Road Trip in separate vehicles. I am very much looking forward to returning to some form of normality in my television work in 2021’ hear hear to that!
