Whether or not we realise it, our emotions are governed by our environment. The attuned, sentient soul will be deeply affected by the colours, forms and textures that surround us, yet which mostly go unnoticed.
The provocation behind my paintings is deeply rooted within a lifelong fascination of surface detail in daily life; nuanced colours and textures altered by natural decay, erosion and oxidisation, creating the constantly evolving patina.
It is often the subsequent accretions of either human intervention or atmospherics that enhance our visual joy of surfaces. The deeper we look, the more fantastical they become. With an open mind and an unprejudiced eye, our surroundings reveal the richness of their secrets to us. I believe it is time to liberate our imagination, to connect with our emotions. It is time to see with our hearts too, not just our eyes. In order to have emotions, we require a stimulus. When we see a graphic, we respond. thus, emotion and graphic are inextricably intertwined :
