Prepare your home: Secure heavy furniture to walls and place heavy objects on lower shelves.
Create a plan: Develop a family communication and meeting plan. Designate an out-of-state contact for family members to check in with.
Assemble a kit: Stock emergency supplies like water, food, a first-aid kit, and a battery-operated radio.
Know safe spots: Identify safe places in your home, such as under a sturdy desk or table.
Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Drop to your hands and knees, get under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.
Stay indoors: If you are inside, stay inside. Do not run outside or use elevators

Stay in bed: If you are in bed, stay there and cover your head and neck with a pillow.
Move to an open area: If you are outdoors, move to an open space away from buildings, power lines, and trees.
Stay in your car: If you are driving, pull over to a clear area and stay in your vehicle until the shaking stops. Avoid overpasses and utility wires.
NB - If trapped: Do not light a match. Cover your mouth, tap on a pipe or wall, or use a whistle to signal for help.


Check for damage: Look for gas leaks, fire, and damage to your house. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, shut off the main valve if you know how, and evacuate the area.
Be prepared for aftershocks: Be prepared for more earthquakes (aftershocks).
Stay informed: Turn on a transistor radio to get emergency news and instructions.
Stay away from hazards: Stay away from damaged buildings, landslide-prone areas, and broken power lines.

Earthquake Awareness Week for 2026 in Jamaica is likely to be held in January, following the traditional schedule of the second week of January. While the specific dates have not yet been officially announced, the Jamaica Information Service has previously observed the week from January 8–13 or January 12–18, and it is part of the broader "Earthquake Awareness Month" held in January, according to Kirk-FP Limited and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).
