CONNECTION: THEATER

THE BIG IDEA

The hostel aims to be a place of connection — a space between boroughs, the old and the new, and nature and the built environment.

This will be accomplished by integrating new materials into the existing building, creating smooth transitions between inside and outside, and having a theater as a secondary program to act as a third space that urges people to come together.

BUBBLE DIAGRAM

PROGRAMMING + BUBBLE DIAGRAM

The program requires a minimum of 30 rooms with a total of 102 beds for accomodation, guest amenities, and support areas . Each program is categorized based on privacy. The adjacency is based on privacy and fostering connections through community

STACK

4 volumes are stacked and staggered, narrowing as it goes up. Smaller individual modules are also added to the site

SUBTRACT

Volumes are subtracted from the stacked and original modules, creating pathways for circulation

The massing extends beneath the ground, further connecting the site to the building EXCAVATE

A sloped, glazed roof is added to protect from the elements while still showing the relationship between exterior and interior COVER

THIRD FLOOR PLAN

Even with the distinct placement of programs based on privacy, an open plan puts a halt to circulation constraints, prioritizing ease of access to different parts of the hostel

MATERIALS

CLAY FLOORS AND WALLS - an attempt at adapting to the site using humble materials

MATTE POLYCARBONATE - promotes transparency and connection outside and within the hostel

ORIGINAL BRICK FACADE - showcases the remnants and history of the site and building

RED METAL ACCENTS - represents the new life and energy brought to the site and building

The lobby welcomes all visitors of the island with a public lounge and cafe. A separate room for reception resides within the space for direct access to the guest rooms

LOBBY

SECONDARY PROGRAM: OUTDOOR THEATER

The Hostel Liminal Theater highlights the goal of providing a third space for guests and visitors to foster a sense of connection. With multiple entry points within the site and the hostel, it serves as an invitation for spontaneity and interactivity within Roosevelt Island, showcasing the potential and its ability to build a community

REFLECTED CEILING PLAN

As a way to visually represent the adaptation of the new to the old, concrete ramps with seating and lush vegetation spiral down from the hostel, extending beyond the original brick facade, onto the ground emphasizing its connection to the site
